The Personal Is Political And The Political Can Be Very Bloody Personal : Family Farming In A Deregulated Dairy Industry, Terese Reid Jan 2001

The Personal Is Political And The Political Can Be Very Bloody Personal : Family Farming In A Deregulated Dairy Industry, Terese Reid

Theses : Honours

This qualitative study considers the links between the political ideology that led to the deregulation of the dairy industry in July 2000 and the personal lived experiences of dairy farming families at a grass roots level. The post-deregulation experiences of dairy farming families within the South West region of Western are investigated through an engaged critical ethnographic methodology. A critical analysis of the political policies relating to dairy deregulation, is also incorporated within the study's methodological framework. The underlying aims of critical ethnography are emancipation, empowerment and liberation. The central purpose of this research is to give the daily farming …

Docile Bodies Of Water : Artificial Wetlands And Imagineered Suburbs, Steven Philip Mckiernan Jan 2001

Docile Bodies Of Water : Artificial Wetlands And Imagineered Suburbs, Steven Philip Mckiernan

Theses : Honours

Artificial wetlands are becoming an ever more visible feature of the landscape of Perth and the Swan Coastal Plain. They are appearing in the centre of new suburbs and also in the remediation of stormwater systems. Crucially wetlands have been a denigrated and abused part of the landscape. Imported landscape aesthetics have seen the function of wetlands as being an impediment to progress and the development of land. For indigenous Aboriginal peoples of the land, Nyoongar peoples, wetlandspaces (Giblett, I996a) are crucial to their inclusive understanding of 'country'. Intertwined with notions of spirituality, stewardship, and food source among others. With …

The Development Of A Valid And Reliable Instrument To Assess Constructivist Practices In Primary Classrooms, Bianca Herlihy Jan 2001

The Development Of A Valid And Reliable Instrument To Assess Constructivist Practices In Primary Classrooms, Bianca Herlihy

Theses : Honours

This study investigates the development of an instrument to measure teachers' constructivist practices in their classrooms. The Department of Education Curriculum Framework for Western Australia is based on a constructivist learning environment, and this study has sought to develop an instrument for exploring individual Western Australian teachers utilisation of a constructivist learning environment in their classrooms. While there are a number of studies relating to constructivist classroom practices, the literature review indicates that there is little research about actual practice in a Western Australian primary school context. The instrument was developed from an extensive review of the literature. Key theorists …

The Case For The Electromagnetic Commons An Ecocultural Intervention In Australian Spectrum Management, Scott Smith Jan 2001

The Case For The Electromagnetic Commons An Ecocultural Intervention In Australian Spectrum Management, Scott Smith

Theses : Honours

In the globalised world of the electronic, information age, there is one resource that increasingly appears to play a pertinent role in the future of our communications systems. The electromagnetosphere is an ecological region that is largely unacknowledged outside of scientific circles: it is one of those naturally-occurring phenomena that we simply take for granted. But with developments in communications technology we have learnt to tap the energies of this natural phenomenon, and in tum have developed a complex system of management and regulation where a 'property-mimicking' regime of allocation and licensing is in place. There are movements however, to …

What Features Of Interactive Multimedia Technology Maximise The Motivation Of Primary School Aged Children Learning Music Theory?, Nick Netis Jan 2001

What Features Of Interactive Multimedia Technology Maximise The Motivation Of Primary School Aged Children Learning Music Theory?, Nick Netis

Theses : Honours

This study was conducted to find out what features of interactive multimedia elements best engage children between the ages of 8 and 12 in the process of learning music theory. Previous research into similar areas has indicated that multimedia technologies, such as CD-ROM, arc advantageous in teaching musical theory. A commercially available software application, Musicolour, that uses multimedia delivery of musical theory lessons, was analysed to identify the elements that the students found motivating. These features included the use of a combination of audio cues, graphical cues and interactivity. The findings were analysed to determine which multimedia elements or combination …

Using Habitat Characteristics And Predictive Gis Modelling To Aid In Conserving The Heath Mouse (Pseudomys Shortridgei) In Lake Magenta Nature Reserve, Kirsty Quinlan Jan 2001

