Speech And Prosody Characteristics Of Adolescents And Adults With High-Functioning Autism And Asperger Syndrome, Lawrence D. Shriberg, Rhea Paul, Jane Mcsweeny, Ami Klin, Donald Cohen, Fred Volkmar
Communication Disorders Faculty Publications
Speech and prosody-voice profiles for 15 male speakers with High-Functioning Autism (HFA) and 15 male speakers with Asperger syndrome (AS) were compared to one another and to profiles for 53 typically developing male speakers in the same 10- to 50-years age range. Compared to the typically developing speakers, significantly more participants in both the HFA and AS groups had residual articulation distortion errors, uncodable utterances due to discourse constraints, and utterances coded as inappropriate in the domains of phrasing, stress, and resonance. Speakers with AS were significantly more voluble than speakers with HFA, but otherwise there were few statistically significant …
Decretal Theology And The Development Of Covenant Thought: An Assessment Of Cornelis Graafland's Thesis With A Particular View To Federal Architects William Ames And Johannes Cocceius, Jan Van Vliet
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
In this essay we first offer some general comments about Cornelis Graafland's work, leading up to and including his gloss on the covenant/predestinarian thought of key representatives of the Puritan tradition. Then comes a brief exposition of the views of John Calvin and William Ames on the relationship of these two heads of doctrine, followed by a more detailed examination of the unique theology of Johannes Cocceius. We assess the earlier (1957) groundbreaking work of Charles S. McCoy and the more contemporary (1988, 1997) scholarly investigation of Willem Jan van Asselt in order to determine whether these scholars perceive the …

Organic Vegetables : A Guide To Production, Steven Mccoy
Organic Vegetables : A Guide To Production, Steven Mccoy
Bulletins 4000 -
There appears to be considerable opportunity for the development of organic vegetable production in Western Australia for either fresh or processed product. While a number of growers are successfully producing relatively small quantities of organic vegetables for both domestic and export markets, few large scale commercial growers have sought to capitalise on this opportunity.
Consumer interest in organically grown vegetables has increased rapidly in recent years due largely to concerns relating to food safety, health and the environment. For more information on markets for organic vegetables refer to AGWEST publication “Market Prospects – Organic Carrots and other Vegetables”.

Experimental And Analytical Investigation Of A Passive Remote Electromechanical Dynamic Absorber, Todd Nichols
Experimental And Analytical Investigation Of A Passive Remote Electromechanical Dynamic Absorber, Todd Nichols
Theses
For this thesis a new concept, the Passive Remote Electromechanical Dynamic Absorber (RDA) is investigated. The current design utilizes piezoelectric elements to convert the mechanical strain energy of a parent system into electrical energy, which is fed into the RDA. The RDA similarly uses piezoelectric elements to convert the applied electrical energy into mechanical self-excitation. A lumped-system model of the coupled system is developed, accounting for the stiffness and mass of both the parent and RDA systems, along with a coupling stiffness term. Additionally, a coupled-system finite element model, developed in Ansys/multiphysics to include a three dimensional representation of the …

Beyond Counting Votes: The Political Economy Of Bush V. Gore, Michael Abramowicz, Maxwell L. Stearns
Vanderbilt Law Review
Journalists covering the 2000 presidential election controversy have had little trouble reconstructing the events of virtually every stage of the post-election process, reporting even privileged conversations among the candidates' lawyers. Yet one critical stage of the process remains shrouded in mystery: the behind-the-scenes events at the Supreme Court, which led to its decision in Bush v. Gore. Investigative reporting has produced only a few suggestive details. The Court has long insisted that it speaks through its opinions, and indeed the Court has left the public with only the Justices' statements at oral argument, and the various opinions themselves, from which …

