The Composition Of Anonymity: Toward A Theory, History, And Pedagogy, Timothy Thomas Dansdill
The Composition Of Anonymity: Toward A Theory, History, And Pedagogy, Timothy Thomas Dansdill
Doctoral Dissertations
In keeping with its recognized function of non-identity through the suppression of proper name recognition, anonymity is not recognized as "essential" to nominalist consciousness or to intersubjective action through language. The founding philosophical discourses of identity, authority, and community reveal an "anonymous function"---a transgressive discourse of impersonation, authenticity, and immunity---which this dissertation traces in phenomenology, discourse theory, poetics, rhetoric, and composition.
The first two chapters draw from phenomenology (Schutz and Natanson), and discourse theory (Foucault), to propose a theory of anonymity as integral to any understanding of personal identity across the entire performative range of self/other orientations. Chapter three draws …
Ecological Impacts Of Shrimp Trawling On Juveniles Of Selected Benthic Fish Species In The Southwestern Gulf Of Maine, Augustine Japieni Mungkaje
Ecological Impacts Of Shrimp Trawling On Juveniles Of Selected Benthic Fish Species In The Southwestern Gulf Of Maine, Augustine Japieni Mungkaje
Doctoral Dissertations
The ecological impacts of shrimp trawling on juveniles of selected benthic fish were studied in the southwestern Gulf of Maine. The fish community and selected environmental variables were sampled at two sites in summer and winter during 1998 and 1999. The community was composed of 24 species in 12 families. Site 1 was dominated by longhorn sculpin, Myoxocephalus octodecemspinosus , while American plaice, Hippoglossoides platessoides, was the dominant species in Site 2. Red hake, Urophycis chuss was abundant at both sites. There were also seasonal differences in the flux of fish at the two sites.
Correlation analysis showed the abundance …
The Physiological Role And Characterization Of Melanin Produced By Shewanella Algae Bry, Charles Edwin Turick
The Physiological Role And Characterization Of Melanin Produced By Shewanella Algae Bry, Charles Edwin Turick
Doctoral Dissertations
Shewanella algae BrY is a Gram negative, facultative anaerobe isolated from the Great Bay Estuary of New Hampshire. This member of the gamma Proteobacteria demonstrates extensive versatility in the variety of terminal electron acceptors it uses for anaerobic respiration. Since the natural habitat of this non-fermenting organism is the oxiclanoxic interface of sediments, the ability to utilize various terminal electron acceptors contributes to its survival and growth. Among the terminal electron acceptors used by S. algae BrY are insoluble iron minerals. The transfer of electrons from a bacterial cell to an insoluble compound presents a strategic challenge for this organism. …
Grief (W)Rites: Composing Loss In The Composition Classroom, Mary Elizabeth Hallet
Grief (W)Rites: Composing Loss In The Composition Classroom, Mary Elizabeth Hallet
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation studies first-year college student essays about grief, loss and death. It begins with the author's own narrative of grief and moves on to explore the complications of revealing grief in an academic context, discussing the personal and political implications of doing so. The dissertation argues that narratives of grief in composition classrooms are often part of a larger dialogue among both students and teachers, and that often these narratives are written as kinds of responses to one another. It explores the relationship between these kinds of dialogues and elegies written by nineteenth century women, which invite reciprocation and …
Relational Learning For A Sustainable Future: An Eco -Spiritual Model, Mary Elizabeth Westfall
Relational Learning For A Sustainable Future: An Eco -Spiritual Model, Mary Elizabeth Westfall
Doctoral Dissertations
We are facing unprecedented environmental challenges as we enter the new millennium as human choices and practices have repeatedly led to environmental degradation. Increasingly there are individuals and groups seeking to address this environmental crisis and move toward more sustainable patterns of living. But in order to make alternative choices it will be essential to draw upon the wealth and variety of human capabilities.
For nearly 350 years Western culture has looked to reason and rationality to provide truth and direction. The affective side of being human, feelings, intuition, love, care, wonder, mystery and hope have largely been devalued. In …
Taking A Pedagogical Turn: What Happens When The Student /Teacher Conference Moves To The Center Of The Basic Writing Course, Gregory John Bowe
