Ten Years Of Basic Law Amendments: Developing A Constitutional Model Of German Unification, Mathew W. Pile Jan 2001

Ten Years Of Basic Law Amendments: Developing A Constitutional Model Of German Unification, Mathew W. Pile

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

On October 3, 1990, West and East Germany officially united. Although several unification methods were possible, the unification occurred by East Germany acceding to the West German Constitution--the Basic Law--through a series of treaties. This "treaty route" to unification necessarily required amendments to the Basic Law.

The primary unification instrument, the Treaty on the Establishment of German Unity, detailed the Basic Law amendments that were immediately essential to effectuating unification. The treaty, however, also contemplated additional Basic Law amendments arising from the consequences of unification. In fact, in the ten years following German unification, the German legislature passed six Basic …

Expression And Induction Of Three Family 4 Cytochrome P450 (Cyp4)* Genes Identified From Insecticide-Resistant And Susceptible Western Corn Rootworms, Diabrotica Virgifera Virgifera, M. E. Scharf, S. Parimi, Lance J. Meinke, L. D. Chandler, Blair D. Siegfried

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

We have previously determined that cytochrome P450-based oxidation is involved in resistance to the insecticides methyl parathion and carbaryl in geographically distinct Nebraska western corn rootworm populations. Three new family 4 cytochrome P450 (CYP4) gene fragments (CYP4AJ1, CYP4G18 and CYP4AK1) were cloned and sequenced from insecticide-resistant and -susceptible western corn rootworms. Insecticide bioassays indicated the resistant population employed in this study was significantly resistant to the insecticides methyl parathion and carbaryl. CYP4AJ1 and CYP4G18 were cloned from both genomic PCR and RT-PCR products, although only CYP4AJ1 contains an intronic region. Alignments of inferred amino acid sequences with other homologous insect …

Decapitation Impacting Effect Of Topically Applied Chlorpyrifos On Acetylcholinesterase And General Esterases In Susceptible And Resistant German Cockroaches (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae), No-Joong Park, Shripat T. Kamble Jan 2001

Decapitation Impacting Effect Of Topically Applied Chlorpyrifos On Acetylcholinesterase And General Esterases In Susceptible And Resistant German Cockroaches (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae), No-Joong Park, Shripat T. Kamble

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The effect of topically applied chlorpyrifos on acetylcholinesterase and other esterases in heads and decapitated bodies of CSMA and Crawford German cockroaches was examined with spectrophotometric enzyme assay and native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The toxicity of chlorpyrifos was greatly reduced in decapitated CSMA male cockroaches with LD50 value 17.1-fold higher than that of normal CSMA cockroaches. Acetylcholinesterase activity from heads was significantly higher in the Crawford compared with the CSMA strain and did not change until 24 h after chlorpyrifos in vivo treatment in both strains. The p-nitrophenyl butyrate (NPB) esterase activities from both heads and decapitated bodies of …

The Stomatopod Alachosquilla Floridensis (Manning, 1962) (Crustacea, Stomatopoda, Nannosquillidae) Reported From Guana Island, British Virgin Islands, With Observations On Color, Joel W. Martin, Todd L. Zimmerman Jan 2001

The Stomatopod Alachosquilla Floridensis (Manning, 1962) (Crustacea, Stomatopoda, Nannosquillidae) Reported From Guana Island, British Virgin Islands, With Observations On Color, Joel W. Martin, Todd L. Zimmerman

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Although color pattern can vary among and within species of the Crustacea, it can also be a conservative feature that can be very helpful in field identifications. This is often the case in the Crustacea Decapoda, where sibling species can be detected by subtle differences in color (e.g., Williams and Felder 1989, Zimmerman and Felder 1991, Knowlton and Mills 1992). Stomatopods are among the most colorful crustaceans when living. Many species show a great deal of variability (Manning 1969, Camp 1973), and knowledge of this coloration is often key to their identification in the field and in the lab (Schotte …