Theses
Different platforms and browsers render text and images differently. Therefore, web designers should know how to deal with these types of media. Many web designers use the Macintosh, and the majority of the users are on the PC. This thesis project examines the visual elements of web design consisting of fonts, colors, and graphics and how they change between the PC and Mac. The two major browsers used by people to surf the web are Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator and they also cause problems with consistency. Resolution differences cause font problems. Knowing the default system resolution to specify with …
Altruism, The Prisoner's Dilemma, And The Components Of Selection, Jeffrey Fletcher, Martin Zwick
Altruism, The Prisoner's Dilemma, And The Components Of Selection, Jeffrey Fletcher, Martin Zwick
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
The n-player prisoner’s dilemma (PD) is a useful model of multilevel selection for altruistic traits. It highlights the non zero-sum interactions necessary for the evolution of altruism as well as the tension between individual and group-level selection. The parameters of the n-player PD can be directly related to the Price equation as well as to a useful alternative selection decomposition. Finally, the n-player PD emphasizes the expected equilibrium condition of mutual defection in the absence of higher levels of organization and selection. Keywords: prisoner's dilemma, N-player PD, multilevel selection, altruism, Price equation, group selection

Dissing Congress, Ruth Colker, James J. Brudney
Dissing Congress, Ruth Colker, James J. Brudney
Michigan Law Review
The Supreme Court under Chief Justice Rehnquist's recent leadership has invalidated numerous federal laws, arguably departing from settled precedent to do so. The Rehnquist Court has held that Congress exceeded its constitutional authority in five instances during the 2000-01 Term, on four occasions during the 1999-2000 Term and in a total of twenty-nine cases since the 1994-95 Term. Commentators typically explain these decisions in federalism terms, focusing on the Court's use of its power to protect the States from an overreaching Congress. That explanation is incomplete and, in important respects, unpersuasive. The Rehnquist Court has not been as solicitous of …

When Constitutional Worlds Colide: Resurrecting The Framers' Bill Of Rights And Criminal Procedure, George C. Thomas Iii
Michigan Law Review
For two hundred years, the Supreme Court has been interpreting the Bill of Rights. Imagine Chief Justice John Marshall sitting in the dim, narrow Supreme Court chambers, pondering the interpretation of the Sixth Amendment right to compulsory process in United States v. Burr. Aaron Burr was charged with treason for planning to invade the Louisiana Territory and create a separate government there. To help prepare his defense, Burr wanted to see a letter written by General James Wilkinson to President Jefferson. In ruling on Burr's motion to compel disclosure, Marshall departed from the literal language of the Sixth Amendment - …

Toward A Motivating Factor Test For Individual Disparate Treatment Claims, Benjamin C. Mizer
Michigan Law Review
Nathan Fields, an African-American employee at the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities ("OMRDD"), was in many ways the typical Title VIP employment discrimination plaintiff, with a case that, on its face, suggested both discriminatory and benign actions by his employer. For six years, Fields worked as a maintenance assistant in the electrical shop at OMRDD's Oswald D. Heck Developmental Center ("Heck"). During that time, he twice applied for a promotion, and on each occasion, Heck selected white employees for the position. In addition, Fields claimed that he was discriminatorily singled out for disciplinary treatment, that …

Decline Of The Red-Winged Blackbird Population In Ohio Correlated To Changes In Agriculture (1965-1996), Bradley F. Blackwell, Richard A. Dolbeer
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Based on North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) data since 1966, Ohio has traditionally hosted 1 of the highest breeding season densities of red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) of any U.S. state or Canadian province. However, from 1966 through 1996, breeding populations of red-winged blackbirds in Ohio showed a marked decline (x̅ % change/yr in birds per route = -3.9), with breeding population indices decreasing by over 53%. Because the red-winged blackbird successfully adapted to habitats created by agricultural expansion over the last century and became a recognized pest of crops such as corn (Zea mays), …

Guarding The Sacred Fires: Elizabeth E. Farrell's Contributions To The Creation Of Special Education In New York City, Kimberly E. Kode
Dissertations (1934 -)
The department Farrell founded became a model for those that followed, causing a ripple effect in the practice of teaching and the organization of school systems across the United States. Further, Farrell's involvement in professional organizations such as the Council for Exceptional Children and the New York State Psychological Association established the basis for a special education professional network, still in existence---and thriving-- today. Although a few short biographical pieces on Farrell are available, and she is referenced in numerous journal articles in the area of special education history, there has been no detailed account of Farrell's life and accomplishments. …
