Properties Of A Factor In Eland Plasma That Inhibits Transformation Of Bloodstream-Form Trypanosoma Brucei Brucei, E. K. Nguu, E. O. Osir
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Fresh plasma from the African eland, Taiirotragus oryx, contains a factor that inhibits the transformation of bloodstream-form Trypanosma bnicei bntcei into procyclic (midgut) forms. Heating of the plasma at 42, 50 and 60 °C for 30 min resulted in a 20, 38 and 40% loss of inhibitor activity respectively, whereas only negligible loss occurred below 42 C. Similarly, one and four freeze-thawing cycles resulted in 32 and 60% loss of activity respectively. Inactivation of the inhibitor activity, which occurred rapidly during storage (for example, 80% loss after 7 days at -20 °C) could not be stopped by the addition of …

Habitat Management Strategies For The Control Of Cereal Stemborers And Striga In Maize In Kenya, Z. R. Khan, J. A. Pickett, L. Wadhams, F. Muyekho
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Maize is the principal food and cash crop for millions of people in the predominantly mixed crop-livestock farming systems in Kenya. Stemborers and striga (Striga hermonthica) are major constraints to increased maize production in eastern Africa. An intercropping and trap crop system has been developed, using a ‘push-pull’ strategy, for the control of stemborers in small scale maize farming systems. The ‘push-pull’ strategy involves trapping stemborers on highly susceptible trap plants (pull) and driving them away from the crop using repellent intercrops (push). Napier grass (Pennisetum piirpiirenm Schumach) and Sudan grass (Sorghum vulgare sudanense Stapf J are used as trap …
Pathogenicity And Antifeedant Activity Of Entomopathogenic Hyphomycetes To The Cowpea Leaf Beetle, Ootheca Mutabilis Shalberg, S. Ekesi
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Conidial suspensions of four isolates each of Bcauvcria bassiana and Melnrhizhtm anisopliae were evaluated in the laboratory for their virulence to adult Ootlicca mntabilis. All the isolates tested were pathogenic to the beetle, but to varying degrees. Three of them, B. bassiana CPD 3 and CPD10 and M. anisopliae CPD 6 were superior to all other isolates in terms of mortality induced on adult beetle, LT50 and LC50, with B. bnssiana CPD 3 having the lowest LC50 value. In feeding assayi consumption by beetles treated with B. bnssiana CPD 3 was significantly reduced within 2 days treatment (DAT) and the …

Investigating Determinants Of Macular Pigment Optical Density And Macular Pigment Distribution In Adults Aged 45--73: Can Enhanced Analytical Techniques Improve The Ability To Predict Macular Pigment Status?, Joanne Delaney Burke
Doctoral Dissertations
This research assessed the relationships of dietary, sex, and biochemical factors to macular pigment optical density (MPOD) and macular pigment (MP) distribution in 108 adults. Dietary assessment tools were evaluated for their ability to predict MP status. Macular pigment was assessed at four foveal sites and one parafoveal site. An average composite macular pigment value (CMPV) was calculated based on the MPOD results. Group mean MPOD results from most to least central retinal locations, were 0.43 (SE +/- 0.017), 0.36 (SE +/- 0.013), 0.28 (SE +/- 0.012), and 0.13 (SE +/- 0.008), respectively. The CMTV was 0.26 (SE +/- 0.0 …

