Feeding And Managing Dairy Calves And Heifers, David J. Schingoethe, Alvaro Garcia Nov 2001

Feeding And Managing Dairy Calves And Heifers, David J. Schingoethe, Alvaro Garcia

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

If improved breeding and management practices are followed heifers will most likely be better than the cows in the dairy herd today. Costs of raising a heifer to 24 months of age may range between $800 and $1,500 depending on the farm. If heifers calve at more than 24 months of age, $2 per day are lost in feed, herd replacements and lifetime production. Although reducing the calving age may have a positive impact on profitability, heifers must grow at an optimal rate to avoid calving problems and to have a successful first lactation. Some practices recommended for raising heifers …

The Market For Television Advertising: Model And Evidence , Robert Kieschnick , B. D. Mccullough, Steven S. Wildman Nov 2001

The Market For Television Advertising: Model And Evidence , Robert Kieschnick , B. D. Mccullough, Steven S. Wildman

Review of Marketing Science Working Papers

We provide a model of television advertising based on an explicit characterization of an advertisement's contribution to an advertiser's profits that suggests that each program faces a downward sloping demand for its ad time. Hence Fournier and Martin's (1983) "law of one price" does not hold in our model. We study these contrasting arguments about television advertising by examining the pricing of broadcast network advertising. In conducting this empirical examination we encounter and solve a severe multicollinearity problem. We conclude that the evidence supports the advertising model presented in this paper and demonstrates segmentation between cable and broadcast viewers in …

The Effect Of Thermal Stress On The Mating Behavior Of Three Drosophila Species, Zachary J. Patton, Robert A. Krebs Nov 2001

The Effect Of Thermal Stress On The Mating Behavior Of Three Drosophila Species, Zachary J. Patton, Robert A. Krebs

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

Selection may act on the weakest link in fitness to change how a species adapts to an environmental stress. For many species, this limitation may be reproduction. After adult Drosophila melanogaster, Drosophila simulans, and Drosophila mojavensis males were exposed to varying levels of thermal stress well below those that endanger life, courtship and mating frequency declined. The regression coefficients of both courtship and mating success did not differ significantly between D. melanogaster and D. simulans males. In contrast, significant differences were present between the two cosmopolitan species and D. mojavensis. Courtship frequency decreased at a much slower rate in D. …

Effects Of Hypoxia On Egg Capsule Conductance In Ambystoma (Class Amphibia, Order Caudata), N. E. Mills, M. Christopher Barnhart, R. D. Semlitsch Nov 2001

Effects Of Hypoxia On Egg Capsule Conductance In Ambystoma (Class Amphibia, Order Caudata), N. E. Mills, M. Christopher Barnhart, R. D. Semlitsch

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Aquatic amphibian eggs frequently encounter hypoxic conditions that have the potential to limit oxygen uptake and thereby slow embryonic development and hatching. Oxygen limitation might be avoided if egg capsule surface area and oxygen conductance increased in response to hypoxia. We investigated this possibility in two salamander species, Ambystoma annulatum and Ambystoma talpoideum. The effective surface area of egg capsules increased in response to hypoxia, which increased the conductance for oxygen and enhanced oxygen transport. The ability of amphibian eggs to adjust their conductance in response to oxygen availability may increase survival in hypoxic environments.

Inclusive Boundaries And Other (Im)Possible Paths Toward Community Development In A Global World, Fran Ansley Nov 2001

Inclusive Boundaries And Other (Im)Possible Paths Toward Community Development In A Global World, Fran Ansley

Scholarly Works

This paper is based on a talk given at a University of Pennsylvania symposium on Social Movements and Law Reform. In it Professor Ansley takes as a case study the U.S. movement against plant closings. In the seventies, eighties and nineties this movement attempted to respond to the increasing flow of industrial capital from the U.S. to other countries. Like other social movements, it devoted a significant part of its energy to "framing" its issues - articulating and attempting to promote a particular way of looking at the issue of plant closings, de-industrialization, and the new international division of labor. …