Using Habitat Characteristics And Predictive Gis Modelling To Aid In Conserving The Heath Mouse (Pseudomys Shortridgei) In Lake Magenta Nature Reserve, Kirsty Quinlan

Theses : Honours

The Heath Mouse (Pseutlomys shortridgei) was formerly widely distributed in Western Australia and Victoria. However, now it is known only to exist in areasof fragmented habitat. Heath Mouse populations have not been investigated in Western Australia, as it was thought to be extinct in the state until its rediscovery in 1987. It is known from only tour locations, and from these, the highest numbers known are probably the 18 captures of this mouse from five years of trapping in Lake Magenta Nature Reserve. Given the few numbers of Heath Mice, the purpose of this study was to identify …

The Effects Of Ageing On The Myocardium, Alana J. Mason Jan 2001

The Effects Of Ageing On The Myocardium, Alana J. Mason

Theses : Honours

Investigating the causes of ageing on the myocardium is especially important for the future health of Australia's ageing population, which is increasing due to increased life expectancy (AIHW, 1999). Cardiovascular disease is currently Australia's greatest health problem ( AIHW, 1999), and since the aged population is most commonly affected by this disease (HSVD, 1999), investigating the causes of ageing of the myocardium and the predisposing factors of cardiovascular disease is important for the future health of Australia's ageing population. In this study, male and female Wistar rats [young (11 = 8, aged 12-30 weeks old), middle aged (11 = 6, …

In June of 2000 I was fortunate enough to become a member of a small team of Edith Cowan University students lead by Dr William Leadbetter participating in archaeological fieldwork in Turkey. The site, known as Aperlac, is a fortified industrial site located on the southwest coast of Turkey, in an area known in antiquity as Lycia. The Edith Cowan team was originally asked to study and record the inscriptions that had been found up on the many sarcophagi present up on the site. Up on reaching the site and reviewing the existing data concerning the tombs up on which …

Adequacy Of Terrestrial Fauna Surveys For The Preparation Of Environmental Impact Assessments In The Mining Industry Of Western Australia [Thesis], Jason L. Fraser Jan 2001

Adequacy Of Terrestrial Fauna Surveys For The Preparation Of Environmental Impact Assessments In The Mining Industry Of Western Australia [Thesis], Jason L. Fraser

Theses : Honours

The Environmental protection Authority has indicated that terrestrial fauna surveys as undertaken for the purpose of preparing Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) are not providing adequate information to enable decision-makers to assess development impacts on biodiversity and ecosystems. In the absence of a protocol to assess current standards of terrestrial fauna surveys, 'best practice' was defined through discussions held with an 'expert panel', and quantified through a questionnaire. This study examined current standards of terrestrial vertebrate fauna surveys, prepared for the purpose of EIA, with 'best practice' as defined by relevant expert opinion. Strengths and weaknesses of terrestrial fauna surveys were …

Back Stress And Assistance Exercises In Extreme Weightlifting, Adam J. Beard Jan 2001

Back Stress And Assistance Exercises In Extreme Weightlifting, Adam J. Beard

Theses : Honours

The purpose or this study was to test the suitability or selected assistance exercises to strengthen the low back for the Olympic lilts in elite weightlifters. Four subjects were filmed by a five-camera Motion Analysis system operating at 120Hz. The subjects completed both or the Olympic lifts (Snatch and Clean) at a near one repetition maximum and four assistance exercises (Bent-over Row, Clean Pull Deadlift, Romanian Deadlift, and Good Morning) at an intensity typically performed at a routine training session. Peak moments, compressive and shear forces about the L5/S1 intervertebral joint were calculated via a top-down inverse dynamics model. Comparisons …

The Grass Will Not Be Trampled Because The Tigers Need Not Fight, Markus G. Puder Jan 2001

The Grass Will Not Be Trampled Because The Tigers Need Not Fight, Markus G. Puder

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Article examines the relationship between the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic, and explores whether the German experience may contain lessons for the relations between the People's Republic of China and Taiwan. The Author's analysis of the German situation begins with a discussion of the relations between the separate German states, with a particular emphasis on how that relationship was shaped by the Basic Treaty. That document provided for the promotion of peaceful relations, recognition of independence and sovereignty of each nation, as well as a normalization of the diplomatic relations. After ratification, the Bavarian State …
