This study has also determined that there exists a relationship between these differing gender representations and concurrent changes in the gender norms of films created for the primary target audience the United States with secondary international audiences. This determination was aided by a detailed examination of the gender norms in multiple genres including science fiction, action, horror, and hybrid mixtures of these three. In addition, gender representations …

The National Invasive Species Act Of 1996: An Assessment Of Current Statutes And Potential Changes And Improvements For Future Legislation Regarding Ballast Water Discharge And Prevention Of Invasion By Non-Indigenous Species, Alison P. Armstrong

Open Access Master's Theses

Ninety-five percent of consumer goods used in the United States reach the markets by way of vessel transport. Each of these vessels carries ballast water, and with it, exotic organisms from ports around the world that can threaten native ecosystems.

A survey (n=10) conducted to gather perceptions on existing ballast water legislation shows that those state and federal agencies who are involved agree on certain aspects of the issue, but there are broad areas of dissent regarding other aspects. Policy actors do feel that this issue must be regulated, however, an agreement on how to reach the goals of ballast …

The Physiological Effects Of Catch And Release Angling On The Post-Release Survivorship Of Juvenile Sandbar Sharks (Carcharhinus Plumbeus), Abbey Leigh Spargo Jan 2001

The Physiological Effects Of Catch And Release Angling On The Post-Release Survivorship Of Juvenile Sandbar Sharks (Carcharhinus Plumbeus), Abbey Leigh Spargo

Open Access Master's Theses

A post release survivorship study of juvenile sandbar sharks (Carcharhinus plumbeus) was conducted in Delaware Bay during 1999-2000. A total of 104 sharks were captured and sampled for changes in blood chemistry after exposure to exhaustive exercise. Of these, 24 sharks were angled in the field, sampled, tagged, and released. The remaining 80 sharks were transported to a holding tank, allowed to recover, and half were angled to exhaustion. To quantify recovery, blood samples were taken from these fish at 0,1.5, 3, 6, 10, 14 and 24 hours, then tagged and released. Blood was obtained by caudal …

La Conceptualización De La Cultura En La Obra De Sarmiento Y Sus Implicaciones Políticas Para La Formación De Una Identidad Cultural Argentina, Marta Belen Rodriguez Galan Jan 2001

La Conceptualización De La Cultura En La Obra De Sarmiento Y Sus Implicaciones Políticas Para La Formación De Una Identidad Cultural Argentina, Marta Belen Rodriguez Galan

Open Access Master's Theses

Crossing Methodological Boundaries: Assessing Visitor Motivations And Support For Management Actions At Yellowstone National Park Using Quantitative And Qualitative Research Approaches, William T. Borrie, Wayne A. Freimund, Mae A. Davenport, Robert E. Manning Jan 2001

Crossing Methodological Boundaries: Assessing Visitor Motivations And Support For Management Actions At Yellowstone National Park Using Quantitative And Qualitative Research Approaches, William T. Borrie, Wayne A. Freimund, Mae A. Davenport, Robert E. Manning

Society and Conservation Faculty Publications

Winter use of Yellowstone National Park has given rise to a complex of management issues, including rapid growth in recreation demand, environmental impacts of snowmobiling, and a string of litigation against the National Park Service (NPS) designed to both protect park resources and maintain public access (Sacklin et al. 2000). The intertwined character of these problems suggests that none can be resolved independently of the other, that policy must be comprehensive in nature, and that many sources of knowledge may be required to effect their resolution.

Contaminated Equipment Packing And Transportation, Vladimir Zado Jan 2001

Contaminated Equipment Packing And Transportation, Vladimir Zado

Theses

The nuclear power plants are significant source of the equipment contamination by radioactive particles. Versatile equipment is used during plant operation and/or maintenance and is contaminated while performing required operations. Usually, the decontamination of used equipment is performed but in many cases the residual level of contamination is still higher than allowed for unconditional release. The usual routine is to apply the same equipment for the maintenance works of other nuclear power plants. Such approach gains the problem of packaging of the contaminated equipment into applicable containers and transportation of these containers to other nuclear facility where equipment is unpacked …

A Review Of The Research Literature Pertaining To The Effects Of Student Nutrition Upon Cognitive And Behavioral Performance In The Classroom In Support Of Nutritious Snack Interventions During The School Day, Patricia Annette Winblade

Graduate Research Papers

Many educators know from anecdotal experience that when students are hungry or undernourished, they tend to be irritable, apathetic, and lethargic. They often have little energy and have difficulty concentrating. All of these factors can interfere with learning as well as initiate inappropriate classroom behavior. This study reviews the available body of published research pertaining to the effects of nutrition upon cognitive and behavioral performance in the classroom. Specifically, the purpose of this study was to describe the effects of proper and improper nutrition of students on cognitive and behavioral performance in the context of examining the need for and …

Non-Technical Issues Involved In Moving A College Course From The Traditional Classroom To Cyberspace, Dixie L. Mercer Jan 2001

Non-Technical Issues Involved In Moving A College Course From The Traditional Classroom To Cyberspace, Dixie L. Mercer

Graduate Research Papers

Advances in communication technologies have rapidly led to interest in the development of online learning programs. The value of these programs is beginning to be accepted as a way of providing an alternative delivery system to students in higher education whose work schedules, family issues, or geographical location make it impractical to attend regularly scheduled classes on a college campus.

Despite the potential of online learning, online instruction is not simply a traditional class gone digital. The teaching and learning processes of traditional classes needs to be reexamined for online classes, as the technology becomes more widespread. Educators need to …

Integrating Literature-Based Language Arts And Science : A Unit On Frogs For Kindergarten, Ruth Rysta Jan 2001

Integrating Literature-Based Language Arts And Science : A Unit On Frogs For Kindergarten, Ruth Rysta

Graduate Research Papers

Classrooms providing a literature-base program allow children to engage in the language processes and present opportunities for children to create meaning by surrounding them with high-quality literature representative of different genres. Many of the language arts and science processes are related and can be integrated in themes or units to connect children's learning.

A unit on the life cycle of frogs offered kindergarten children a rich learning environment through quality literature and related expressive activities. The literature-base extended to science developed a sense of community, increased science knowledge and connected reading and writing to the science study.

An Overview Of The Nature Of Science For K-12 Science Teachers, William J. Soesbe Iii

Graduate Research Papers

Recent publicity has emphasized the concern of American citizens over student performance in the sciences. In an effort to evaluate one aspect of kindergarten through twelfth grade curricula that may have contributed to this situation, a comprehensive review of the literature concerning the nature of science was developed into a philosophical paper. The findings are synthesized into an analysis of the nature of science that provides a broad outline of the subject and related issues. The nature of science is a way of knowing that when balanced with scientific content and processes aids in the development of scientific literacy. Nonetheless, …