A Performer's Guide To Theatrical Elements In Selected Trombone Literature, Cason Austin Duke Jan 2001

A Performer's Guide To Theatrical Elements In Selected Trombone Literature, Cason Austin Duke

LSU Major Papers

In the last forty years, many new solo and chamber pieces have been written for the trombone which involve elements of a theatrical nature, including lighting, make-up, costume, stage direction, dialogue/narration, sound effects, props, and audience interaction. It is difficult for a trombonist searching for music to discern a piece's theatrical nature by its listing in most catalogs. This document has attempted to solve that problem by gathering pieces that share these elements into an annotated collection. Nearly 200 pieces were discovered through contacts made with individual trombonists, composers, and publishers around the world. Of these, over sixty were acquired …

Effect Of Water Temperature On Growth Of Hatchery Reared Black Sea Turbot, Scophthalmus Maximus (Linnaeus, 1758), Temel Şahi̇n

Turkish Journal of Zoology

A rearing experiment was carried out to examine the effect of water temperature on the growth of the Black Sea turbot, Scophthalmus maximus, at ambient temperature (mean 15.2±0.6°C), 18, 20, 22 and 24°C with fish of 34.4±9.9 g initial body weight. The experiment lasted 30 days and the fish were fed to satiation three times a day with a commercial pelleted diet. Survival rates starting with the control group were 100, 83.4, 68.4, 3.4, and 1.7%, respectively. Although the mean weights of the groups were very similar at the beginning of the experiment, they had become markedly varied by the …

The Herpetofauna Of The Vicinity Of Silifke, İbrahi̇m Baran, Yusuf Kumlutaş, Kurtuluş Olgun, Çeti̇n Ilgaz, Yakup Kaska

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The number of herpetological studies about specific regions of Turkey are very limited compared to general herpetological studies. In an attempt to help fill this gap, a total of 89 specimens representing 11 reptile species were collected, for the first time, from two different localities in the vicinity of Silifke, and they were evaluated from the taxonomical point of view.

Japanese Intellectual Property Law In Translation: Representative Cases And Commentary, Kenneth L. Port Jan 2001

Japanese Intellectual Property Law In Translation: Representative Cases And Commentary, Kenneth L. Port

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Like much of Japanese law, Japanese intellectual property law is often criticized as being inaccessible. This inaccessibility has contributed to the misperception that Japanese case law regarding intellectual property does not exist. Even if it exists, the perception goes, it takes forever to track down and it is nearly irrelevant.

This Commentary, in a very modest way, is aimed at debunking the myth that Japanese case law regarding intellectual property is either non-existent or less meaningful than its U.S. counterpart. This Commentary consists of five translations of recent, significant intellectual property cases, as well as commentary regarding the relevance and …

Theses and Dissertations

The rural communities of the province of Imbabura present multiple problems of environmental, educational, and economic kind. Previous studies show that the rural communities of the Ecuadorian population present serious problems of health and nutrition, among those that excel are: poliparasitosis, respiratory infections and diarrheal, malnutrition, deficiency of micro nutrients, sanitary deficiency, scarce economic resources and low level of instruction. All these factors have caused a decrease in the productive capacity of the country and affected their level of development. In addition, delay exists in size in the students, which leads to a decrease in the capacity for physical work, …

Peer-To-Peer Sharing On The Internet: An Analysis Of How Gnutella Networks Are Used To Distribute Pornographic Material, Michael D. Mehta, Don Best, Nancy Poon

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

By our very nature, humans are creatures that communicate and network. Over the past several decades much of this communicating and networking has been facilitated by developments in information and communication technology. The social and economic transformations resulting from developments on the Internet have created several challenges for policymakers, lawmakers, courts and a wide range of other kinds of institutions. Some of these challenges are associated with the technologies and applications themselves. Other challenges result from content made available on the Internet and how users exchange data. Recent developments in peer-to-peer data exchange bring these two sets of challenges together.
