Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)
Multipacting is one of the major loss mechanisms in rf superconductivity cavities for accelerators. This loss mechanism limits the maximum amount of energy/power supported by the cavities. Optimal designs have been identified in others’ studies. In practice, these designs are not easily manufactured. Chemical etching processes used to polish the cavity walls result in a nonuniform surface etch compromising the optimal geometrical design. Past multipacting studies have not examined the impact of wall perturbations.
It is the purpose of this study to examine the chemical etching process in the design of niobium cavities so to maximize the surface quality of …

Dartmouth Scholarship
The Century Survey strip covers 102 deg2 within the limits 85 ≤ α ≤ 165, 290 ≤ δ ≤ 300, equinox B1950.0. The strip passes through the Corona Borealis supercluster and the outer region of the Coma cluster. Within the Century Survey region, we have measured 2410 redshifts that constitute four overlapping complete redshift surveys: (1) 1728 galaxies with Kron-Cousins Rph ≤ 16.13 covering the entire strip, (2) 507 galaxies with Rph ≤ 16.4 in right ascension range 8h32m ≤ α ≤ 10 h45m, equinox B1950.0, (3) 1251 galaxies with absorption- …

Operational Experiences With The Petite Amateur Navy Satellite – Pansat, Ronald Phelps
Operational Experiences With The Petite Amateur Navy Satellite – Pansat, Ronald Phelps
Small Satellite Conference
This paper provides an overview of PANSAT’s on-orbit performance by discussing how the integration process, design decisions, and space environment have affected mission operations. PANSAT, in its third year of operation, is providing a large quantity of telemetry, some of which has been analyzed by officer students at the Naval Postgraduate School. Battery temperatures and charge cycles, EDAC errors as well as solar panel currents, are some of the telemetry data that were analyzed to gain insight about satellite performance.

Small Satellite Conference
The Earth Observing 1 (EO-1) spacecraft is one of the most trouble-free spacecraft that NASA has launched in the last ten years. A NASA New Millennium Program (NMP) mission dedicated to validating revolutionary technologies that will be used in future government and commercial missions, EO-1 was launched in November 2000 and flies in formation with Landsat 7. As the prime contractor, Swales Aerospace designed and built the spacecraft bus, integrated and tested the EO-1 observatory, and performed launch-site operations. Developed under the faster-better-cheaper philosophy, EO-1 is an example of a successful low-cost mission. We describe the mission, its new technologies, …

Multispectral Thermal Imager (Mti) Satellite Imaging Operations And Performance , Max Decker, R. Rex Kay, Glenn Rackley
Small Satellite Conference
MTI is a comprehensive R&D project, featuring a single satellite in sun-synchronous orbit designed to collect radiometrically accurate images of instrumented ground sites in 15 spectral bands ranging from visible to long-wave infrared. The satellite was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base on March 12, 2000 aboard an Orbital Sciences Corporation Taurus rocket. After launch, the operations team completed a 3-month turn-on, checkout and alignment procedure, and declared the satellite ready for its R&D mission on June 14, 2000. The satellite has collected over 1850 images in support of its research mission. This paper presents a brief satellite overview and …

The Little Probe That Could! (A Story Of Mission Impossible Engineering) , T. Adams, D. Downs, G. Murphy, K. Neal
Small Satellite Conference
Starting with the Space Shuttle flight 4A (Nov. 30, 2000), the International Space Station (ISS) power system employs large, high voltage, solar arrays with the negative ground tied to chassis. An intense study by a NASA sponsored Tiger Team in the early ‘90s determined that this configuration leads to the structure being at a high negative potential relative to the local plasma (approximately 140v negative without any intervention) and, that at any potential greater than around 70v negative, the anodized aluminum structure and its components will undergo destructive arcing. A set of plasma contactor units (PCUs) was deployed to provide …
Efficient Satellite Structural Design Optimised For Volume Production, Angelos Tsinas, Christopher Welch
Efficient Satellite Structural Design Optimised For Volume Production, Angelos Tsinas, Christopher Welch
Small Satellite Conference
In the past, the limited number and production volume of satellites has meant that their structural design has been essentially a one-off procedure. As a result, the most common choice of primary structural medium has been metal. Although eminently reliable and highly proven, this option has led to a comparatively high structural mass fraction of 20-24%. The emergence of communications satellite constellations creates the need for a complete reappraisal of current design practices. Emphasis needs to be given in the implementation of volume production methods, already matured through experience in the aviation industry, to manufacture of satellites. The prospect of …
The Small Payload Access To Space Experiment (Spase): Using Non-Traditional Aerospace Technology To Enable A New Generation Of Low-Cost Missions, Scott Mcdermott, L. Eric Aamot
The Small Payload Access To Space Experiment (Spase): Using Non-Traditional Aerospace Technology To Enable A New Generation Of Low-Cost Missions, Scott Mcdermott, L. Eric Aamot
Small Satellite Conference
Launching on STS-108 Endeavour in late 2001, the Small Payload Access to Space Experiment (SPASE) demonstrates a number of new technologies, efficient ways to conduct a nanospacecraft development program, and how to take such a spacecraft through the Shuttle Hitchhiker safety and integration process. This paper describes the essential “lessons learned” in each of these areas. Commercial solar panels, batteries, imagers, photocells, integrated circuits, and manufacturing techniques are used throughout the vehicle, bringing the low cost and high manufacturing reliability of these products into the space realm. Core personnel carried the program from conception through proposal, requirements definition, design, development, …
A Feasibility Study Of Micro-Satellites For Earth Observation, Joshua Levi, Peter Washabaugh
A Feasibility Study Of Micro-Satellites For Earth Observation, Joshua Levi, Peter Washabaugh
Small Satellite Conference
There is a continuing desire to minimize the fabrication, launch, and operational costs of Earth-observing satellites, while still maintaining their high-resolution capabilities. Micro-satellites have been suggested as a method for obtaining these results using several different configurations; such as conventional filled aperture optics, distributed aperture systems, constellations and tethers. The ability of the different spacecraft types to achieve images of a specified resolution and quality are examined, as are their affects on the mass and size of the spacecraft. However, first a minimum spacecraft size is discussed and formulated for missions of this and similar types. This is used as …

Crafti: A Canadian Asteroid Mission, Henry Spencer, Alex Beattie, Robert Zee
Small Satellite Conference
Historically, planetary exploration has been performed using large, complex, and costly spacecraft that have attempted to bring a laboratory of instruments with them. Only in the early days of the American and Russian space programs were the missions less complex and more focused. The Canadian Robotic Asteroid Flyby and Tentatively Impact (CRAFTI) mission proposes to return to some of the philosophies of that era, and to bring modern microsatellite design philosophies into planetary exploration. The CRAFTI mission is a concept study being undertaken by the University of Toronto Institute of Aerospace Studies Space Flight Laboratory (UTIAS-SFL) and the Canadian Space …
Single Injection Earth Return Trajectory Options For Small Spacecraft Missions To The Moon, Cesar Ocampo, Shawn Hayes, Robert Twiggs
Single Injection Earth Return Trajectory Options For Small Spacecraft Missions To The Moon, Cesar Ocampo, Shawn Hayes, Robert Twiggs
Small Satellite Conference
There exist several classes of high energy trajectories that are injected from Earth centered orbits to deep space destinations and return to the vicinity of the Earth sometime later due to the direct influence of a third body perturbation. These trajectories can be designed to flyby the moon or near Earth asteroids and comets. The appealing characteristic of these trajectories is that they require a single injection maneuver at the Earth and no further translational control thereafter. A spacecraft on such a trajectory can take observations and measurements of the flyby body and download the data once it returns to …
