A Study Of The Relationship Between Participating In School -To -Work Activities And School Outcomes., Jill Layne Hopkins

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between secondary schools' participation in school-to-work activities and a given school's attendance rate, dropout rate, graduation rate, college going rate, and achievement test results as perceived by the school principal and measured by the School-to-Work Perceptual Inventory. The population of the study consisted of principals of schools in the United States with a grade configuration of 9–12 (N = 11,529) (Market Data Retrieval, personal communication, April 3, 2001). The sample consisted of 400 principals selected at random by Market Data Retrieval (n = 400). Overall, 214 (53.5%) surveys were returned. …

Controllability And Anxious Responding: Experimental Evaluation Using 20% Carbon Dioxide-Enriched Air., Michael J. Zvolensky Jan 2001

Controllability And Anxious Responding: Experimental Evaluation Using 20% Carbon Dioxide-Enriched Air., Michael J. Zvolensky

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Although emotional control maintains a central role in contemporary models of anxiety pathology, particularly panic disorder, there is little understanding about the ways in which specific control processes alter anxiety-related responding. In the present study, offset control over eight 20% carbon dioxide-enriched air administrations was experimentally manipulated in a large nonclinical population (n = 96) varying in anxiety sensitivity (high or low) and gender. Dependent measures included self-reported anxiety, affective reports of valence, arousal, emotional control, and physiological indices of heart rate and skin conductance. High anxiety sensitive participants who lacked offset control reported significantly greater elevations in self-reported anxiety, …

Departure: A Novella And Other Stories., William Matthew Carter Jan 2001

Departure: A Novella And Other Stories., William Matthew Carter

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Departure: A Novella and Other Stories is my master’s thesis written during the fall semester of 2000. The novella and two of the stories are original works created during this time. The remaining stories were written during various fiction workshops. The stories and novella all deal with individuals coming to the precipice of a major experience in their lives. My work deals with the psychological or worldly concerns these characters must ponder in deciding whether to withdraw, act, or leap from their precipice. Some themes I explore in this work as a whole include addictions, homelessness, death, and physical, mental, …

An Actor's Process Of Performing The Duke Of Buckingham In William Shakespeare's "Richard Iii"., Sean T. Cercone Jan 2001

An Actor's Process Of Performing The Duke Of Buckingham In William Shakespeare's "Richard Iii"., Sean T. Cercone

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis traces an actor’s journey of their craft throughout the process of William Shakespeare’s Richard III. The thesis begins with the manner by which the actor researches the play. The research informs the actor’s choice as to what character he/she will audition for. It then traces the audition preparation and the casting. The research is then reviewed and revised based on the casting of the play. The actor then creates a character biography in order to understand the complete set of given circumstances surrounding their character. The text analysis assists the actor in discovering information about the character specifically …

The Relationship Of Interviewer's Communication Behaviors And Applicant's Evaluation Of The Interviewer., Seft George Hunter

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The present study sought to explain the nature of the relationship between interviewers’ communication behavior (willingness to communicate, self-perceived communication competence, and socio-communicative style) and applicants’ perception of credibility (competence, trustworthiness, and goodwill), general attitude toward the interviewer and belief that the interviewer should continue interviewing for her/his company. Results indicated that: (1) there was a significant positive relationship between perceived WTC, competence, goodwill, trustworthiness, general attitude toward the interviewer, and belief that the interviewer should continue interviewing for her/his organization; (2) perceived communication competence was positively correlated with competence, goodwill, trustworthiness, general attitude toward the interviewer, and belief that …

An Analysis Of Service Sector Growth Effects On Income Inequality A Comparison Model Of Metropolitan And Non-Metropolitan Areas Of The Appalachia., Cheryl Lynne Peskar-Johnson Jan 2001

An Analysis Of Service Sector Growth Effects On Income Inequality A Comparison Model Of Metropolitan And Non-Metropolitan Areas Of The Appalachia., Cheryl Lynne Peskar-Johnson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

It is very difficult to find regional economic restructuring studies that examine economic well-being by analyzing the effects of service sector growth on income inequality. This study is a regional economic restructuring analysis. Through the use of county level data of 399 Appalachian Counties this study produced a comparison model of metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas. The main goal of my thesis was to evaluate the growing economic differences in income potentials that have resulted in new spatial inequalities in the United States. By regressing income inequality (GINI INDEX) against service sector growth this study was able to support earlier studies …

