"We Are Going To Chattanooga": The Diary Entries Of Private Van Buren Oldham, April 14, 1863 To September 21, 1863, Dieter C. Ullrich

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

From April 14th to September 21st, 1863 Private Van Buren Oldham of Company G, 9th Tennessee Volunteers, served as a Confederate infantryman in the Army of Tennessee. During those five months he was one of many soldiers that helped build the defenses about Chattanooga, marched with Gen. Braxton Bragg to confront the Federal Army in southeast Tennessee and fought the bloody Battle of Chickamauga. Private Oldham arrived in Chattanooga as a parolee from a Union prison camp and would leave as a wounded combatant attempting to recapture the city.

Part 2: Major League Sports Teams: A Pipe Dream?, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University Jan 2001

Part 2: Major League Sports Teams: A Pipe Dream?, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

There is remarkably little economic evidence in favor of major league sports franchises, even in cities such as Baltimore. Cities and regions that subsidize major league sports teams nearly always find it a losing proposition. If a region, such as Hampton Roads, attempts to attract a major league sports team, then it should do so for reasons of pride and identification rather than economics.

Part 3: The Decline Of Coal And The Rise Of Deep-Draft Ships: The Future Of The Port, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University Jan 2001

Part 3: The Decline Of Coal And The Rise Of Deep-Draft Ships: The Future Of The Port, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

Since the early 1990s, the Port has stagnated in terms of the volume of the cargo it handles. This is due almost solely to a decline in bulk cargo (mostly coal). Nonetheless, the Port continues to provide major a economic impetus to the region because it has become much more efficient and competitive over the past decade.

Part 6: Regionalism And The Dillon Rule: An Interpretive Essay, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University Jan 2001

Part 6: Regionalism And The Dillon Rule: An Interpretive Essay, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

While the Dillon Rule does not explicitly appear in many Virginia statutes, it is the accepted legal and legislative standard in Virginia. In essence, it says no city, town, county or region may exercise any power not explicitly granted it by the General Assembly. We argue that the Dillon Rule, while not without points in its favor, has outlived its usefulness.

Part 4: Seeing Things Through Different Lenses: The Opinions Of Blacks And Whites, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University Jan 2001

Part 4: Seeing Things Through Different Lenses: The Opinions Of Blacks And Whites, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

This year’s Report surveyed more than 1,100 Hampton Roads residents, about half of whom were African American. African Americans see several issues differently than other citizens do. Notably, they have a different perspective on the role and effectiveness of the policy of affirmative action. African Americans also are much more likely to vote Democratic and attend church than the region’s other citizens. This is the first significant public-opinion poll ever taken of African Americans in Hampton Roads.

Nf01-486 Creating A Strong Family: Why Are Families So Important?, John Defrain Jan 2001

Nf01-486 Creating A Strong Family: Why Are Families So Important?, John Defrain

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Marriage and family are perhaps society's oldest and most resilient institutions. From the beginning of human life, people have grouped themselves into families to find emotional, physical and communal support. Although in recent years social commentators have predicted the demise of both marriage and the family, they not only survive but continue to change and evolve. Family structures may vary around the world, and yet, the value of family endures.

Creating An Undergraduate Culture Of Science By Integrating Inquiry, Project-Based Learning, And Research Into The Curriculum, Richard A. Niesenbaum

Innovations in Undergraduate Research and Honors Education: Proceedings of the Second Schreyer National Conference 2001

Full engagement in science includes observation and asking questions, the development of a hypothesis, designing and conducting an appropriate experiment to test that hypothesis, data acquisition, appropriate analysis, revisiting initial questions, and dissemination of results. Here, I report on efforts to engage undergraduate students in all of these elements of science by integrating inquiry, investigation, and research in four intermediate biology courses for all majors. The project-based courses include Plant Ecology, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Molecular Genetics, and Physiological Ecology. Students conduct semester-long, experimental research projects and present their results at a public poster session on campus. Using computers, peripherals, and …

Qualifying Immunity: Protecting State Employees' Right To Protect Their Employment Rights After Alden V. Maine, Raymond J. Farrow Jan 2001

Qualifying Immunity: Protecting State Employees' Right To Protect Their Employment Rights After Alden V. Maine, Raymond J. Farrow

Washington Law Review

Recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions have barred state employees from bringing private suits against their state employers to recover back wages due them as a result of having been paid in violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). This Comment proposes that the only method by which state employees may protect their FLSA rights on their own behalf is to bring suits against responsible state supervisory personnel in their individual capacities. Although such actions are not barred by sovereign immunity, the potential ability of state agents to invoke a defense of "qualified immunity" would severely impair state employees' ability …

The Relationship Between Receptive Vocabulary And Letter Recognition, James Bennett

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The West Virginia Educare Program has randomly chosen 150 children from 2 ½ to 5 years of age to participate in an academic readiness study. These children came from a 6 county pilot community program collaborative, including the counties of Cabell, Wayne, Monongalia, Roane, Upshur, Webster, and Summers. The Bracken-R, the PPVT-III, and Carolina Curriculum for Pre-Schoolers with special needs were used to assess all subjects. For this study, the letter recognition subset of the Bracken-R and the raw score of the PPVT-III were used to determine if a correlation exists between receptive vocabulary and letter recognition. This study found …

The Concentration Of Three Anti-Seizure Medications In Hair: The Effects Of Hair Color, Controlling For Dose And Age, Tom Mieczkowski, Aristidis M. Tsatsakis, Michael Kruger, Thanasis Psillakis

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Background

This paper assess the relationship between the quantity of three anti-seizure medications in hair and the color of the analyzed hair, while controlling for the effects of dose, dose duration, and patient age for 140 clinical patients undergoing anti-seizure therapy. Three drugs are assessed: carbamazepine (40 patients), valproic acid (40 patients), and phenytoin (60 patients). The relationship between hair assay results, hair color, dose, dose duration, and age is modeled using an analysis of covariance. The covariance model posits the hair assay results as the dependent variable, the hair color as the qualitative categorical independent variable, and dose, …

Postural Balance And Acceleration Threshold Detection For Anterior Horizontal Translation In Diabetic And Non-Diabetic Elderly, Venkatesh Balasubramanian Jan 2001

Postural Balance And Acceleration Threshold Detection For Anterior Horizontal Translation In Diabetic And Non-Diabetic Elderly, Venkatesh Balasubramanian

Doctoral Dissertations

Slips and falls, and even the fear of failing, can represent a major medical and functional deterrent to living independently, especially among the elderly population. Various groups of elders are at known risk for falling including, but not limited to, those with vestibular dysfunction, those with low visual acuity including visual neuropathies, and those with peripheral neuropathies. The first two groups are fairly well studied, but the relationship between the level of peripheral neuropathy and extent of falling has received relatively less attention.

In this study, using sliding linear investigative platform for analyzing lower limb stability (SLIP-FALLS), the psychophysical thresholds …
