Curriculum Differentiation In Practice, Twyla D. Wisecup

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this project is to create two curriculum differentiated reading units designed to meet the needs of fifth grade, high-ability language arts students. The units were written to compliment existing whole class units already in use, and to coincide with major district goals encouraging students to take control of their own learning by making decisions about their writing, selecting their reading materials, and assessing their progress. This paper gives a broad definition of curriculum differentiation and reviews the literature in regard to differentiation of curriculum in the field of gifted education, and provides a focus on possible strategies …

Production Of Single-Cell Protein From Ram Horn Hydrolysate, Esabi̇ Başaran Kurbanoğlu Jan 2001

Production Of Single-Cell Protein From Ram Horn Hydrolysate, Esabi̇ Başaran Kurbanoğlu

Turkish Journal of Biology

Candida utilis NRRL Y-900 was grown on horn hydrolysate for single-cell protein production. First, ram horns obtained from slaughterhouse in Erzurum were hydrolyzed by physical and chemical methods and crude horn hydrolysate (CHH) was obtained. The contents of protein, nitrogen, ash, some minerals, total sugars and amino acids of CHH were determined and it was seen that it has sufficient organic and inorganic materials to allow its use as a substrate source in the production of single-cell protein. The CHH was enriched by addition of yeast extract, glucose and KH_2PO_4. The effects of different CHH concentrations (1, 2, 3, 4, …

Viral Control Of The European Pine Sawfly, Neodiprion Sertifer (Geoffroy) In Turkey, Mustafa Yaman, Remzi̇ye Nalçacioğlu, Zi̇hni̇ Demi̇rbağ Jan 2001

Viral Control Of The European Pine Sawfly, Neodiprion Sertifer (Geoffroy) In Turkey, Mustafa Yaman, Remzi̇ye Nalçacioğlu, Zi̇hni̇ Demi̇rbağ

Turkish Journal of Biology

The European pine sawfly, Neodiprion sertifer (Geoffr.) (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae), is a serious pest of pine plantations and ornamentals. Chemical pesticides used to control this pest have a detrimental effect on the environment. The Neodiprion sertifer nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NsNPV) frequently causes considerable decreases in the populations but doses not harm other animals or plants. In this study, we tested five different concentrations of NsNPV against the larvae of N. sertifer and showed viral infection using Giemsa staining. When a viral concentration of 5x10^9 PIB/ml (Polyhedral Inclusion Body) was utilized, larval mortality started on the fourth day and reached 90.4% on …

"Of One Kind Or Another": Rape In The Fiction Of Eudora Welty, Nicole M. Donald Jan 2001

"Of One Kind Or Another": Rape In The Fiction Of Eudora Welty, Nicole M. Donald

LSU Master's Theses

"Of One Kind or Another:" Rape in the Fiction of Eudora Welty explores the ways in which Eudora Welty's repeated inclusion of rape in her fiction reveals and questions southern society and women's roles in it. Despite the vague, even confusing language with which she describes the incidents of rape. Welty offers a rich, forceful commentary upon the culture and women's roles in it. The ambiguity with which she describes rape reveals ambivalence toward the society that Welty may be said at once to protect and to expose. An examination of Welty's use of rape in her fiction reveals a …

Near The Lewis & Clark Trail, Chad Colin Husted Jan 2001

Near The Lewis & Clark Trail, Chad Colin Husted

LSU Master's Theses

Near the Lewis & Clark Trail is a creative writing thesis that contains two distinct parts. Part one is a short story cycle: a collection of interlinked narratives that together, tell a larger, cohesive story. Many different points of view, narrative techniques, and non-linear time sequences are used in order to provide a pastiche of different voices, points in time, and perspectives, that ultimately form an overall narrative structure. In addition to the stories, there are several fictional documents that are used to separate the work at critical times, and to provide subtext. In between the stories are: a letter …

A "New" Theory Of Management, Andrew Sikula Sr., Kurt Olmosk, Chong W. Kim, Stephen Cupps Jan 2001

A "New" Theory Of Management, Andrew Sikula Sr., Kurt Olmosk, Chong W. Kim, Stephen Cupps

Management Faculty Research

This article presents a "new" theory of management for the new millennium: "new" not because singularly the ideas are recent, but because the combination of these older ideas collectively is novel. To some extent, this article represents the reestablishment of previously existing employment ethics that for various and sundry reasons lapsed into disuse in the past several decades. This article discusses employee relations ethics (ERE) in terms of an ERE credo and a set of assumptions. The modern millennium mission states that all organizations (public and private) should primarily be employee centered, not owner or administrator controlled, customer or client …

Fair Use Infrastructure For Rights Management Systems, Dan L. Burk, Julie E. Cohen Jan 2001

Fair Use Infrastructure For Rights Management Systems, Dan L. Burk, Julie E. Cohen

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this paper, we consider whether rights management systems can be supported by legal and institutional infrastructures that enable appropriate public access to the works secured by these technologies. We focus primarily on the design challenges posed by the fair use doctrine, which historically has played a central role in preserving such access. Throughout the paper, however, we also use the term "fair use" to refer more generally to the variety of limiting doctrines within copyright law that serve this goal. We begin in Part II by reviewing the contours of the fair use doctrine and the legal and policy …

