Humanitarian Health Education Programming: Diffusion Of Health Messages Through Folk Media, Archana Daya Shankar
Humanitarian Health Education Programming: Diffusion Of Health Messages Through Folk Media, Archana Daya Shankar
International Journal of Global Health
For several decades, numerous health programs for the underserved have been launched in rural areas of developing countries. World organization, NGO's and government agencies have been allocating a significant portion of their budgets for developing health education programs for underserved population in different parts of the world. The success rate of reaching the goals of these programs has been very slow. For example, in India experience in rural health development has clearly indicated that isolated urban health programs do not provide appropriate assistance to the underserved sections of society (Hedge, 1997).

LSAY Technical Reports
Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth is a program of surveys of young people conducted by ACER with funding from the Commonwealth Department of Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs. The surveys focus on the education and labour market experiences of groups of young Australians, beginning from their middle years of secondary schooling. Data collected include basic demographic variables, as well as information about educational and labour force participation extending over a number of years. Students participating in LSAY were originally sampled in 1995 from 298 schools nationally. In 1996 the schools from which the original sample of students was drawn, …

The Forester's Dilemma : Paradoxes In The Criteria And Indicators For Sustainable Forestry, Theodore E. Howard
The Forester's Dilemma : Paradoxes In The Criteria And Indicators For Sustainable Forestry, Theodore E. Howard
New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station Publications
Since sustainable forestry is a complex endeavor, paradoxes naturally exist in the certification criteria and indicators. There are different ways to establish the sustainability horizon and alternative harvest profiles that, although sustainable, may not meet specific criteria. The application of historic range of variation data and criteria must confront issues of time and spatial scales as well as how much human disturbance is natural. Defining “local” in the bioregional context is important for addressing socioeconomic criteria. The forester’s ability to deal with the self-contradictions in the criteria and indicators of sustainable forestry will improve with experience in the certification process.

Downscaling Temperature And Precipitation: A Comparison Of Regression-Based Methods And Artificial Neural Networks, Justin T. Schoof, S C. Pryor
Publications
A comparison of two statistical downscaling methods for daily maximum and minimum surface air temperature, total daily precipitation and total monthly precipitation at Indianapolis, IN, USA, is presented. The analysis is conducted for two seasons, the growing season and the non-growing season, defined based on variability of surface air temperature. The predictors used in the downscaling are indices of the synoptic scale circulation derived from rotated principal components analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis of variables extracted from an 18-year record from seven rawinsonde stations in the Midwest region of the United States. PCA yielded seven significant components for the growing …

Enhancing Rural Sustainability Project Status Report
Enhancing Rural Sustainability Project Status Report
University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications
For the past year, the PPC has been working to identify a small list of key issues related to enhancing rural sustainability that would benefit from University research, with special attention paid to research activities already underway or in the planning process at the University. We also have been considering procedural options to determine the best way to facilitate the research to be conducted.

Sustaining Agropastoralism on the Bolivian Altiplano: The Case of San José Llanga
To better understand today’s constraints and opportunities for improving small ruminant production systems on the Bolivian Altiplano, it is important to first consider the broader contexts of environment and social history. This chapter provides an introductory overview of secondary information concerning major ecological regions of Bolivia, constituent agroecosystems and how ecological regions are interrelated in terms of climate, geography, macro-economics and agricultural policy. Key aspects of cultural change and political history are also reviewed. These are important because present-day values and behaviours of Andean campesinos, as well as their use of agricultural technologies, have been profoundly shaped by forces including …

Experimental Study Of The Transport Of Mixed Sand And Gravel, Peter Wilcock, S. T. Kenworthy, J. C. Crowe
Experimental Study Of The Transport Of Mixed Sand And Gravel, Peter Wilcock, S. T. Kenworthy, J. C. Crowe
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
We measured a wide range of transport rates for five different sand/gravel mixtures in a laboratory flume. Each mixture used the same gravel, and sand was added to produce mixtures containing 6, 15, 21, 27, and 34% sand. Control of other variables allows us to isolate the effect of bed sand content on transport. As sand content increases, gravel transport rates increase by orders of magnitude, even though the proportion of gravel in the bed decreases. The increase in gravel transport rate is most rapid over the range of bed sand content between 15 and 27%. The increase in transport …

Determinants Of Life Expectancies In U.S. Counties, L. Dwight Israelsen, Ryan D. Israelsen, Karl E. Israelsen
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
There is a large variability in both female and male life expectancies by county in the U.S. We develop and test a model of the impact of demographic, economic, educational, social, and geographic factors on mean life expectancy by county for males and females born in 1990 . We find that the percentage of population on rural farms, the percentage of married households, the level of education, the percentage speaking a language other than English at home, the percentage foreign-born, and county elevation have significant positive effects on life expectancy for both males and females; while the percentage of population …

Ethnic Differences In Risk From Mercury Among Savannah River Fishermen, Joanna Burger, Karen F. Gaines, Michael Gochfeld
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Fishing plays an important role in people's lives and contaminant levels in fish are a public health concern. Many states have issued consumption advisories; South Carolina and Georgia have issued them for the Savannah River based on mercury and radionuclide levels. This study examined ethnic differences in risk from mercury exposure among people consuming fish from the Savannah River, based on site-specific consumption patterns and analysis of mercury in fish. Among fish, there were significant interspecies differences in mercury levels, and there were ethnic differences in consumption patterns. Two methods of examining risk are presented: (1) Hazard Index (HI), and …