Unenumerated Rights Under The U.S. Constitution, Thomas B. Mcaffee
Unenumerated Rights Under The U.S. Constitution, Thomas B. Mcaffee
Scholarly Works
The symbol of modern constitutional law, for good or ill, is Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court’s abortion decision. From the beginning, the big question has been, where in the text of the Constitution do were find this “right of privacy” that secures the right to choose abortion? Some scholars have argued that such a right could not be found in the text or structure of the Constitution. One powerful counter stems from a textual approach to giving effect to the Constitution. In this article, the author argues that, if we look carefully enough at the text and history, …
Bioirrigation Modeling In Experimental Benthic Mesocosms, Yoko Furukawa, Samuel J. Bentley, Dawn L. Lavoie
Bioirrigation Modeling In Experimental Benthic Mesocosms, Yoko Furukawa, Samuel J. Bentley, Dawn L. Lavoie
Journal of Marine Research
Burrow irrigation by benthic infauna affects chemical mass transfer regimes in marine and estuarine sediments. The bioirrigation facilitates rapid exchange of solutes between oxygenated overlying water and anoxic pore water, and thus promotes biogeochemical reactions that include degradation of sedimentary organic matter and reoxidation of reduced species. A comprehensive understanding of chemical mass transfer processes in aquatic sediments thus requires a proper treatment of bioirrigation. We investigated bioirrigation processes during early diagenesis using laboratory benthic mesocosms. Bioirrigation was carried out in the mesocosms by Schizocardium sp., a funnel-feeding enteropneust hemichordate that builds and ventilates a U-shaped burrow. Interpretation of the …
Size-Selective Downward Particle Transport By Cirratulid Polychaetes, David H. Shull, Michie Yasuda
Size-Selective Downward Particle Transport By Cirratulid Polychaetes, David H. Shull, Michie Yasuda
Journal of Marine Research
The deposition of surficial sediments many centimeters below the sediment-water interface due to the reworking activities of organisms is a potentially important but easily overlooked process in marine sediments. This kind of downward particle transport is difficult to observe in the laboratory or in the field but it has important consequences for bioturbation rates and sediment geochemistry. It is also much more likely to be size dependent than other sediment-mixing mechanisms, such as conveyor-belt feeding, and may also explain some subsurface maxima observed in sediment chemical profiles. We examined the mechanisms behind downward particle transport in Boston Harbor. Laboratory observations …

Adult Macrofauna Effects On Capitella Sp. I Larval Settlement: A Laboratory Flume Study, Paul V. R. Snelgrove, Judith P. Grassle, Cheryl Ann Zimmer
Journal of Marine Research
The opportunistic, deposit-feeding polychaete Capitella sp. I is the overwhelming numerical dominant in disturbed and enriched sediments and rarely co-occurs in appreciable numbers with other abundant mud-dwelling macrofauna. Rapid colonization and population increase in organicrich sediments is typically followed by subsequent sharp decline. The mechanistic basis for these characteristics was explored in flume-flow experiments that tested whether settling Capitella sp. I larvae avoid sediments inhabited by macrofaunal adults or sediments reworked by them. The first set of experiments consisted of four treatments: conspecific adults or no adults in reworked or non-reworked sediment. Capitella sp. I settlement was significantly altered (depressed) …

Diffusion In A Lattice-Automaton Model Of Bioturbation By Small Deposit Feeders, Bernard P. Boudreau, Jae Choi, Filip Meysman, Fréderique François-Carcaillet
Journal of Marine Research
The mixing of 210Pb and tagged particles is examined in a lattice-automaton model for bioturbation containing small deposit feeders. The values of the biodiffusion coefficient, DB, calculated using typical biological parameter values, i.e., size, abundance, feeding and locomotion rates, are similar to those expected from marine sediments of a given sedimentation rate. Most biological parameters appear to exert primarily linear effects on DB values, while most nonlinearities seem to be model artifacts or failures of the assumptions in the basic DB model. The model highlights the importance of ingestion-egestion, over simple particle displacement, as an …

The Inner Game Of Teaching: What Is It And How Can It Make Us Better Teachers, Michael Schulist
The Inner Game Of Teaching: What Is It And How Can It Make Us Better Teachers, Michael Schulist
Education | Print Theses
The inner lives of teachers was researched and studied. Three key questions were the focus: 1) What is a mental peak performance state in teaching? 2) What is the value of achieving this state? 3) How can teachers attain peak performance states? Peak performance states are described as “a higher mental state” where teachers are motivated intrinsically; in this state, they are described as being “undivided”, their ‘truest selves”. Research shows that teachers are more effective when they achieve peak performance states in the classroom. Self- awareness and development of positive thought patterns are necessary skills for achieving optimum mental …

Aspects Of The Physiology Of Early Juvenile Cod (Gadus Morhua L.) And Haddock (Melanogrammus Aeglefinus L.), Myron Arms Peck
Open Access Dissertations
In this research, the effects of temperature, body size, and/or feeding level on a variety of bioenergetic parameters in early (age-0) juveniles of both Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) and haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus L.) were quantified. Bioenergetic parameters were measured at temperatures (5, 8, 12, and 15°C) experienced by field fish, using a range in fish sizes (3 to 13 cm TL) encompassing the first year of juvenile growth. In the first study, the relationship between cod and haddock growth rate (GI) and feeding-level (C) was quantified at different temperatures. The shape of the GI - C relationship and growth …
