Working With People To Make Art: Oral History, Artistic Practice, And Art Education, Dipti Desai Jan 2001

Working With People To Make Art: Oral History, Artistic Practice, And Art Education, Dipti Desai

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

In recent years, some contemporary artists have used oral history methods as an integral part of their artistic practice. Oral history emerged in the United States as a distinct historical method with the establishment of the first organized oral history project in 1948 by Alan Nevin at Columbia University in New York. It gradually wrenched itself from its elitist origins of documenting stories of prominent white men to becoming a populist approach that draws attention to ordinary people’s lives, perceptions, and experiences of an event. Based on interviews conducted over a short period of time, oral histories’ primary contribution to …

A Comparison Of Pre-Post Student Outcomes And Perceptions After An Intervention Of A Secondary Alternative Education Program For Disruptive Students, Lloyd Sain, Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to describe the effect of an alternative education program on the grade point averages, attendance, and suspensions of secondary school students. In order to meet this purpose, the study tested two research questions that focused on the grade point average, attendance, and suspensions of disruptive secondary school students prior to their intervention of an alternative education program and after their return to home school for two consecutive nine weeks. Length of enrollment and its impact on grade point averages, attendance, and suspensions were also examined. The study also investigated to what extent the characteristics …

A Study Of Arkansas Public School Superintendents' Knowledge Of And Attitudes Toward Charter Schools, William E. Broadnax

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore reasons why most public school superintendents have not applied for the creation of a charter school, and to ascertain whether or not public school superintendents in Arkansas plan to open a charter school in their school district. In essence, this study investigated current knowledge and attitudes of Arkansas public school superintendents toward charter schools and Act 890 legislation. A non-experimental research design was conducted using a modified survey instrument (Ogden, 1995), which included all 310 public school superintendents in the State of Arkansas. A nonprobability sample of 160 superintendents completed and returned …

A Combinatorial Interpretation Of Bessel Polynomials And Their First Derivatives As Ordered Hit Polynomials, John P. Mcsorley, Philip Feinsilver Jan 2001

A Combinatorial Interpretation Of Bessel Polynomials And Their First Derivatives As Ordered Hit Polynomials, John P. Mcsorley, Philip Feinsilver

Articles and Preprints

Consider the hit polynomial of the path P_{2n} embedded in the complete graph K_{2n}. We give a combinatorial interpretation of the n-th Bessel polynomial in terms of a modification of this hit polynomial, called the ordered hit polynomial. Also, the first derivative of the n-th Bessel polynomial is shown to be the ordered hit polynomial of P_{2n-1} embedded in K_{2n}.

Cannabinoids And The Immune System, Thomas W. Klein, Catherine A. Newton, Herman Friedman Jan 2001

Cannabinoids And The Immune System, Thomas W. Klein, Catherine A. Newton, Herman Friedman

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

The effect of cannabimimetic agents on the function of immune cells such as T and B lymphocytes, natural killer cells and macrophages has been extensively studied over the past several decades using human and animal paradigms involving whole animal models as well as tissue culture systems. From this work, it can be concluded that these drugs have subtle yet complex effects on immune cell function and that some of the drug activity is mediated by cannabinoid receptors expressed on the various immune cell subtypes. However, the overall role of the cannabinoid system of receptors and ligands in human health and …

Stabilization Of Partially Folded Conformation During Α-Synuclein Oligomerization In Both Purified And Cytosolic Preparations, Vladimir N. Uversky, He-Jin Lee, Jie Li, Anthony L. Fink, Seung-Jae Lee Jan 2001

Stabilization Of Partially Folded Conformation During Α-Synuclein Oligomerization In Both Purified And Cytosolic Preparations, Vladimir N. Uversky, He-Jin Lee, Jie Li, Anthony L. Fink, Seung-Jae Lee

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Aggregation of α-synuclein is tightly associated with many neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy body, Lewy body variant of Alzheimer's disease, multiple system atrophy, and Hallervorden-Spatz disease, implicating a crucial role of aggregated forms of α-synuclein in the pathogenesis. Here, we examined the effect of elevated temperature on the oligomerization and structural changes of α-synuclein in the early stage of aggregation and show that self-assembly is crucial for the stabilization of a partially folded conformation. The efficiency of α-synuclein oligomerization increased proportional to the temperature increase, both in purified form and in crude cytosolic preparation. This oligomerization …