Taking A Pedagogical Turn: What Happens When The Student /Teacher Conference Moves To The Center Of The Basic Writing Course, Gregory John Bowe
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines the redesign of a basic writing course at a large, urban, majority-minority public university in Miami, Florida. In the redesigned course, there are no regular class meetings at all. Instead, small groups of five students meet with a teacher in "writing circles," where they workshop papers. The content of the course is provided by a third-party software program in a dedicated computer lab. The redesign project is examined in light of the particular institutional history of Florida International University, with special emphasis on the roles of space, time, and face-to-face interaction in the teaching of writing to …
Detection Of Giardia Lamblia And Cryptosporidium Parvum In The Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Harvested From The Great Bay Estuary, Kim Marie Stowell
Detection Of Giardia Lamblia And Cryptosporidium Parvum In The Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Harvested From The Great Bay Estuary, Kim Marie Stowell
Doctoral Dissertations
The Great Bay Estuarine system is being impacted by point source and nonpoint source pollution that affect shellfish quality. Many outbreaks of human gastroenteritis are potentially caused by the consumption of raw or undercooked oysters in which the protozoan pathogens, Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium parvum are present. The development of a rapid and sensitive technique to detect infectious protozoa in oysters is a necessity.
Immunofluorescence has been employed as a technique for the detection of these organisms in drinking water. Cross reactivity with algae and the production of false positive results limits the usefulness of this technique in environmental studies. …
The Effect Of Freeze /Thaw Temperature Fluctuations On Microbial Metabolism Of Petroleum Hydrocarbon Contaminated Antarctic Soil, Conrad George Leszkiewicz
The Effect Of Freeze /Thaw Temperature Fluctuations On Microbial Metabolism Of Petroleum Hydrocarbon Contaminated Antarctic Soil, Conrad George Leszkiewicz
Doctoral Dissertations
Petroleum contaminated soil exists at McMurdo Station in Antarctica. These soils were contaminated with historic releases of JP-8 jet fuel. Over time, there does not appear to have been significant reduction in the petroleum concentrations in these soils. This lack of reduction has been attributed to the extremely cold Antarctic environment and the lack of available moisture.
Cold temperatures and/or lack of moisture may not be the factors inhibiting biodegradation. Soil temperatures can exceed 20 degrees centigrade (°C) during the austral summer and melt water becomes available. However, the soil temperatures have also been reported to fluctuate rapidly. Swings of …
The Relationship Between Fruit Color Traits And Anthocyanin Genes In Diploid Fragaria, Chaoyang Deng
The Relationship Between Fruit Color Traits And Anthocyanin Genes In Diploid Fragaria, Chaoyang Deng
Doctoral Dissertations
A candidate gene approach was used to determine the likely molecular identity of the c locus (yellow fruit color) in Fragaria vesca, a diploid (2n = 2x = 14) strawberry. Using PCR with degenerate primer pairs, intron-containing segments of structural genes coding for the enzymes: chalcone synthase (CHS), chalcone isomerase (CHI), flavanone 3-hydroxylase (F3H), dihydroflavonol 4-reductase (DFR), anthocyanindin synthase (ANS), and one Del-like regulatory gene (RAN) in the anthocyanin biosynthetic pathway were amplified, cloned and sequenced. Intron length polymorphisms for each of these genes were detected among three diploid varieties: F. vesca Alpine variety 'Yellow Wonder' (YW) (Europe); DNIC, an …
E -Commerce For The Metal Removal Industry, Okhyun Ryou
E -Commerce For The Metal Removal Industry, Okhyun Ryou
Doctoral Dissertations
The popularity of outsourcing fabrication introduces a problem, namely an inevitable loss of data as information is translated from design to fabrication or from one system to another. Unsatisfactory information, delivered to the outsourcing facility, and inefficient communications between design and fabrication certainly cause enormous economic losses from late product delivery or bad product quality. To overcome these data transferring problems and to improve communications between the design and fabrication sides, a design and manufacturing methodology for custom machined parts in E-Commerce is suggested and implemented in this dissertation. This methodology is based on the idea of a "Clean Interface" …

