Developing Better Economic Information About Coastal Resources As A Tool For Integrated Coastal Management, Judith T. Kildow Dr, Brian Baird, Charles S. Colgan, Hauke Kite-Powell, Rodney Weiher

Publications

Measuring economic activity associated with the ocean through examination of the goods and services produced by specified industries and in coastal locations will provide answers to many of the most commonly asked questions about the ocean economy. But even this data will still be incomplete. Beyond are a variety of "non-market" values, which are needed to complete the picture. When someone goes to the beach in Florida or boats on Chesapeake Bay, there may be little that is directly purchased on that day. But the popularity of such activities is testament to their underlying value. Economists have developed a variety …

A Model Of Precipitation Rates In Kentucky, 1965-1996, Kevin Cary Apr 2001

A Model Of Precipitation Rates In Kentucky, 1965-1996, Kevin Cary

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Hourly precipitation data from thirty cooperative stations in Kentucky from 1965 to 1996 were used to determine the diurnal distribution of precipitation rates. Descriptive summaries for the diurnal distribution for each climate division in Kentucky and for Kentucky as a whole were calculated. In each case, the trends were similar. Precipitation rates increased into the afternoon and then decreased until sunrise. A stochastic model was developed to estimate mean seasonal precipitation rates in Kentucky by using regional and localized parameters. More than half of the variation (r2 = 0.57) in precipitation rates can be explained by the following variables: 1) …

The Transformation Of The Romanian Criminal Justice System, Stephen R. Bowers Apr 2001

The Transformation Of The Romanian Criminal Justice System, Stephen R. Bowers

Faculty Publications and Presentations

In 1989, Romanian freedom fighters liberated the nation from the yoke of an oppressive dictatorship. As a former communist state, Romania is charting a new course to expanding democracy and a market economy in Eastern Europe. This paper examines the current Romanian criminal justice system in the context of history, geography and government through an examination of the functions and legal framework controlling the three sub-systems (law enforcement, adjudication and corrections) and how youthful offenders are treated. The study finds a need to adopt more fully a systems perspective.

Review Of Paul C. Gutjahr, An American Bible: A History Of The Good Book In The United States, 1777-1880, Susanna Ashton

Publications

The introductory note encapsulates the premise and problems with which An American Bible: A History of the Good Book in the United States, 1777-1880 grapples. Gutjahr writes: "The Bible is a unique book in Western Culture, reflected by the frequent capitalization of the word Bible in general usage. I differ slightly from this practice - by capitalizing the word Bible only when I refer to the work itself, but not when I speak of Bibles collectively" (xiii).

Family Farms Not The Key To Small Town Sustainability, Lisa Darlington Apr 2001

Family Farms Not The Key To Small Town Sustainability, Lisa Darlington

Business in Nebraska

Many rural communities in Nebraska have been losing population and their importance as trade centers for decades. At the same time, the number of family farms has been decreasing, resulting in larger operations run by fewer people. A common assumption is that the decline of small towns in the state, as evidenced by declining population and retail activity, is directly linked to the consolidation of small family farms into larger farms. Conversely, therefore, it is assumed that promoting stability of small farms and even promoting the growth in the number of small farms will lead to a revival of rural …

From Difference To Dominance To Domesticity: Care As Work, Gender As Tradition, Joan Williams Apr 2001

From Difference To Dominance To Domesticity: Care As Work, Gender As Tradition, Joan Williams

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Article introduces the notion of gender not as difference or as dominance, but as tradition. The work of Pierre Bourdieu and Judith Butler are tapped for insights into the cultural system that defines the relationship of market work to family work; the term "domesticity" is used to describe that system. Domesticity is presented as an important, if partial, model that offers crucial insights into the work/family axis of gender—and into the strengths and limitations of conceptualizing work/family issues in terms of "care." This Article argues that "care" is work, and distinguishes seven distinct types of care work.

Conflicting Laws In A Common Market? The Nafta Experiment, H. Patrick Glenn Apr 2001

Conflicting Laws In A Common Market? The Nafta Experiment, H. Patrick Glenn

Chicago-Kent Law Review

NAFTA represents an experimental common market, in which no measures have been taken, at the North American level, to resolve legal diversity and conflicts of laws and jurisdiction. The obvious contrast is with the European Union, with its pan-European institutions and formal program of legal unification. This Article defends the underlying philosophy of NAFTA, as appropriate for North America. There has also been substantial adaptation of the national laws of the NAFTA countries, which indicates that a process of informal harmonization is adequate for common market needs.

African-American Farmers And Fair Lending: Racializing Rural Economic Space, Cassandra Jones Havard Apr 2001

African-American Farmers And Fair Lending: Racializing Rural Economic Space, Cassandra Jones Havard

All Faculty Scholarship

This article critiques the federal policy and legislation that makes USDA a financial intermediary designed to give farmers access to credit in light of the federal class action settlement of claims between African-American farmers and USDA. The challenged statutory scheme allows locally elected farmers to make decisions regarding these low-cost loan funds. USDA's approach has both federalist and economic underpinnings. The article identifies the arguments supporting devolution of power from the federal government to local jurisdictions and examines the competing theories of information costs, transaction costs, and agency costs as they relate to USDA as a financial intermediary. Finally, it …

"The Last Buffalo Hunt" And Beyond Plains Sioux Economic Strategies In The Early Reservation Period, Jeffrey Ostler

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Sometime in late May 1882, several thousand bison appeared on the Great Sioux reservation about 100 miles west of the Standing Rock Indian agency (see Fig. O. According to James McLaughlin, the Standing Rock agent, the Indians knew "instinctively" that the buffalo had arrived, even though "it had been many years since the buffalo had sought the hunting-grounds of that part of the reservation." With this "rich store of succulent meat in sight," McLaughlin continued, "it was not possible that the Indians could be held in check." On 10 June, over 600 Standing Rock Lakota and Yanktonais left the agency. …
