Murine Monoclonal Antibodies Against Escherichia Coli O4 Lipopolysaccharide And H5 Flagellin, Mildred Rivera-Betancourt, James E. Keen Sep 2001

Murine Monoclonal Antibodies Against Escherichia Coli O4 Lipopolysaccharide And H5 Flagellin, Mildred Rivera-Betancourt, James E. Keen

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Two murine monoclonal antibodies (MAb), 2C5-F10 and 8D1-H10, reactive with Escherichia coli O4 and H5 antigens, respectively, were generated and characterized. Enzyme immunoassays and immunoblots demonstrated that MAb 2C5-F10 reacted specifically with lipopolysaccharide O antigen of E. coli O4 isolates, while MAb 8D1-H10 reacted with E. coli strains expressing H5 flagella.

About Art, Baruch Blich Sep 2001

About Art, Baruch Blich

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "About Art," Baruch Blich investigates why is art -- and especially modern art -- so difficult to understand? Why do art objects raise questions as to their status? Why scrutinizing art involves semiotics, philosophy of language, linguistics, epistemology, ontology, and even metaphysics? Why art is interpreted by psychoanalysis as well as by behaviorism and psychology of perception? What anthropology and sociology have to do with art and why do we witness art debated in the courtroom concerning copyright issues? In short -- what makes art a crossroad for many and sometimes conflicting disciplines? Is there something in …

A Framework For Non-Governmental Organisations In International Diplomacy, Frank Vibert Sep 2001

A Framework For Non-Governmental Organisations In International Diplomacy, Frank Vibert

Chicago Journal of International Law

This comment on the role of Non-Governmental Organisations ("NGOs") in international relations is divided into two parts. First, it addresses the main theme of Kenneth Anderson's paper, and second, it looks at European attitudes on the subject.

Contextual Determinism And Foreign Relations Federalism, Peter J. Spiro Sep 2001

Contextual Determinism And Foreign Relations Federalism, Peter J. Spiro

Chicago Journal of International Law

No doubt we are today trolling murky waters in matters involving the intersection of the domestic constitutional order and the global system. By way of evidence for the proposition, foreign relations law must now be counted among the hottest topics in the legal academy. The top law reviews in recent years have included many contributions in the area; indeed, one might venture that there have been more articles on foreign relations law subjects in the past five years than in the preceding twenty-five. Issues relating to the treaty power, the status of international law in our constitutional order, the role …

Free Trade, Sovereignty, Democracy: The Future Of The World Trade Organization, Claude E. Barfield Sep 2001

Free Trade, Sovereignty, Democracy: The Future Of The World Trade Organization, Claude E. Barfield

Chicago Journal of International Law

The World Trade Organization ("WTO"), only six years old, faces two formidable challenges. First, it must mobilize support to confront determined and growing attacks from outside groups and individuals who proclaim that the organization lacks democratic accountability and is merely a front for multinational corporations and dehumanizing capitalist values. Second, even as it attempts to mobilize its resources to meet these onslaughts, the WTO finds its own institutional viability jeopardized by internal constitutional flaws that play into the hands of opponents: namely, the pressure to "legislate" new rules-through a highly efficient new dispute settlement system-that flout the mandate that dispute …

Toward A Strategy Of Positive Ends, Antulio J. Echevarria Dr., Huba Wass De Czege Brigadier General (Ret.) Sep 2001

Toward A Strategy Of Positive Ends, Antulio J. Echevarria Dr., Huba Wass De Czege Brigadier General (Ret.)

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Brigadier General (Retired) Huba Wass de Czege and Lieutenant Colonel Antulio J. Echevarria II make a case for a strategy aimed at achieving positive, rather than neutral or negative, ends. They first discuss the dynamic conditions of the new strategic environment, then explore the options the United States has available for dealing with those conditions. The options include (1) preventive defense, (2) neo-isolationism, and (3) a strategy that pursues positive ends. Only the last, the authors argue, deals with the new security environment in a proactive way. It enables the United States to define its vital interests in terms of …

Preparing For Asymmetry: As Seen Through The Lens Of Joint Vision 2020, Melissa Applegate Ms.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Since the mid-1990s, the concept of strategic asymmetry has begun to receive serious attention from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). The 1997 Quadrennial Defense Review, for instance, stated, "U.S. dominance in the conventional military arena may encourage adversaries to use…asymmetric means to attack our forces and interests overseas and Americans at home." But while American strategists and defense leaders sense the importance of strategy asymmetry, much analytical work remains to be done before it is fully understood. The author assesses the revisions to Joint Vision 2020, DOD's roadmap to the future, that must be undertaken in order to prepare …

Physical Activity Profile Of Adult Males In Riyadh City, Saeed A. Al-Rafaee, Hazzaa M. Al-Hazzaa

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To assess the patterns and determinants of physical activity among Saudi adult males living in Riyadh. METHODS: Self-administered questionnaires were filled out by 1333 randomly selected Saudi males 19 years and older, during the Fall of 1996. RESULTS: Over 53% of Saudi males were totally physically inactive, and another 27.5% were irregularly active. Only 19% of the entire sample were active on a regular basis. A curvilinear relationship was found between age and inactivity, with the middle age group the least active. Physical activity was lower among those who were married, work in the private sectors, working 2 shifts, …

The Influence Of Postevent Credibility In The Report Of Eyewitnessed Events, Shelly Wolesky, Gloria Marmolejo Sep 2001

The Influence Of Postevent Credibility In The Report Of Eyewitnessed Events, Shelly Wolesky, Gloria Marmolejo

Modern Psychological Studies

Previous research dealing with the effects of source credibility on eyewitness' memories has found that sources that are seen as credible by the eyewitness' are more likely to be believed and more often change the witness' original memory than do sources seen as not credible. The present experiment is an extension of the previous research testing if adults that witness an event are affected differently by the misinformation presented by a child (non credible source) or an adult (credible source). Fifty-two people were shown a video depicting a scene of a husband and a wife arguing in their home. They …

A New Approach To Clustering Biological Data Using Message Passing., Huimin Geng Sep 2001

A New Approach To Clustering Biological Data Using Message Passing., Huimin Geng

Student Work

Motivation: Clustering algorithms are widely used m bioinformatics, having been applied to a range of problems from the analysis of gene expression to the building of phylogenetic trees. Biological data often describe parallel and spontaneous processes such as molecular interactions and genome evolution. To capture these features, we propose a new clustering algorithm that employs the concept of message passing. Methods: Inspired by a real-world situation in which people who have never met can form groups by exchanging messages, Message Passing Clustering (MPC) allows data objects to communicate with each other and produces clusters in parallel, thereby making the clustering …
