Revolutionary Propulsion Concepts For Small Satellites, Steven Wassom Aug 2001

Revolutionary Propulsion Concepts For Small Satellites, Steven Wassom

Small Satellite Conference

This paper addresses the results of a trade study in which four novel propulsion approaches are applied to a 100-kg-class satellite designed for rendezvous, reconnaissance, and other on-orbit operations. The technologies, which are currently at a NASA technology readiness level of 4, are known as solar thermal propulsion, digital solid motor, water-based propulsion, and solid pulse motor. Sizing calculations are carried out using analytical and empirical parameters to determine the propellant and inert masses and volumes. The results are compared to an offthe- shelf hydrazine system using a trade matrix “scorecard.” Other factors considered besides mass and volume include safety, …

Micro Digital Solar Attitude Detector And Imager, Stephen Jaskulek, Kim Strohbehn, Mark Martin Aug 2001

Micro Digital Solar Attitude Detector And Imager, Stephen Jaskulek, Kim Strohbehn, Mark Martin

Small Satellite Conference

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) has developed the first generation of a micro digital solar attitude detector (DSAD). The micro-DSAD (ìDSAD) design is based on our patented approach of combining a centroiding position-sensitive active-pixel architecture with standard imaging capability for providing optional “engineering channel” images. This approach avoids the need for a DSP (digital signal processor) in computing the position, thus dramatically lowering the required mass and power resources. The ìDSAD technology is presently at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 5. We have demonstrated robust performance, significant total dose radiation tolerance, and single-event latchup immunity on small format …

Design And Development Of A Compact Magnetic Bearing Momentum Wheel For Micro And Small Satellites , Michael Scharfe, Thomas Roschke, Enrico Bindl, Daniel Blonski Aug 2001

Design And Development Of A Compact Magnetic Bearing Momentum Wheel For Micro And Small Satellites , Michael Scharfe, Thomas Roschke, Enrico Bindl, Daniel Blonski

Small Satellite Conference

Reaction and momentum wheels have become standard equipment for three-axis attitude stabilisation of conventional satellite classes as used e.g. for telecommunication and remote sensing missions. Owing to very compact mechanical designs and highly integrated electronics, wheels are now also more and more interesting for small satellites up to 100…200 kg with increasingly demanding requirements on attitude control. Wheels suitable for small satellites have a typical momentum capacity up to approximately 0.4 Nms, and masses up to about 2 kg. All existing miniature wheels known to the authors are relying on ball bearings for rotor suspension, which may limit the lifetime …

A Nanosatellite Mission To Investigate Equatorial Ionospheric Plasma Depletions: The U. S. Air Force Academy’S Falconsat-2, L. Habash Krause, J.J. Sellers, C.L. Enloe, R. Humble, J. White Aug 2001

A Nanosatellite Mission To Investigate Equatorial Ionospheric Plasma Depletions: The U. S. Air Force Academy’S Falconsat-2, L. Habash Krause, J.J. Sellers, C.L. Enloe, R. Humble, J. White

Small Satellite Conference

An overview of the United States Air Force Academy’s (USAFA’s) FalconSat-2, a nanosatellite designed to investigate F region ionospheric plasma depletions, is presented. Instruments aboard FalconSat-2 will sample in situ plasma density and temperature at a rate of 10 Hz and 1.0 Hz, respectively. The choice of sampling rate provides for resolution of 2-10 km plasma depletions, important since plasma anisotropies of this scale size are known to disrupt Ultra High Frequency (UHF) radio transmissions. A novel sensor, the Miniature Electrostatic Analyzer (MESA), is presently under development by USAFA faculty and will be used to measure plasma density with its …

Use Of An Operations Simulator For Small Satellites, Sid Saraf, Chahé Adourian, Philip Melanson, Mak Tafazoli

Small Satellite Conference

The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) has initiated the Science Satellite (SCISAT) mission as part of its ongoing space science program. The SCISAT-1 satellite will be operated from CSA's mission operation centre in St- Hubert, Québec. The use of an operations simulator is critical in mitigating any mission level risk. During an anomaly situation the operation team's only line of defence against a mission failure could be the simulator. The SCISAT-1 simulator could also be an effective tool to ensure that commands or command sequences that are detrimental to the spacecraft or the science planning are not up-linked accidentally. The best …

The Use Of Hibernation Modes For Deep Space Missions As A Method To Lower Mission Operations Costs , E. Reynolds, P. Panneton, M. Reinhart, D. Mehoke, W. Dellinger, S. Williams, J. Perschy, R. Harvey, P. Carr

Small Satellite Conference

Hibernation modes have been used in the past in the commercial and military sector under the name of ‘on-orbit storage’ or ‘onorbit spare’. Satellites that have used this technique include: METEOSAT-5 (Europe). SOOS (Navy), NOVA (Navy), GOES-10 (NOAA). These spares are used to quickly restore functionality of the system if there should be an on-orbit failure. Up until now, scientific satellites have not incorporated hibernation modes in their baseline mission timeline – though several missions used them to perform extended missions: GIOTTO and ISEE- 3/ICE. During its competitive proposal phase, CONTOUR baselined a hibernation mode as a method to reduce …

Design Of A Distributed Ground Support System For Small Satellites, R.M. Barry, P.J. Bakkes Aug 2001

Design Of A Distributed Ground Support System For Small Satellites, R.M. Barry, P.J. Bakkes

