Using Online Learning Resources To Promote Deeper Learning, Roger Bruning, Arthur I. Zygielbaum, Neal Grandgenett
Using Online Learning Resources To Promote Deeper Learning, Roger Bruning, Arthur I. Zygielbaum, Neal Grandgenett
Teacher Education Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
This paper describes research on four web-based learning applications that employ a variety of assessment approaches and student tracking and data aggregation mechanisms. These applications are aimed at promoting deeper learning in web-based learning applications and courses and at facilitating a research-based, design experiment approach to prototype development and improvement. Developmental research on two of these tools, Affinity Learning and Critical Thinking, is discussed in this paper. Affinity Learning uses database-driven software to capture the teaching skill of a master teacher. Students are guided through online activities and assessments in accord with their skills and rate of learning. When a …

Kosovo Myths: Karadzic, Njegos, And The Transformation Of Serb Memory, Alexander K.A. Greenawalt
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
This brief sketch of the Kosovo myth and its legacy allows one to see how the legend has played such a central role in the popular imagination of the Balkans. In its broader implications, the myth has figured in the debate concerning the origins of national identity. Observing that "the Kosovo battle became an ineradicable part of Serbian history immediately after 1389” and "inspired the greatest cycle of Serbian epic poetry, which was full of hope for the final victory and deliverance,” Aleksa Djilas has thereby argued that "the nineteenth century only revolutionized national identities already formed by language, culture, …

Principles And Poetry, Places And Stories: The Resources Of Buddhist Ecology, Donald K. Swearer
Religion Faculty Works
Swearer includes in his discussion of Buddhist ecology not only particular texts, philosophical ideas, and practices that Buddhists marshal in defense of an environmental ethic, but also hermeneutical and tactical strategies that Buddhists employ as well. He wants to ensure that the religious dimensions of global environmental issues really do have an impact on decision-making.

Maritime Access: Do Defenders Hold All The Cards?, Arthur H. Barber Iii, Delwyn L. Gilmore
Defense Horizons
National security strategy depends on sustaining access to world markets for American commerce in peacetime and for the Armed Forces to various parts of the globe in times of crisis or war. Potential nation-state adversaries understand the importance of this access and are devising strategies and investing in systems to delay, discredit, or deny U.S. entry to those regions of vital interest where they wish to become the dominant power. Most of these regions are adjacent to international waters where American naval forces freely operate today.
Naval forces provide a valuable degree of sovereign and secure access in a strategic …

The Invisible Can Or, Gendering Corporate Globalization Trouble: Technological Utopianism And The Language Of Erasure, Marleen S. Barr
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
I turn to Judith Butler to clarify my term corporate globalization trouble as well as to explain why this trouble should be situated in gendered terms regarding power, visibility, and subjectivity inequities. [1] Butler describes deviant gender identities failing to coincide with the matrix of intelligibility: precisely because certain kinds of 'gender identities' fail to conform to those norms of cultural intelligibility, they appear only as developmental failures or logical impossibilities from within that domain. Their persistence and proliferation, however, provide critical opportunities to expose the limits and regulatory aims of that domain of intelligibility and, …
A Very Low Bit-Rate Speech Recognition System, Matthew Baecher
A Very Low Bit-Rate Speech Recognition System, Matthew Baecher
Theses
When using extracted speech feature coefficients for speech synthesis, quantization is considered a lossy compression scheme. The data being compressed cannot be recovered or reconstructed exactly. However, in a speech recognition system for command and control purposes, a certain amount of quantization can be allowed, with comparable results. In some cases, quantization even serves to "close the gaps" between the coefficients of the incoming speech signal and those of the templates. Since the coefficients are not being used to reconstruct the signal, a very coarse quantization can be used, enabling a very low bit-rate transmission with very good recognition results. …

The Moderating Role Of Trust On The Relationship Between Ingratiatory Communication Strategies And Interactional Fairness, Erik Drafsten
The Moderating Role Of Trust On The Relationship Between Ingratiatory Communication Strategies And Interactional Fairness, Erik Drafsten
Student Work
Previous research has shown that when perceptions of both procedural justice and distributive justice are low, increasing perceptions of interactional fairness can serve to reduce negative consequences that an organization may face, including subtle forms of retaliation, or what are known as organizational retaliatory behaviors (ORB). In an organizational setting personal attempts to improve perceptions of interactional fairness, under conditions of low distributive and procedural justice, can take on ingratiatory-like qualities when the source attempting to boost these perceptions of interactional fairness uses flattery, expresses excessive empathy, or excessive sympathy. Research has shown that ingratiatory actions such as these become …