Mechanotransduction In Bone: Passive And Load-Induced Fluid Transport In Rat Femora., Bixia Li Jan 2001

Mechanotransduction In Bone: Passive And Load-Induced Fluid Transport In Rat Femora., Bixia Li

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The capacity of bone tissue to alter its mass and structure in response to mechanical demands has long been recognized but the mechanisms involved remained poorly understood. Load-induced interstitial fluid flow has been postulated to provide a mechanism for transduction of the mechanical signals to the cellular level to activate bone adaptation. This research is to investigate experimentally the effects of mechanical loading on fluid flow in bone by introducing stain/tracer. Rat femurs were used to test the passive diffusion and mechanical transport properties of the stain in bone. It was found that fluorescein is compatible with an animal model …

The Relation Of Anxiety Sensitivity And Coping Strategy To Carbon Dioxide-Induced Anxious And Fearful Responding., Adam Peter Spira Jan 2001

The Relation Of Anxiety Sensitivity And Coping Strategy To Carbon Dioxide-Induced Anxious And Fearful Responding., Adam Peter Spira

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The present study examined hypotheses regarding the relations among anxiety sensitivity (AS), coping strategy, and anxious responding to a 10-minute inhalation of 10% CO2-enriched air. Elevated scores on several subscales of the Anxiety Sensitivity Index - Revised (ASI-R) predicted CO2-induced panic symptoms. In addition, avoidant coping strategies were predictive of CO2-induced anxious and fearful responding. A composite of subscales from the COPE Inventory predicted aspects of challenge-induced anxiety that were not predicted by the ASI. Although results support contemporary models of panic disorder, our findings also indicate that AS may not be as important to the development and maintenance of …

"Playing To The Cameras": The Presence Of An Entertainment Perspective In Political Panel Programming And The Implications Of Making Politics Palatable And Appealing., Marcus Edward Snyder Jan 2001

"Playing To The Cameras": The Presence Of An Entertainment Perspective In Political Panel Programming And The Implications Of Making Politics Palatable And Appealing., Marcus Edward Snyder

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The proliferation of political television talk shows as a modern media form appears to have had a profound influence on the dimensions and depth of public discourse. While the majority of these public affairs programs position themselves as forums for the serious discussion of consequential events and ideas, many media critics have suggested that these programs have diminished the quality of the national political dialogue by presenting and interpreting information according to television’s penchant for drama and amusement. Although public affairs programs have been the target of much criticism, their has been little academic exploration of the ways which these …

A Prototype Automatic Dental Identification System (Adis)., Diaa Eldin Mohamed Nassar Jan 2001

A Prototype Automatic Dental Identification System (Adis)., Diaa Eldin Mohamed Nassar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this work we apply combined digital image processing and artificial neural network techniques in developing a prototype of an automatic dental identification system (ADIS) to be employed for postmortem forensic identification. The prototype ADIS follows a pyramidal image-matching architecture used in developing an analogous fingerprint comparison system. Owing to the differences in image natures, we used new techniques and modified some mathematical models. We introduce an adaptive technique for dental radiograph enhancement and an adaptive strategic searching technique for neural network training. The training and testing results we obtained are promising.

Manufacturing Security: Mass Media Coverage Of Depleted Uranium Weapon Use In Okinawa, Japan., Yoko Abe

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Despite the reversion of Okinawa to Japan in 1972, thirty-eight U.S. military bases still remain in the prefecture. While the local residents’ entreaties to end their suffering from the consequences of the U.S. military presence remain strong, the U.S. and Japanese governments have adopted measures to maintain the U.S. military foothold. This study examined the viewpoints of six claimsmakers to illustrate an overlooked political process in the perpetuation of the U.S. military presence. The research applied a content analysis of newspaper articles appearing in the Okinawa Times following the disclosure of the U.S. Marine Corps’ use of depleted uranium weapons. …

An Evaluation Of The Orientation Program For Newly Appointed Catholic Primary Principals, Samuel G. Fontaine

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The structure and operation of Catholic schools in Western Australia have been in a process of change since the early 1970’s. Prior to 1971, most Catholic primary schools were administered by religious orders and much of the religious character of the school reflected the charisma of the particular religious order that operated the school. In the Year 2000 most Catholic primary schools former part of a state-wide system in which the Catholic Education Office (CEO) plays a major administrative and co-ordinating role.

