Need To Update Your Information Technology? Try Service Learning, Robin A. Alexander Sep 2001

Need To Update Your Information Technology? Try Service Learning, Robin A. Alexander

Partnerships/Community

While the need for information in the nonprofit sector is great, shortages of time, staff, money, and expertise make it hard to use information technology effectively. The result is often a vicious cycle in which staff time is spent compiling information manually when a simple database could dramatically speed the process. But there's no time to create it.

Catholic School Lay Principalship: The Neglected Ministry In Church Documents On Catholic Education ” An Australian Perspective, Paul J. Hansen Sep 2001

Catholic School Lay Principalship: The Neglected Ministry In Church Documents On Catholic Education ” An Australian Perspective, Paul J. Hansen

Journal of Catholic Education

The decline in religious in Australia in the 35 years since the end of the Second Vatican Council has brought an associated withdrawal of religious from the staffs and governance of Catholic schools. Lay women and men have replaced religious principals, but the principalship has not changed sufficiently to accommodate the new life realities of lay people in that role. This article argues that there has been an emerging recognition in Church documents on Catholic education of Catholic education as a ministry of the laity, but such documents are largely silent about the role, ministry, and vocation of lay principals …

Affirmative Action: An Analysis Of Aa/Eeo Officers' Perceptions Of Campus Policies In The University Of Missouri System, Shawn Woodhouse

The Qualitative Report

This study sought to explore the perceptions of affirmative action officers in the University of Missouri System. Each affirmative action officer on the four University of Missouri campuses participated in an electronic or personal interview in which they responded to eight questions regarding the implementation of affirmative action policies on their respective campuses. A Qualitative Investigation Into Developmental Relationships For Small Business Apparel Retailers: Networks, Mentors And Role Models, Luann R. Gaskill

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this investigation was to gain an understanding of the use, function, and support dimensions of developmental relationships for small business apparel retailers by applying focus group data collection techniques and interpretive analysis. Data collection took place through eight focus groups with small business owners/managers in six mid-western communities. Results indicate that, indeed, networks, role models, and mentors are viewed as necessary and important mechanisms for information, support, and guidance. However, focus group participants noted a lack of access to such developmental relationships. In terms of functions performed, having a business colleague to confide in, and relate to, …

Call For Proactivity: A Well-Directed Monetary Policy And A Stable Rupee Have Certainly Won Whiz-Kid Dr. Ishrat Husain Many Fans. Is The Banking Community Amongst Them?, Sanaa Ahmed

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

Dr. Husain is definitely trying his best to win them over with his 'friends, not masters' policy. Not only that, he has established a consistent consultative regime whereby bankers are invariably consulted before major policy decisions are taken. At the same time, he stubbornly refuses to micro-manage them on a day to day basis. So the bankers should be very happy, right? Well, not entirely.

A Transaction Model To Improve Data Availability In Mobile Computing, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Bharat Bhargava Sep 2001

A Transaction Model To Improve Data Availability In Mobile Computing, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Bharat Bhargava

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

We incorporate a prewrite operation before a write operation in a mobile transaction to improve data availability. A prewrite operation does not update the state of a data object but only makes visible the future value that the data object will have after the final commit of the transaction. Once a transaction reads all the values and declares all the prewrites, it can pre-commit at mobile host (MH) (computer connected to unreliable mobile communication network). The remaining transaction's execution (writes on database) is shifted to the mobile service station (MSS) (computer connected to the reliable fixed network). Writes on database …

This report summarizes the effort to provide the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet with an evaluation of the results obtained for the Paris to Lexington Road Reconstruction Project from 1997 to 2001. A unique pre-qualification process was used for the project to select a fixed pool of contractor to provide input to the design and to bid on the work. The research started in 1996 during the design process and continued following construction until September of 2001.

Input was received from the Cabinet personnel working on the project, from the design firms, from the contractors, from the property owners involved, and from …

Identification Of An Mcm4 Homologue Expressed Specifically In The Sexual Stage Of Plasmodium Falciparum, J-L Li, Ls Cox Sep 2001

Identification Of An Mcm4 Homologue Expressed Specifically In The Sexual Stage Of Plasmodium Falciparum, J-L Li, Ls Cox

School of Biomedical Sciences

Mini-chromosome maintenance (MCM) proteins play an essential role in DNA replication initiation. We have isolated a novel gene encoding an MCM-like protein from the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum using the vectorette technique. The gene has no introns and comprises an open reading frame encoding 1005 amino acid residues with a predicted Mr of 115 kDa. The encoded protein, termed PfMCM4, contains all conserved sequences in the MCM family and displays the highest homology to the Cdc54 (MCM4) of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. However, PfMCM4 possesses five unique amino acid inserts with sizes ranging from seven to 75 residues. Southern blotting of …