Small Satellite Conference

On February 23, 1999 South Africa's first satellite SUNSAT was launched. The satellite was designed and built entirely at the University of Stellenbosch, a project spanning 8 years. Up to 1999 the bulk of the development work was done on the satellite itself, with time constraints limiting the work done on the ground support system. This led to a situation where the ground station was developed in the two months prior to the launch and shortly afterwards. The system was developed with the specific purpose of supporting only SUNSAT. The final product was a ground support system consisting of a …

There are growing opportunities for Universities to gain educational access to Space. The Naval Academy has used the Department of Defense Space Test Program for its PCsat and Sapphire projects and the Stanford Cubesat program offers a unique opportunity to get numerous small student satellite payloads into space. As a spin-off of our PCsat project, we have investigated several off-the-shelf solutions to the Telemetry, Command and control portion of small satellites that can greatly simplify small satellite and CubeSat designs. This permits students to concentrate on the various payloads and other aspects of the project without starting from scratch with …

Aquagsat – A Sun Pointing Picosatellite Powered By A Regenerative Fuel Cell, Thomas Lowery, Kyle Ottinger Aug 2001

Aquagsat – A Sun Pointing Picosatellite Powered By A Regenerative Fuel Cell, Thomas Lowery, Kyle Ottinger

Small Satellite Conference

A unique opportunity of low-cost access to space in is being offered to many educational institutions and commercial interests around the world. The Cubesat program offers launch opportunities for pico-satellites (< 1kg) which can be built for a reachable price range, thus extended the access to space out further into the publics grasp. The current cubesat projects offer up to 200 grams of payload to be for small lowearth- orbit (LEO) experiments. Along with the increasing trend in small spacecraft, alternate forms of power are being developed. Such as the unitized regenerative fuel cell (URFC). A URFC extracts the energy from the formation of H2O and utilizes it as power. The URFC has the ability to then reverse the process inputting the power necessary to break down the H2O into H2 and O2 and storing the products. Thus, applied to space applications URFC serves as a nonhazards, cheap, and infinitely renewable energy source. AquaGSat will utilize this access to lowearth- orbit (LEO) by providing a platform for a small URFC and other experiments of similar power needs. This report details the preliminary design of AquaGSat “Water EnerGy” Satellite. The AquaGSat was designed with a modular vision of being able to implement similar experimental payloads that share power and attitude control requirements. Design drivers for AquaGSat are: innovation, maximize energy per volume ratio, utilization of existing technology, and simplicity. The basic shape and composition of the external shell of the spacecraft is provided by the P-POD Payload Planners Guide. P-POD will eject its cubesat load at a certain location in orbit (600 km to 800 km). Once safely away the cubesats will activate themselves and begin their mission. To accomplish AquaGSat’s mission, it is a threeaxis stabilized sun-pointing satellite, because of its large power needs. The sections that follow consider the design and analysis that were performed. Including URFC, Mission Design, P-POD requirements, Thermal, Vibration and Structural Analysis, and Attitude Determination and Control Model and Simulation results, Power and Communications subsystems.

A Ground-Based Prototype Of A Cmos Navigational Star Camera For Small Satellite Applications , Brian Shucker Aug 2001

A Ground-Based Prototype Of A Cmos Navigational Star Camera For Small Satellite Applications , Brian Shucker

Small Satellite Conference

Small satellites are now capable of performing missions that require accurate attitude determination and control. However, low size, power, and cost requirements limit the types of attitude sensors that can be used on a small craft, making attitude estimation difficult. In particular, star trackers—often the attitude sensors of choice for larger spacecraft—are not practical for small satellites. This paper describes a miniature navigational star camera based on CMOS sensor technology that is appropriate for small satellite applications. A ground-based prototype version has been built to demonstrate the technology. Hardware design and algorithms for star-pattern recognition and attitude estimation are discussed, …

Low Thrust Trajectory Design For Crafti, Eric Morrow Aug 2001

Low Thrust Trajectory Design For Crafti, Eric Morrow

Small Satellite Conference

The Canadian Robotic Asteroid Flyby and (Tentatively) Impact project (CRAFTI) proposes to accomplish an interplanetary mission to explore an asteroid while maintaining a budget of ~US$10 million. This cost target implies a launch as a secondary payload and hence a microsatsized spacecraft. The mission objective is to send two spacecraft to encounter the near-Earth asteroid Toutatis in 2008; one of these will fly by Toutatis at close range, while the other impacts the asteroid. An electric propulsion system is being considered to provide the thrust for the orbital manoeuvres. However, the thrust level achievable by this kind of system is …

Snap-1: A Low Cost Modular Cots-Based Nano-Satellite – Design, Construction, Launch And Early Operations Phase , C. Underwood, G. Richardson, J. Savignol

Small Satellite Conference

Driven by the personal computer and personal communications markets, commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) microelectronic systems have advanced considerably in the last few years, making it now feasible to construct highly capable “nano-satellites” (i.e. sub-10 kg satellites) to provide cost-effective and rapid-response, orbiting-test-vehicles for advanced space missions and technologies. The UK’s first nano-satellite: SNAP-1 - designed and built by Surrey Space Centre (SSC) and Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) staff - is an example of such a test-vehicle, in this case, built with the primary objective of demonstrating that a sophisticated, fully agile nano-satellite can be constructed rapidly, and at very low cost, …