Effect Of Cooling Rate On Crystallization Behavior Of Milk Fat Fraction/Sunflower Oil Blends, Silvana Martini, M. L. Herrera, R. W. Hartel Nov 2001

Effect Of Cooling Rate On Crystallization Behavior Of Milk Fat Fraction/Sunflower Oil Blends, Silvana Martini, M. L. Herrera, R. W. Hartel

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

The effect of cooling rate (slow: 0.1°C/min; fast: 5.5°C/min) on the crystallization kinetics of blends of a highmelting milk fat fraction and sunflower oil (SFO) was investigated by pulsed NMR and DSC. For slow cooling rate, the majority of crystallization had already occurred by the time the set crystallization temperature had been reached. For fast cooling rate, crystallization started after the samples reached the selected crystallization temperature, and the solid fat content curves were hyperbolic. DSC scans showed that at slow cooling rates, molecular organization took place as the sample was being cooled to crystallization temperature and there was fractionation …

Moisture Problems In Manufactured Housing: Probable Causes And Cures, Florida Solar Energy Center, Neil Moyer Nov 2001

Moisture Problems In Manufactured Housing: Probable Causes And Cures, Florida Solar Energy Center, Neil Moyer

FSEC Energy Research Center®

A significant number of new manufactured houses built to HUD code and located in the hot, humid Southeast are experiencing moisture problems. Soft wallboards, buckled floors, damaged wood molding and extensive mold growth are the most common symptoms. These problems do not respond to the standard service and repair strategies for water intrusion

At the request of four manufacturers, over twenty-five such moisture damaged homes were investigated in 1999 and 2000 to determine likely causes. One time blower door, duct tightness and pressure differential measurements were performed on all homes. Field data on ambient, crawlspace, belly and house temperatures and …

Fisheries Research Report No. 136 - Assessment Of Gonad Staging Systems And Other Methods Used In The Study Of The Reproductive Biology Of Narrow-Barred Spanish Mackerel, Scomberomorus Commerson, In Western Australia, Michael C. Mackie, Paul Lewis Nov 2001

Fisheries Research Report No. 136 - Assessment Of Gonad Staging Systems And Other Methods Used In The Study Of The Reproductive Biology Of Narrow-Barred Spanish Mackerel, Scomberomorus Commerson, In Western Australia, Michael C. Mackie, Paul Lewis

Fisheries Research Reports

Recent research by the Department of Fisheries in Western Australia into the reproductive biology of narrow-barred Spanish mackerel has required the use of various field and laboratory techniques. This report documents the procedures and adaptations of some of these techniques. Assessment and development of illustrated, relevant macroscopic and microscopic staging systems were of particular focus because both have been essential components of the research. The simplified and more reliable macroscopic staging system we developed allowed full use of all gonad samples and a more complete (albeit less distinct) overview of the seasonal pattern of gonad reproductive development. This macroscopic staging …

Number Names In Words And Phrases, Rex Gooch

Word Ways

Ross Eckler's Making the ALphabet Dance (St. Martin's 1996) lists 20 words on page 236, each containing one of the number names from 1 to 20, using the Pocket Merriam-Webster as source. As an example, COUNTERFEIT contains FOURTEEN. The following page similarly list 26 of the number names for 30 to 99 included in words from Webster's Second, many found by Jeremy Morse.

Transposing The State Capitals, Darryl Francis Nov 2001

Transposing The State Capitals, Darryl Francis

Word Ways

The subject of finding transposals for the US state names has been documented many times in Word Ways. However, I don't believe that any attention has been paid to seeking transposals for the names of the state capitals. I decided to have a shot at seeing how many of the 50 state capital names could be transposed. Initially, my hopes were not particularly high-I expected to find no more than a handful of transposable names, perhaps 5 or 6. In the event, I unearthed 20 transposals, some of them perfectly good dictionary words, and others requiring a little more flexibility …