Exercising Self-Determination Without Jeopardising The Rights Of The Others: The Catalan Model, Puig I. Scotoni Jan 2001

Exercising Self-Determination Without Jeopardising The Rights Of The Others: The Catalan Model, Puig I. Scotoni

St. Thomas Law Review

I have entitled my remarks "Exercising self-determination without jeopardising the rights of the others: the Catalan model."' This is because present day Catalan nationalism strives to make the interests of Catalonia compatible with those of Spain and the European Union. In my opinion, such political restraint and flexibility is one of the most remarkable aspects of the Catalan model.

Indigenous Autonomy And Its Problems: A Vision From The Russian Far East, Petra Rethmann Jan 2001

Indigenous Autonomy And Its Problems: A Vision From The Russian Far East, Petra Rethmann

St. Thomas Law Review

This essay discusses one vision of self-determination among Luoravetlan women and men in the Chukotka peninsula in the Russian Far East. Self-determination can have many meanings, but the one this essay emphasizes is based on tradition: on the intricate connections between humans, animals, and land, with shared premises, close kin groups, and local production relations. Contemporary Luoravetlan women and men argue that self-determination is bound to fail if it does not take serious the complex interrelations between people and the land in which their social understandings are rooted, and through which their core institutions and values are ensured. This essay …

The Transition To College Process In Pr-Cetp Scholars, E. Rivera, M. Rosa, A. Santiago, N. Torres, M. Bravo

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

This article describes a study about the experiences of a group of students during the transition from high school to college. The students are future teachers who evidenced a high level of academic achievement in high school and received merit scholarships from the Puerto Rico Collaborative for Excellence in Teacher Preparation (PR-CETP). Two groups of students were compared: those who sustained a high GPA during their freshman year, and those who did not and, therefore, no longer qualified for the scholarship. The study was carried out through focused interviews with eight students, from three universities, four of whom maintained the …

From Chinatown To Gunga Din Highway: Notes On Frank Chin's Writing Strategy, Juan E. San Jr Jan 2001

From Chinatown To Gunga Din Highway: Notes On Frank Chin's Writing Strategy, Juan E. San Jr

Ethnic Studies Review

Exploring Frank Chin's work, particularly in his latest novel Gunga Din Highway, the essay endeavors to re-situate ethnic writing in the historical specificity of its inscription in the United States as a racial polity. This cognitive remapping of the literary field as reconfigured by multiculturalist liberalism may be accomplished by examining Chin's cultural politics. Chin's mode of strategic writing interrogates the modelminority myth and the premises of cultural nationalism. While it rejects the pluralist resolution of the traditional conflicts in the Chinese diaspora, Chin's satiric impulse proposes a defamiliarization of Asian American "common sense" adequate to provoke a revaluation of …

Defending All-Male Education: A New Cultural Moment For A Renewed Debate, Stephen H. Webb Jan 2001

Defending All-Male Education: A New Cultural Moment For A Renewed Debate, Stephen H. Webb

Fordham Urban Law Journal

Although all-female schools still prosper and are defended by members of the academic elite, an all-male college has become a near-extinct species. Many people are surprised such a creature still exists. All-male colleges strike many as vestiges of male privilege. They evoke the traditional bastions of power that precluded women from advancing in public life. Single-sex education is not for everyone, but if our educational system is to be truly pluralistic, such an education should be an option. Single-sex education for both genders can be a constructive way to address problems plaguing not only education but the culture as a …

The Children's School: Lessons For Inclusion, Leadership, And School Success, Beth Lief Jan 2001

The Children's School: Lessons For Inclusion, Leadership, And School Success, Beth Lief

Fordham Urban Law Journal

In recent years education has evolved into the country's number one public concern. Presidential, gubernatorial, mayoral, and legislative candidates all claim to care about educating our children. Successful schools should be used by educators and policy-makers as models. In order to reproduce the success of these schools, the reasons for their success must be identified. A school's achievement data gives important indications of why it succeeds. There are also innumerable studies and reports listing factors enabling school success. The Children's School in Brooklyn, New York is a school worthy of study. The leadership is superb; teachers know their students and …
