Charge Transfer And X-Ray Emission Reactions Involving Highly Charged Ions And Neutral Hydrogen, J. A. Perez, Ronald E. Olson, P. Beiersdorfer

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The electron capture from hydrogen by highly charged-bare ions was studied using a three-body classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) method. The state-selective capture cross sections, calculated for a wide range of collision energies, were used to estimate x-ray emission cross sections. The capture process produced excited hydrogen-like ions and captured majority of electrons into one or two dopant states at low collision energies. The calculations predicted a large increase in the fraction of prompt x-rays produced with the lowering of the collision energy. The analysis suggested that ionization potential change for each collision and multiple capture played significant role in …

A Novel Concept For Monitoring Of Maritime Traffic By Micro-Satellites, B.T. Narheim, T. Eriksen, G.K. Høye, T. Wahl

Small Satellite Conference

A concept for monitoring of maritime traffic by micro-satellites has been studied at FFI [1]. The concept is based on localization of maritime vessels by passive detection of their X-band navigation radar (3 cm wavelength), and subsequent direction finding and determination of the geographic position. A Phase-A study [3] on the utilization of this concept, for monitoring of the maritime traffic in ocean areas under Norwegian jurisdiction has demonstrated the feasibility of the concept. Localization of vessels can be performed to an accuracy of 1 km or better from a micro-satellite orbiting at 600 km altitude. The concept requires the …

Techsat 21 And Revolutionizing Space Missions Using Microsatellites, Maurice Martin, Pete Klupar, Steve Kilberg, James Winter

Small Satellite Conference

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) TechSat 21 flight experiment demonstrates a formation of three microsatellites flying in formation to operate as a “virtual satellite.” X-band transmit and receive payloads on each of the satellites form a large sparse aperture system. The satellite formation can be configured to optimize such varied missions as radio frequency (RF) sparse aperture imaging, precision geolocation, ground moving target indication (GMTI), single-pass digital terrain elevation data (DTED), electronic protection, single-pass interferometric synthetic aperture radar (IF-SAR), and high data-rate, secure communications. Benefits of such a microsatellite formation over single large satellites include unlimited aperture size and …

433 Eros Landing – Development Of Near Shoemaker’S Controlled Descent Sequence , Robert Nelson, Karl Whittenburg, Mark Holdridge

Small Satellite Conference

On February 12th, 2001, the NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft made its historic descent to the surface of the asteroid 433 Eros, becoming the first spacecraft to soft land on a small celestial body. Development of the final descent activity offered the NEAR team a difficult technical challenge as the spacecraft had been designed solely as a free flyer, not as a lander. The NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft rendezvoused with 433 Eros on February 14th, 2000. Following an intensive year of orbital operations collecting science data at decreasingly lower altitudes, the spacecraft was prepared to conduct its final activity, descending from its current …

Solar neutrinos from 8B decay have been detected at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory via the charged current (CC) reaction on deuterium and the elastic scattering (ES) of electrons. The flux of νe’s is measured by the CC reaction rate to be φCC(ve) = 1.75 ± 0.07(stat)+0.12−0.11(syst) ± 0.05(theor) × 106 cm−2s−1. Comparison of φCC(ve) to the Super-Kamiokande Collaboration’s precision value of the flux inferred from the ES reaction yields a 3.3σ difference, assuming the systematic uncertainties are normally distributed, providing evidence of an active non-ve component in the solar flux. The total flux of active 8B neutrinos is determined to …

An Examination Of The Mitoura (Lycaenidae) In The Southeastern United States: With The Description Of A New Subspecies Of Mitoura Hesseli, Ronald R. Gatrelle

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

Four subspecies of Mitoura grynea occur in the United States east of the Mississippi River. The nominate subspecies occupies this entire area except for Florida and the coastal regions of South Carolina and Georgia. Mitoura g. grynea is usually associated with Juniperus virginiana. A neotype is designated for Lycus gryneus from Aiken County, South Carolina. Mitoura grynea smilacis is endemic to the southeastern coastal islands and coastal mainland from about Brunswick Georgia north to the Santee River delta of South Carolina. Smilacis’ range corresponds to that of Juniperus silicicola in that area. A neotype is designated for …

