Native American Language Rentention: How Can Educators Help Preserve Indigenous Languages And Better Accommodate Native Americans?, Alison Mercer-Curtis

Honors Capstones

English language learners (ELL) are becoming increasingly prevalent in the American classroom. Students are coming into the school systems with little to no knowledge of the English language. These ELL students thus must begin learning the English language while attempting to complete their coursework completely, effectively, end efficiently. With recent requirements proposed by No Child Left Behind (NCLB), ELL students are required to pass standardized tests and meet learning standards proposed by the NCLB. Although some supports and resources are provided for ELL students, these students still struggle to keep-up with curriculum, with language being the main reason they fall …

The "Good Will" Religions : A Comparative Study Of Hinduism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity And Islam, Mary Ellen Fieseler

Honors Capstones

Religion had its inception in man's ignorance and fear of the world around him. It was a path toward satisfying man's quest for the signifance of life. As this path was pursued, the meaning and value humans ascribed to the world evolved, forming the various religions of the world. During the greatest of all religious eras, 800 to 500 BCE, India, China, Persia and Israel all imparted into human thought and practice a new god-concept, a fundamental conception of benevolent good will, and accompanying this new god-concept were changes in the religious rules that determined human conduct. This research outlines …

Revitalization Not Retirement: A Case For Transformative Professional Development That Echoes The Voices Of Eight Veteran Literacy Teachers, Mary Ann Johnson

Educational Studies Dissertations

Guided by the central question "How do professional development opportunities regarding the use of running records effect the thinking and practice of veteran teachers ?", this study investigated the way in which eight highly experienced literacy teachers learned to use formative assessment to guide instruction of a student at risk of failure in reading. From the most veteran teacher with thirty-three years to the "baby" with fifteen years of service to children, they represented a seasoned group of early childhood professionals willing to grapple with formative assessment, a concept for which all admitted they had been ill-prepared. Through this action …

Bridging Connections Between Teachers' Racial Identities And Their Teaching Practices, Sandras M. Barnes

Educational Studies Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine how three Black female teachers and three White female teachers of kindergarten, first grade, and eighth grade understand the connections between their racial identity and their teaching practices . Specifically, it sought to understand how they experience their first awareness of racial difference and the influence their family, community, and school had on their construct of race. Also, how their preparation to teach reinforced, expanded, altered, or demystified their understanding of racial differences as a means to teach all children . The study used a phenomenologically based, lived experienced methodology to interview …

Doing Theology In The City, Paul Fitzgerald Jan 2001

Doing Theology In The City, Paul Fitzgerald

Special Topics, General

The task of theology is often a lonely endeavor. The hush of the library or the archives, the still of the chapel, and the quiet discipline of one's desk are places where theological research and writing unfold, most often in solitary concentration. The classroom on the protected college campus or seminary, the academic conference in large hotels, and even the cherished conversation in the homes of colleagues do open the theologian to other minds and hearts so that theories and insights may be tested in dialogue. However, these exchanges are often located in affluent social contexts which cannot reveal the …

Review Of English Syntax: From Word To Discourse By Lynn M. Berk, Frank Bramlett

English Faculty Publications

Berk prefaces this book by stating that her ‘overall approach is loosely discourse/functional’ and that she tries ‘to ensure that students learn the basics of English grammar but that at the same time they come to understand the richness and complexity of the system’ (xv). In the main, B fulfills her promise by exploring a variety of grammatical concepts and the way many of those grammatical structures function discursively.

Coming into the ninth grade, Jon Porges was admittedly "a shy guy" who had a learning disability and who had never volunteered in his life, but when he sat down in freshman English class at Waterford High School in Waterford, Connecticut, in 1996, a slow transformation - life a cocoon becoming a butterfly - took place.

Lessons Learned About Service-Learning: Voices Of Experience About Urban Service-Learning In Saint Paul Public Schools, Saint Paul Public Schools

School K-12

Quality service-learning transforms students, schools and communities. Service-learning creates powerful learning experiences for students and strengthens ties between schools and community. While integrating curricular goals with a real community need, service-learning gives students the power and the voice to work for social change in their world. It engages them in their own learning process. Students become active learners and creators of history who have opportunities to realize their collective and personal power to make a difference. In order to engage in this kind of learning, teachers together with students must work to establish quality partnerships and collaboration with community organizations …

Making Words Sing And Dance: Sense, Style And Sound In Yoruba Prose Translation, Pamela J. Olúbùnmi Smith Jan 2001

Making Words Sing And Dance: Sense, Style And Sound In Yoruba Prose Translation, Pamela J. Olúbùnmi Smith

Goodrich Scholarship Faculty Publications

Ordinarily in prose translation, rhythm is usually not a matter of great concern for the translator. Unlike poetry, with its comparatively rigid form, prose, by its very nature, permits a free form fluidity, giving the translator a certain kind of carte blanche “prosaic” license. However, in language-driven texts, as is the case in the novels of Yoruba creative writer D.O. Fagunwa, the translator has to be ever mindful of the author's purposeful inter-linking of the aesthetic value of sound to the cognitive meaning of the text.
