Spatial Distribution Of Phosphorus In Fluvial Sediments From The James River Basin, Sw Missouri, Briain Fredrick Jan 2001

Spatial Distribution Of Phosphorus In Fluvial Sediments From The James River Basin, Sw Missouri, Briain Fredrick

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Degraded ·water quality in the James River Arm of Table Rock Lake, southwest Missouri has raised concerns about sources and transport of nutrients, especially phosphorus, in the James River Basin. Sections of the James River Basin have been identified as having excessive nutrient problems on the Missouri Department of Natural Resources 303d list and ranked fifth in the state for water quality improvements. Understanding the sources and transport patterns of phosphorus in the James River is necessary to evaluate contamination problems and the effectiveness of management efforts to reduce phosphorus inputs to the lake. This study uses bed sediments to …

Spatial Patterns And Floodplain Contributions Of Mining-Related Contaminants In Chat Creek Watershed, Southwest Missouri, Jimmy Trimble Jan 2001

Spatial Patterns And Floodplain Contributions Of Mining-Related Contaminants In Chat Creek Watershed, Southwest Missouri, Jimmy Trimble

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Past mining activities have left a legacy of water quality problems in the Tri-State Mining District. Contemporary environmental risks stem from the release of lead and zinc from mine tailings previously dispersed far downstream in alluvial deposits as well as abandoned tailings piles. This study examines mining-related heavy metal contamination in the Chat Creek Watershed. Chat Creek drains the area near Aurora, Missouri on the eastern edge of the Tri-State District where mining occurred from 1886 to about 1930. This study identifies the spatial distribution of metal contamination in fluvial sediments and quantifies the role of bank erosion as a …

Extraterritorial Merger Regulation: Policies, Problems And A Proposal Explored Through The Planned Dow Chemical And Union Carbide Merger, Stacy L. Eberhart Jan 2001

Extraterritorial Merger Regulation: Policies, Problems And A Proposal Explored Through The Planned Dow Chemical And Union Carbide Merger, Stacy L. Eberhart

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The note examines the inefficiencies of the current dual merger regulation system between the U.S. and EU, particularly in cases involving large corporations like Dow Chemical and Union Carbide. It argues that the similar approval processes of both jurisdictions lead to redundant filings and wasted resources. The note proposes a reformed system where mergers are primarily regulated by the jurisdiction where the companies are incorporated, with joint regulation only in specific circumstances, such as significant market impact or monopolies.

Spatial Assessment Of Nonpoint Phosphorus Sources Using Streambed Sediment Monitoring In The Kings River Basin, Nw Arkansas, Jason W. White Jan 2001

Spatial Assessment Of Nonpoint Phosphorus Sources Using Streambed Sediment Monitoring In The Kings River Basin, Nw Arkansas, Jason W. White

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This study of the Kings River Basin provides a watershed-scale assessment of streambed sediment-Phosphorus (P) and its sources on the landscape. The Kings River drains into Table Rock Lake where surface algal blooms have concerned water scientists and disrupted summer tourism. There are questions about how sediment loads, widespread poultry and cattle operations, and sewage treatment plants are affecting water quality. Previous water quality studies across the U.S. have generally evaluated watercolurnn P. In contrast, few studies have used streambed sediment monitoring to detect P levels at a watershed-scale, and none have been attempted in the Kings River Basin. Sediment …

Evaluation Of Neighborhood Progress, Inc.'S Community Organizing Support Program, Susan Hertzler Burkholder, Kathryn W. Hexter

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

In 1998, the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland began a program-related initiative to increase the availability, affordability and quality of permanent, affordable housing units for low-income and underserved families and persons in Cuyahoga and Lorain Counties. The Affordable Housing Initiative will award approximately six million dollars to community organizations over a five-year period. As part of this initiative, the Foundation funded more than 25 grantees to undertake a variety of non-capital projects. The Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs, Cleveland State University was asked to evaluate the overall initiative and the projects of each of the grantees.