An Examination Of Southeastern U. S. Satyrium (Lycaenidae: Theclinae), Part Two: The Identification And Delimitation Of Nominate Satyrium Liparops And The Description Of A New Subspecies From West Central Peninsular Florida, Ronald R. Gatrelle Aug 2001

An Examination Of Southeastern U. S. Satyrium (Lycaenidae: Theclinae), Part Two: The Identification And Delimitation Of Nominate Satyrium Liparops And The Description Of A New Subspecies From West Central Peninsular Florida, Ronald R. Gatrelle

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

The name Satyrium liparops liparops has traditionally been applied to all liparops populations from eastern Georgia southward. This tradition is shown to be in error. The type locality of nominate liparops is restricted by original description to Screven County, Georgia. A neotype is designated from Screven County and deposited in the Museum of the Hemispheres (MOTH) collection Goose Creek, South Carolina. The range of nominate liparops is projected to be from coastal South Carolina across the far southern United States (including the Florida panhandle) and into Texas. The population in west central peninsular Florida is described as new subspecies S …

Measurement Of The Inclusive Jet Cross Section In Pp̅ Collisions At √S =1.8 Tev, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration Aug 2001

Measurement Of The Inclusive Jet Cross Section In Pp̅ Collisions At √S =1.8 Tev, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present results from the measurement of the inclusive jet cross section for jet transverse energies from 40 to 465 GeV in the pseudorapidity range 0.1<|η|-1 of data collected by the CDF Collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The data are consistent with previously published results. The data are also consistent with QCD predictions given the flexibility allowed from current knowledge of the proton parton distributions. We develop a new procedure for ranking the agreement of the parton distributions with data and find that the data are best described by QCD predictions using the parton distribution functions which have a large gluon contribution at high ET (CTEQ4HJ).

The purpose of the study was to determine patron satisfaction with the interlibrary loan system at Camden County Library in New Jersey. The researcher experienced the interlibrary loan process fist-hand at the main library in Voorhees. Protecting patron confidentiality and anonymity, a four-page questionnaire survey was included with 150 interlibrary loan items that were picked up by patrons between March 9, 2000 and June 6, 2000. Of the 79 surveys returned, 76 were usable for this study. The overall conclusion is that respondents were satisfied: 96.05% were satisfied with staff helpfulness, 82.89% were satisfied with the time it took to …

Terabit Burst Switching, Jonathan S. Turner Aug 2001

Terabit Burst Switching, Jonathan S. Turner

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This report summarizes progress on Washington University's Terabit Burst Switching Project, supported by DARPA and Rome Air Force Laboratory. This project seeks to demonstrate the feasibility of Burst Switching, a new data communication service which can more effectively exploit the large bandwidths becoming available in WDM transmission systems, than conventional communication technologies like ATM and IP-based packet switching. Burst switching systems dynamically assign data bursts to channels in optical data links, using routing information carried in parallel control channels. The project will lead to the construction of a demonstration switch with throughput exceeding 200 Gb/s and scalable to over 10 …

Selenium Metabolism In Drosophila, F. Javier Martin-Romero, Gregory V. Kryukov, Alexei V. Lobanov, Bradley A. Carlson, Byeong Jae Lee, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Dolph L. Hatfield

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Selenocysteine is a rare amino acid in protein that is encoded by UGA with the requirement of a downstream mRNA stem-loop structure, the selenocysteine insertion sequence element. To detect selenoproteins in Drosophila, the entire genome was analyzed with a novel program that searches for selenocysteine insertion sequence elements, followed by selenoprotein gene signature analyses. This computational screen and subsequent metabolic labeling with 75Se and characterization of selenoprotein mRNA expression resulted in identification of three selenoproteins: selenophosphate synthetase 2 and novel G-rich and BthD selenoproteins that had no homology to known proteins. To assess a biological role for these …
