The Other Side Of The Desk: Former Welfare Recipients Who Now Work For "The System.", Cheryl Cheek, Kathleen W. Piercy Sep 2001

The Other Side Of The Desk: Former Welfare Recipients Who Now Work For "The System.", Cheryl Cheek, Kathleen W. Piercy

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Within the framework of identity theory, twenty female former welfare recipients who are currently human service workers discussed how their past experiences affected current service provision and their views of the welfare system. Semi-structured interviews were used, and data were coded and analyzed using the multistage process designed by McCracken (1988) for long interviews. Respondents discussed how their experiences made them more empathetic towards their clients and gave them insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the past and present welfare systems. Results show support for identity theory by showing how past identities affect present ones.

The Ins And Outs Of Welfare-To-Work: Women As They Enter And Exit A Nursing Assistant Employment And Training Program, Brenda Solomon Sep 2001

The Ins And Outs Of Welfare-To-Work: Women As They Enter And Exit A Nursing Assistant Employment And Training Program, Brenda Solomon

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

By participant observation and follow up interviews (at three intervals post-graduation), this study explores the multiple work accountabilities arranging women's everyday lives as they enter and exit a welfare-to-work nursing assistant employment and training program. Work and family demands, and male partners' and children's reactions to the women's participation in labor arrangements outside the home are complicated by children's chronic illnesses and partners' disabilities and unemployment situations. From this consideration, the author argues that there is an incomplete gender shift in welfare policy. While it creates clear obligations to family and work for women trainees, the policy produces uncertain consequences …

A Psychographic Analysis Of Generation Y College Students, Joyce M. Wolburg, James Pokrywczynski

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Generation Y is regarded as the elusive new youth market, whose members are as resistant to advertising efforts as were members of Generation X before them. To investigate various factors that influence the use of advertising among the college segment of Generation Y, a survey was administered to a random sample of 368 college students. Questions probed self-identity, relevance of depictions in the media, and the informational value of advertising across eight media. Results show that gender and a variety of personality traits such as introversion/extroversion affect both the perceived value of advertising as an information source and the relevance …

The Progress Of Computing, William D. Nordhaus Sep 2001

The Progress Of Computing, William D. Nordhaus

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The present study analyzes computer performance over the last century and a half. Three results stand out. First, there has been a phenomenal increase in computer power over the twentieth century. Performance in constant dollars or in terms of labor units has improved since 1900 by a factor in the order of 1 trillion to 5 trillion, which represent compound growth rates of over 30 percent per year for a century. Second, there were relatively small improvements in efficiency (perhaps a factor of ten) in the century before World War II. Around World War II, however, there was a substantial …

Resurrecting Transformation For The Post-Industrial Era, Douglas A. Macgregor Sep 2001

Resurrecting Transformation For The Post-Industrial Era, Douglas A. Macgregor

Defense Horizons

We must hold our minds alert and receptive to the application of unglimpsed methods and weapons. The next war will be won in the future, not in the past. We must go on, or we will go under.

—General of the Army Douglas A. MacArthur, while serving as Chief of Staff, 1931

The Bush administration took office amid high hopes for the fundamental transformation of the Armed Forces. Yet within months, the problem that transformation was designed to solve—changing a large, expensive Industrial Age structure, especially the Army, into a leaner, more strategically agile Information Age force—receded as more pressing …

Germs Or Rations? Beriberi And The Japanese Labor Experiment In Colonial Fiji And Queensland, Judith A. Bennett Sep 2001

Germs Or Rations? Beriberi And The Japanese Labor Experiment In Colonial Fiji And Queensland, Judith A. Bennett

Pacific Studies

In the early 1890s, the Colonial Sugar Refinery Company (CSR) introduced Japanese men to their sugar plantations in Fiji and Queensland because man- agement believed they would prove to be superior workers to other “coloured” labor. In Fiji, an outbreak of beriberi killed many of the Japanese. The medical establishment attributed this to an infective agent, instead of diet, so there was fear the disease could spread. CSR quickly abandoned the costly “experiment” in Fiji. In Queensland, however, the company successfully controlled a beriberi outbreak by altering the rations, though for fear of contaminated food rather than for balanced diet. …

Watt's Going On?: Illuminating New York's Electric Generation Siting Process, John A. Poakeart

Pace Environmental Law Review

Article X was added to New York State's Public Service Law in response to the state's transition from a regulated electricity industry to a deregulated market. Article X's purpose is largely to expedite the power plant siting process, in the interest of getting increased power to market as quickly as possible to meet ever-increasing power demand. The vehicle for this process is the Board on Electric Generation Siting and the Environment, which was created under Article X. This Board is comprised of members of various State agencies and serves as a "one-stop" entity that reviews new power plant siting applications. …

The Impact Of Communication Medium And Outcome Severity On The Effectiveness Of Social Accounts, Peter D. Timmerman Sep 2001

The Impact Of Communication Medium And Outcome Severity On The Effectiveness Of Social Accounts, Peter D. Timmerman

Student Work

The present study was designed as a partial test of the model of social accounts by Folger and Cropanzano (1998). Organizational justice researchers have shown that social accounts are effective in reducing negative reactions and displacing blame from the decision-maker following a harmful decision. Using a 2 x 3 completely randomized design, the study examined the effects of outcome severity and media choice on four types of fairness perceptions, medium appropriateness, anger, and turnover intentions. A temporary pay cut scenario was used to manipulate two levels of outcome severity, and the company president provided an explanation of the pay cut …

Murine Monoclonal Antibodies Against Escherichia Coli O4 Lipopolysaccharide And H5 Flagellin, Mildred Rivera-Betancourt, James E. Keen Sep 2001

Murine Monoclonal Antibodies Against Escherichia Coli O4 Lipopolysaccharide And H5 Flagellin, Mildred Rivera-Betancourt, James E. Keen

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Two murine monoclonal antibodies (MAb), 2C5-F10 and 8D1-H10, reactive with Escherichia coli O4 and H5 antigens, respectively, were generated and characterized. Enzyme immunoassays and immunoblots demonstrated that MAb 2C5-F10 reacted specifically with lipopolysaccharide O antigen of E. coli O4 isolates, while MAb 8D1-H10 reacted with E. coli strains expressing H5 flagella.

About Art, Baruch Blich Sep 2001

About Art, Baruch Blich

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "About Art," Baruch Blich investigates why is art -- and especially modern art -- so difficult to understand? Why do art objects raise questions as to their status? Why scrutinizing art involves semiotics, philosophy of language, linguistics, epistemology, ontology, and even metaphysics? Why art is interpreted by psychoanalysis as well as by behaviorism and psychology of perception? What anthropology and sociology have to do with art and why do we witness art debated in the courtroom concerning copyright issues? In short -- what makes art a crossroad for many and sometimes conflicting disciplines? Is there something in …
