Looking Under The Hood And Tinkering With Voter Cynicism: Ross Perot And “Perspective By Incongruity”, Mari Boor Tonn, Valerie A. Endress Jan 2001

Looking Under The Hood And Tinkering With Voter Cynicism: Ross Perot And “Perspective By Incongruity”, Mari Boor Tonn, Valerie A. Endress

Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This essay examines Ross Perot’s 1992 presidential bid as a comic catalyst for a reinvigorated view of civic responsibility. Despite the Texas maverick’s political naiveté and penchant for miscalculation, his very presence in the campaign reanimated Americans’ conception of grassroots democracy. By examining important and previously unexplored distinctions between planned and unplanned incongruity, we probe the means by which Perot invited consideration of alternative political perspectives and offered an appealing glimpse into a dormant, more deeply held democratic ideal.

The Evaluation Of Pcr-Based Techniques For The Detection Of Fecal Indicator Organisms In Environmental Samples, Quinesha Laticia Perry Jan 2001

The Evaluation Of Pcr-Based Techniques For The Detection Of Fecal Indicator Organisms In Environmental Samples, Quinesha Laticia Perry

LSU Master's Theses

Escherichia coli is the indicator organism of choice for the detection of fecal contamination. Standard methods for detecting fecal contamination often rely on detecting fecal coliforms. While this practice if highly efficient in most applications, when used with the sediment-laden waters of Louisiana, free-living soil bacteria, such as Klebsiella pneumoniae were shown to inflate the fecal coliform counts. An accurate assessment of the contamination problem requires methods that detect E. coli. To detect E. coli, several of species-specific genes were tested before the gadAB genes were selected. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was chosen to detect these genes using a …

Signs Sense: Exploring Signs In Urban Place Making, Amy Elizabeth Pecquet Jan 2001

Signs Sense: Exploring Signs In Urban Place Making, Amy Elizabeth Pecquet

LSU Master's Theses

Signs are prominent elements of the urban landscape; they display messages to the public, orient people in complex environments, act as social landmarks, and serve as a means of cultural expression. Despite the omnipresence of signs, designers have yet to capitalize on their potential urban spaces as creative design tools for enhancing a sense of place. Using literature and urban case studies, this thesis explores several quantitative methods to learn about effects produced by signs in the urban landscape. Case studies in New Orleans, Louisiana locate every sign in defined areas on Bourbon, Royal, and Canal Street to compare and …

Microhabitat Use In An Assemblage Of Native And Introduced Stream Fishes In Wailoa Stream, Island Of Hawaii, Mark G. Mcrae Jan 2001

Microhabitat Use In An Assemblage Of Native And Introduced Stream Fishes In Wailoa Stream, Island Of Hawaii, Mark G. Mcrae

LSU Master's Theses

To date, most research on the ecology of Hawaiian stream fishes has taken place in the middle and upper reaches of streams. In the terminal reaches of streams in Hawaii, the ecological aspects of the relatively more diverse fish assemblages are largely unknown. This study investigated patterns of microhabitat use in an assemblage of native and introduced stream fishes living in the terminal reach of Wailoa Stream on the Island of Hawaii. Multivariate and univariate analyses of microhabitat data collected through underwater visual surveys indicated that differences in microhabitat preferences were an important factor in the structure of this assemblage. …

Cardiac Hypertrophy, Heart Failure, And Regulation Of Microtubule Stability, Kristie Lynn Beaton-Blade Jan 2001

Cardiac Hypertrophy, Heart Failure, And Regulation Of Microtubule Stability, Kristie Lynn Beaton-Blade

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

This work focused on the regulation of the different isotypes of beta-tubulin during cardiac hypertrophy, with the specific hypothesis that increased levels of the beta I isotype leads to the increase in microtubule density seen during hypertrophy. Partial cDNAs for the three beta-tubulin isotypes expressed in the heart (I, II, and IV) have been cloned and used to show that there is a differential upregulation of the beta I and beta II isotypes during cardiac hypertrophy. Messenger RNA half-life studies of cells isolated from hypertrophied myocardium have shown that this upregulation is due to increased transcription of the genes encoding …

Embryonic Stem Cell Research As An Ethical Issue: On The Emptiness Of Symbolic Value, Kevin P. Quinn Jan 2001

Embryonic Stem Cell Research As An Ethical Issue: On The Emptiness Of Symbolic Value, Kevin P. Quinn

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The debate over human embryonic stem cell research-scientific and clinical prospects as well as ethical implications-became front-page news only after two teams of university researchers reported in November 1998 that they had isolated and cultured human pluripotent stem cells. The discovery caused a flurry of excitement among patients and researchers and drew attention from President Clinton, who instructed the National Bioethics Advisory Commission (NBAC) to "conduct a thorough review of the issues associated with. .. human stem cell research, balancing all medical and ethical issues.”