The Clean Air Act And The Constitution, Lisa Heinzerling Jan 2001

The Clean Air Act And The Constitution, Lisa Heinzerling

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In the summer of 1997, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) strengthened the air quality standards for two air pollutants, particulate matter and ozone, based on mounting scientific evidence of the harmfulness of these pollutants at levels allowed by the existing standards. With respect to particulate matter (PM), the agency found that numerous epidemiological studies had established an association between PM levels and premature deaths in humans, especially in the elderly population. Indeed, one study on which the EPA relied had found that approximately 60,000 premature deaths in the United States alone could be attributed, annually, to particulate matter. The scientific …

Of Butterflies And Bitterness?: Legal Fictions In Corporate And Securities Law, Mary G. Condon Jan 2001

Of Butterflies And Bitterness?: Legal Fictions In Corporate And Securities Law, Mary G. Condon

Articles & Book Chapters

The theme of fictions in law in the context of corporate and securities law raises some intriguing issues, and I am particularly grateful for the opportunity it gives me to rethink some of my previous work on corporate law. At one level, the topic of fictions in law is an obvious one for an Anglo-American corporate lawyer. One of the first principles of Anglo-American corporate law that students learn is that the corporation is best understood as a legal fiction. The principle is otherwise known as the doctrine of the separate legal personality of the corporation. This is the idea …

A Fisheries Model For Managing The Oyster Fishery During Times Of Disease, John M. Klinck, Eric N. Powell, John N. Kraeuter, Susan E. Ford Jan 2001

A Fisheries Model For Managing The Oyster Fishery During Times Of Disease, John M. Klinck, Eric N. Powell, John N. Kraeuter, Susan E. Ford

CCPO Publications

Setting the yearly allocation for a fished stock is always an uncertain endeavor. Populations suffering significant mortality from disease require particularly careful management. Disease mortality is not a standard component of Fisheries models, however. Here, we develop a model for the management of fished oyster populations in which disease mortality is a controlling influence. The model requires a quantitative estimate of abundance by size class, some knowledge about growth rates to establish the size range recruiting into the fishery, and an estimate of the anticipated natural mortality rate. The latter is of considerable consequence because small changes in mortality rate …

Will The Heavens Fall? De-Radicalizing The Precedent-Breaking Decision, Paul Waldau Jan 2001

Will The Heavens Fall? De-Radicalizing The Precedent-Breaking Decision, Paul Waldau

Animal Law Review

This article offers an extended analogy for the purpose of posing basic questions about proposals for granting legal rights to some nonhuman animals. The analogy is drawn from the precedent-breaking eighteenth century English case Somerset v. Stewart, which liberated an African slave. The article argues that one can identify features of the eighteenth century debate which illuminate features of today's debate over proposed uses of centrally important legal concepts for some nonhuman animals. Using the comparison for the limited task of highlighting the complex cultural backdrop in each situation, the article suggests that the comparison helps one see the nature …

Recovery Of "Non-Economic" Damages For Wrongful Killing Or Injury Of Companion Animals: A Judicial And Legislative Trend, Sonia S. Waisman, Barbara R. Newell Jan 2001

Recovery Of "Non-Economic" Damages For Wrongful Killing Or Injury Of Companion Animals: A Judicial And Legislative Trend, Sonia S. Waisman, Barbara R. Newell

Animal Law Review

The emotional bond between humans and their animal companions can be as strong as that experienced between two people, and animal companions are often looked upon and treated as members of the family. When they are wrongfully killed or injured, however, the legal system traditionally has not adequately recognized this important relationship. Instead, recovery has been limited to the market value of the animals. It is time for state laws to explicitly acknowledge the significance of the human-animal companion relationship and codify recovery for such non-economic injuries as emotional distress and loss of companionship. This article examines why damages for …

2000 Legislative Review, Alicia Finigan

Animal Law Review

Our third Legislative Review reports the passage and de- feat of several state and federal, administrative and legislative actions. Ms. Laurie Fulkerson has researched and written on four major pieces of federal legislation; Mr. Chris Brown has discussed additional federal advances, and a review of state initiatives which both advance and undermine animal welfare; Ms. Amy Baggio has reviewed the passage of state anti-cruelty statues. Finally, Ms. Alicia Finigan has reported on the United State's Pelly Amendment certification of Japan for violating the International Whaling Commission's resolution to cease its illusory "research whaling" for minke, sperm and Bryde's whales.

Dead Dog Running: The Cruelty Of Greyhound Racing And The Bases For Its Abolition In Massachusetts, Erin N. Jackson Jan 2001

Dead Dog Running: The Cruelty Of Greyhound Racing And The Bases For Its Abolition In Massachusetts, Erin N. Jackson

Animal Law Review

Under the guise of sport, greyhound racing persists in Massachusetts and sixteen other states, despite the industry's notoriety for animal abuse. The cruel practices employed in greyhound racing, including the culling of litters; the use of live lures in training; the provision of substandard living conditions and care; and the systemic, premature killing of greyhounds bear undeniable likeness to the barbarity perpetrated in the illicit animal fighting sports of bullfighting, dogfighting, and cockfighting. Yet, greyhound racing masquerades in the Commonwealth as an innocuous pastime, even though the industry-wide, calculated refusal to provide care for and consequent killing of throngs of …