Internet Content Control In Australia : Data Topology, Topography And The Data Deficit, David Harte Jan 2001

Internet Content Control In Australia : Data Topology, Topography And The Data Deficit, David Harte

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The success of the online adult industry has provoked a public policy controversy over the need for internet censorship, and in recent times there has emerged desire to protect minors from possibly unsuitable content. On January 1st 2000, the Broadcasting Services Amendment (Online Services) Act (Cwlth, 1999) (BSA) was proclaimed. The Act purports to regulate and control Internet content in Australia. Operating in tandem with the Act is the Internet Industry Association Code of Practice, giving Australia a co-regulatory approach to Internet content control. The Australian Broadcasting Authority (ABA) is charged with implementing the regime. This study sets out examine …

A review of the literature on reading and principals' reading instructional leadership indicates that nationally there is a crisis in middle level reading (grades, 5, 6, 7, 8, & 9). This study focused on the reading instructional leadership of Middle Childhood Level principals in West Virginia. Principals in West Virginia are held legally responsible for the academic achievement of their schools and thus, are charged with instructional leadership and assuring that “best practices” are used in their schools. This study attempted to identify the beliefs, experiences, demographic criteria, and best practices that principals believe have impacted SAT9 test scores at …

Beyond Pain Management: A Primer For Providing Quality End-Of-Life Care, Linda P. Tomko, Terri L. Maxwell Jan 2001

Beyond Pain Management: A Primer For Providing Quality End-Of-Life Care, Linda P. Tomko, Terri L. Maxwell

Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Papers

Providing excellent care for a dying patient is something all patients deserve. Hospices and palliative care centers exist in many areas to aid primary care physicians and patients through this difficult time. It is important to remember that most patients want to prepare for death, if at all possible. Everyone does this in his or her own way, but oftentimes concern about pain and symptom management interfere with this very involved and valuable process. Being prepared to treat these symptoms as well as addressing your patient's emotional needs is imperative. Referral to a hospice, if possible, will only strengthen the …

Practice In The Electronic Community, Roger A. Lohmann, John Mcnutt Jan 2001

Practice In The Electronic Community, Roger A. Lohmann, John Mcnutt

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The Internet was at its inception a commons rather than a marketplace. Increasingly, however, communitarian notions have been overwhelmed by the internet as one huge shopping arcade. The potential is certainly there for this amazing technology to advance the causes of human freedom well-being and community. At the same time, however, this powerful set of technologies that in less than a decade have become nearly universal in scope and sweep, have the potential also to become simply another extension of the global economic marketplace. Far worse, there is also the potential to become a power tool for class domination or …

A Comparison Of Student Performance In New Testament Exegesis With And Without Hermeneutics As A Pre-Requisite, Brendan Roach

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The problem under investigation was that the academic performance of several students in a new course offered at Harvest Bible College called New Testament Exegesis was unsatisfactory. The purpose of the study was to compare student performance in New Testament Exegesis between students who had completed Hermeneutics before commencing the course with those 2 who had not. The research question was, "Do students who take Hermeneutics as a pre-requisite course for New Testament Exegesis have an improved academic performance over students who do not have the pre-requisite?"

A quasi-experimental research design was used to determine the effect of a treatment. …

On Marczewski-Burstin Representations Of Certain Algebras Of Sets, Krzysztof Ciesielski Jan 2001

On Marczewski-Burstin Representations Of Certain Algebras Of Sets, Krzysztof Ciesielski

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

We show that the Generalized Continuum Hypothesis GCH (its appropriate part) implies that many natural algebras on R, including the algebra B of Borel sets and the interval algebra S, are outer Marczewski-Burstin representable by families of non-Borel sets. Also we construct, assuming again an appropriate part of GCH, that there are algebras on R which are not MB-representable. We prove that some algebras (including B and S) are not inner MB-representable. We give examples of algebras which are inner and outer MB-representable, or are inner but not outer MB-representable.