Genealogy Of A State-Engineered “Model Minority”: “Not Quite/Not White” South Asian Americans, Tayyab Mahmud Jan 2001

Genealogy Of A State-Engineered “Model Minority”: “Not Quite/Not White” South Asian Americans, Tayyab Mahmud

Faculty Articles

This is review essay based on Vijay Prashad, The Karma of Brown Folk (Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press 2000). It engages the saga of immigration of South Asian to the United States. A primary focus is on the matrix of identity formation within the grammar of imperialism. It explores how modern regimes of power/knowledge constitute racialized subjects. The deployment of the "model minority" discourse is examined as it relates to South Asian Americans. Structures of power and strategies of resistance among South Asian Americans are highlighted and it is argued that building solidarities among all subordinated is the only viable …

The Political Economy Of Canada's "Widely Held" Rule For Large Banks, Eric J. Gouvin Jan 2001

The Political Economy Of Canada's "Widely Held" Rule For Large Banks, Eric J. Gouvin

Faculty Scholarship

All of the recent changes in foreign access to Canada's banking market have been essentially cosmetic-appearing to make foreign access more liberal while in reality changing the status quo very little. On one point, the so-called widely held rule, Canada does not even bother to pretend that its banking law is friendly to foreign entrants. Under this rule, no person or group may control ten percent or more of a Schedule I bank unless one first obtains the approval of the Minster of Finance. This rule makes foreign acquisition of a Schedule I bank virtually impossible. The widely held rule …

Response: The Values Of Legal Archaeology, Judith L. Maute Jan 2001

Response: The Values Of Legal Archaeology, Judith L. Maute

Utah Law Review

Professor Threedy's ambitious undertaking has provided rich food for thought about this old fish tale. I commend her efforts and urge that she pursue the project further. Besides incorporating the contextual, historical, and biographical materials, I suggest she then step back for a perspective on contracts doctrine, theory, and policy. For the researcher, doing legal archaeology is arduous. When the product is complete, it yields great benefits to understanding the development of the law. I thank her for her labors.

Beyond Plessy: Space, Status, And Race In The Era Of Jim Crow, Barbara Y. Welke Jan 2001

Beyond Plessy: Space, Status, And Race In The Era Of Jim Crow, Barbara Y. Welke

Utah Law Review

In the 1896 case of Plessy v. Ferguson, the United States Supreme Court held that a Louisiana law requiring separate but equal accommodations on railroads for white and black passengers did not violate the Fourteenth Amendment to the U. S. Constitution. By the time of the Supreme Court's decision in Plessy every Southern state except the Carolinas and Virginia had a separate coach law similar to Louisiana's. By 1900, every Southern state required racial separation of white and black passengers on railroads. Within another decade, what is widely called "Jim Crow" applied to every aspect of Southern public life. In …

The Second Amendment: A Case Study In Constitutional Interpretation, Akhil Reed Amar Jan 2001

The Second Amendment: A Case Study In Constitutional Interpretation, Akhil Reed Amar

Utah Law Review

The Rocky Mountain West is gun country in popular folklore and probably also in fact. Reliable numbers are hard to come by, but in one recent survey estimating the percentage of households with handguns, the Mountain states ranked well above the national average-and this in a nation with one of the highest per capita gun ownership rates in the world. Earlier this year, the National Rifle Association (NRA) announced that it would hold its 2007 annual convention here in Salt Lake City, in part to reward Utah's gun-friendly laws and lawmakers. I suspect that a high percentage of Utahns could …

Religion And Spirituality In Counseling : A Multicultural Perspective, Linda G. Culbertson Jan 2001

Religion And Spirituality In Counseling : A Multicultural Perspective, Linda G. Culbertson

Graduate Research Papers

As the counseling profession moves into the 21st Century a greater emphasis is being placed on multicultural and spiritual issues. It is difficult to see how the two entities can be separated. When counselors ignore that a client is Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, or Christian with the unspoken assumption that religion is irrelevant .to their issues, this may jeopardize the forming of an effective therapeutic relationship (Burke, et al., 1999). Knowledge of religion and spiritual beliefs of ethnic groups can help professionals provide care that is culturally specific and sensitive to the beliefs of the individual (Bibbins, 2000).

West Delaware County Community School District Talented And Gifted Program Handbook, Mary Quinlan-Kelley Jan 2001

West Delaware County Community School District Talented And Gifted Program Handbook, Mary Quinlan-Kelley

Graduate Research Papers

Every district should have a program handbook that describes its talented and gifted program. The West Delaware School District especially needed such a document because of the many requests for information from faculty, administration, and parents concerning such areas as identification, organization, and purpose of the talented and gifted program that arise year after year.

Program handbook development began by sending out a needs assessment to parents, teachers, administration, and students. Based on the discovery of the needs of our district, a new philosophy, format, and identification process were constructed. In addition, the development of written goals and a yearly …