"In Passion And In Hope:" The Pilgrimage Of An American Radical, Martha Dodd Stern And Family, 1933--1990, John Francis Fox Jr.
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation explores the literary/political pilgrimage of Martha Dodd Stern (1908--1990), an unusually promising writer. Using Martha's writings, government intelligence files like the Venona Transcripts, I develop a narrative and analytic family biography to analyze the faith of this leftist and develop a typology of the fellow traveler that shows its roots in the Progressive Era and their radicalization under the Great Depression and growth of fascism.
Martha's father, historian William E. Dodd (1869 to 1940), imparted to Martha his Wilsonian progressivism and resentment of social distinctions. Martha's experience in Nazi Germany (1933 to 1937) radicalized these roots. She placed …

The Relation Of Acculturation, Criminal History, And Social Integration Of Mexican American And Non -Mexican Students To Assaults On Intimate Partners, Ignacio Luis Ramirez
Doctoral Dissertations
Studies that have compared intimate partner violence among Mexican Americans and Non-Mexican Whites have found conflicting results. The results can be grouped into three categories, those that found Mexican Americans have higher assault rates, those that found Mexican Americans have lower assault rates, and those that found no differences between both ethnic groups. This study analyzed a sample of 348 college students to examine the role that Mexican ethnicity and acculturation into Anglo American society by Mexican Americans plays in predicting intimate partner violence. Additionally, the role of criminal history and integration into society were analyzed to understand their unique …
Estimating The Environmental Costs Of The Hydro Fuel Cycle Using Life Cycle Assessment Techniques And Economic Valuation, Benjamin Harwood Ellis
Estimating The Environmental Costs Of The Hydro Fuel Cycle Using Life Cycle Assessment Techniques And Economic Valuation, Benjamin Harwood Ellis
Doctoral Dissertations
A Life Cycle Assessment model, with an integrated impact assessment, is used to estimate average external economic damages from the hydro fuel cycle. Aggregated average damage assessments of the hydro fuel cycle are complementary to marginal and site specific assessments, and are useful for general energy policy planning. For the upstream inventory assessment, detailed material input data from the Morrow Point Dam is used to estimate material inputs at 174 New England, and 4 Quebec, concrete hydroelectric projects. LCNetBase input-output life cycle assessment software, developed by Dr. Gregory Norris at Sylvatica, is used to estimate upstream emissions associated with material …
Regulation Of Mammalian Photoreceptor Phosphodiesterase (Pde) By Its Noncatalytic Gaf Domains And Its Two Small Subunits, Gamma And Delta, Hongmei Mou
Doctoral Dissertations
cGMP phosphodiesterase (PDE) is the central effector of visual transduction in retinal rod photoreceptors. The overall goal of this work was to investigate the possible regulatory mechanisms of PDE in mammalian rod photoreceptors by its noncatalytic cGMP binding sites on the PDE catalytic dimer (Palphabeta), and by the interactions between the inhibitory Pgamma subunit and Palphabeta in their phosphorylated and non-phosphorylated states.
First, the binding of cGMP to the noncatalytic sites on membrane-associated PDE (PDE-M) and soluble PDE (PDE-S) was characterized. We found that PDE-M holoenzyme contains 2 non-identical high-affinity cGMP binding sites; one of the cGMP binding sites is …
The Business Of Running A Law School, John H. Garvey
The Business Of Running A Law School, John H. Garvey
Scholarly Articles
I confess that as a faculty member I gave little thought to the business of running a law school. Deans do not have that luxury. Someone has to pay attention to things like the budget, payroll, physical plant, purchasing, admissions, career services, and (most important of all) the kind and quality of service that we provide to students in the classroom. Stated abstractly, we are a nonprofit business that provides a service to about 800 customers each year, and we, like all businesses, have to balance our books. From a business point of view the most interesting challenge we face …

As Justice And Prudence Dictate: The Morality Of America’S War Against Terrorism—A Response To James V. Schall, S.J.,, William J. Wagner
Scholarly Articles
This response to Father Schall's article explores just how three principles, which he proposes in general terms as central to integrity in moral reasoning and decision over the use of military force, serve, in fact, to organize an assessment of the rights and wrongs of actions by states and individuals within a conflict like the one coming to a crisis on September 11th. In the course of its analysis, the article means to show that prudence has a role, not only once the requirements of justice are satisfied, as a too casual reading of Father Schall's article might perhaps imply, …

The allocation and rationing of health care resources is, no doubt, one of the most pressing issues confronting contemporary society. These issues considered from a micro and a macro level of economic analysis are linked inextricably to utilitarianism which, in turn, relies upon a cost-benefit analysis which balances reasonable individual needs against the availability of medical resources within the larger community. From an ethical viewpoint, the cost-benefit approach to the distribution of health care resources is impractical because it seeks to reduce (or convert) all health benefits to dollar amounts, thereby seeking very awkwardly to convert quality of life benefits …

Effects Of Vestibular Rehabilitation Using The Dizziness Handicap Inventory, Jayme M. Bays
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
When individuals have an insult to the vestibular system they often experience symptoms including vertigo, decreased static and dynamic balance, and a decreased ability to participate in activities of daily living. The Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) is a "dizzy-specific" questionnaire that was developed in 1990 to measure how dizziness and imbalance affect an individual's quality of life. It is an assessment tool, made up of physical, emotional, and functional sub-scales, that has reliability and is easy to administer and score. The purpose of this study was to measure the effectiveness of a vestibular rehabilitation program, using the Dizziness Handicap Inventory, …
Survey Of North Dakota Physical Therapists: Participation And Perceptions Of The American Physical Therapy Association (Apta) And The North Dakota Physical Therapy Association (Ndpta), Scott Cirks
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) is the professional association for physical therapists. The North Dakota Physical Therapy Association (NDPTA) is its section that serves the state of North Dakota. With tougher times falling upon the profession in recent years, therapist membership levels have dropped at an alarming rate. An attempt was made through this study to determine the role the APT A and NDPTA plays in member's and nonmember's lives and the role they would like it to play.
Surveys were sent to all of the 339 registered physical therapists in North Dakota. Each was asked to complete the …