Middle-Class Black Suburbs And The State Of Integration: A Post-Integrationist Vision For Metropolitan America, Sheryll Cashin Jan 2001

Middle-Class Black Suburbs And The State Of Integration: A Post-Integrationist Vision For Metropolitan America, Sheryll Cashin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Despite the gradual move towards integration in the United States, segregated communities, divided along socio-economic and racial lines, continue to exist, and indeed have taken on new forms. Given the choice between racial segregation and integration as minority members of a community, some middle-class African Americans have chosen to create their own communities, thus forming the modern day middle-class black suburb. Now, majority African-American suburbs rest adjacent to majority-white suburbs, but the segregated communities share little but the town line.

In this Article, Professor Cashin addresses the timely and difficult question of whether the middle-class black suburb is a new …

Torts Teaching: From Basic Training To Legal-Process Theory: Dominick Vetri, "Tort Law And Practice", Joseph A. Page

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

It was in the course of my meanderings through the torts-casebook landscape that I came upon Professor Dominick Vetri's entry in the field. The quality that first attracted me was the way it fashioned a user-friendly introduction to the study of law, to the uniqueness of the common law, and to the centrality of process. The book demonstrated an unusual sensitivity to the bewilderment of beginners and made a special effort to anticipate their needs and concerns. Yet what made Vetri's approach particularly intriguing was that it managed to play not only to nervous neophytes, but also to students in …

Out Of The Ordinary: Law, Power, Culture, And The Commonplace, Naomi Mezey Jan 2001

Out Of The Ordinary: Law, Power, Culture, And The Commonplace, Naomi Mezey

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Review of The Common Place of Law: Stories From Everyday Life by Patricia Ewick & Susan S. Silbey (1998).

Sometimes a work's intellectual influences reveal both its strengths and its shortcomings. This is certainly the case with Patricia Ewick and Susan Silbey's The Common Place of Law: Stories From Everyday Life, and its indebtedness to the thinking of Michel Foucault and Michel de Certeau. Taken together, Foucault and de Certeau's work suggests that investigations of law's power are most fruitful not at the level of legal institutions and the state but at the level of lived experience, where we …

The Citizen Submission Process Of The North American Commission For Environmental Cooperation, Jaime Miguel Carreno-Martinez Jan 2001

The Citizen Submission Process Of The North American Commission For Environmental Cooperation, Jaime Miguel Carreno-Martinez

LLM Theses

In order to address the environmental concerns raised by the existence of a continent-wide free trade zone, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Canada, United States and Mexico created an environmental side agreement, the North American Agreement for Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC). NAAEC established the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC), a trilateral body created to help the NAFTA Parties achieve the goal of free trade while at the same time avoiding or lessening environmental industrial degradation. Although imperfect, the NAAEC embodies several processes that were innovative. The key innovation is the Citizen Submission Process that allows citizens and NGOs to …

Computer Simulation Of Inspiratory Flow And Particle Deposition In Human Oral Airway, Xiaobo Zhu Jan 2001

Computer Simulation Of Inspiratory Flow And Particle Deposition In Human Oral Airway, Xiaobo Zhu

Open Access Dissertations

In this dissertation, the inspiratory air flow and aerosol deposition in the human oral airway are simulated using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software package, CFX. The dissertation consists of two parts: In the first part, a three-dimensional curvilinear body-fitted grid system was developed based on the geometry of an anatomically accurate human oral airway. The respiratory tract consists of oral cavity, oropharynx, larynx and upper trachea. Velocity profiles and pressure fields at various inspiratory flow rates observed during aerosol medicine therapy were simulated. Both laminar and turbulent models were employed depending on the Reynolds number defined at the …

Protecting The Tax-Exempt Status Of Housing Developers Participating In Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Partnershps, Marni Hussong Jan 2001

Protecting The Tax-Exempt Status Of Housing Developers Participating In Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Partnershps, Marni Hussong

Washington Law Review

The Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) is an important source of federal funding for developers of affordable housing for low-income persons. Although for-profit and nonprofit developers compete for credits, the federal government reserves ten percent of the credits for nonprofit, tax-exempt developers. Exempt developers often sell the credits to for-profit investors, forming a partnership through which the exempt organization develops the housing and the investors receive tax benefits in exchange for capital contributions. The partnership formation, however, may jeopardize the tax-exempt status of the nonprofit organizations and result in the partnership losing the LIHTC. To maintain exempt status, the Internal …
