Effects Of Experimental Diabetes And Insulin Treatment On Rabbit Renal Morphology: A Quantitative And Qualitative Study, Hüseyi̇n Eray Bulut, Bi̇lge Onarlioğlu, Celal Kaloğlu, Öztürk Özdemi̇r, Semi̇h Ayan
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Diabetes causes metabolic defects and related vascular alterations such as atherosclerosis. These vascular alterations may also reflect the renal structural degeneration under the influence of diabetes. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine qualitatively and quantitatively the effect of experimental diabetes on rabbit renal cortical structure, and also to evaluate the reversal rate of the renal structural alterations by daily insulin treatment. Eighteen rabbits, bred and fed in standard laboratory conditions, were divided into 3 groups each containing 6 animals. While control group animals received no treatment, the rest were injected with a single dose of intravenous …

Analysis Of Ras Gene Mutation In Human Oral Tumours By Polymerase Chain Reaction And Direct Sequencing, Si̇nan Süzen, James M. Parry
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Genetic alterations in proto-oncogenes or tumour suppressor genes are believed to be one of the key events in the multistage process of carcinogenesis. Activating point mutations occurring in either one of the three ras proto-oncogene families are common genetic alterations in human and animal neoplasms. However, the mechanisms leading to oral cancer are not completely understood. Activation of the ras oncogene in oral carcinogenesis, although absent or rare in the western world, accounts for up to 35% of all malignancies in India and South Asia. Recognised aetiological agents of oral cancer include tobacco and alcohol. Tobacco-associated compounds such as nitrosamines …

Bridging Connections Between Teachers' Racial Identities And Their Teaching Practices, Sandras M. Barnes
Bridging Connections Between Teachers' Racial Identities And Their Teaching Practices, Sandras M. Barnes
Educational Studies Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine how three Black female teachers and three White female teachers of kindergarten, first grade, and eighth grade understand the connections between their racial identity and their teaching practices . Specifically, it sought to understand how they experience their first awareness of racial difference and the influence their family, community, and school had on their construct of race. Also, how their preparation to teach reinforced, expanded, altered, or demystified their understanding of racial differences as a means to teach all children . The study used a phenomenologically based, lived experienced methodology to interview …

When one looks at the intellectual landscape of the modern university, at the scholarly and scientific interests of its faculty, the panorama is seamless. There are no discontinuities. The interests of physicists transmogrify into those of chemists, those of chemists into those of biologists, and so on. The lines, the divisions, between departments have been created out of administrative, not intellectual, necessity.

Internet Use Policies And Implications For Health Education: A Survey Of Nebraska School Board Presidents, David Dennison, David Corbin, Manoj Sharma, Neal Grandgenett
Teacher Education Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes and practices of school board presidents in Nebraska pertaining to Internet use policy-making and its implications on health education. This study utilized a mailed written survey. The data indicated that public school policy makers have significantly different perceptions of health education than of specific selected health education components, i.e., they are not very concerned about access to Internet health education information in general, but they are very concerned about specific areas of health education. Specifically, board presidents were most concerned about access to information about Internet sexuality followed by drug …
Making Words Sing And Dance: Sense, Style And Sound In Yoruba Prose Translation, Pamela J. Olúbùnmi Smith
Making Words Sing And Dance: Sense, Style And Sound In Yoruba Prose Translation, Pamela J. Olúbùnmi Smith
Goodrich Scholarship Faculty Publications
Ordinarily in prose translation, rhythm is usually not a matter of great concern for the translator. Unlike poetry, with its comparatively rigid form, prose, by its very nature, permits a free form fluidity, giving the translator a certain kind of carte blanche “prosaic” license. However, in language-driven texts, as is the case in the novels of Yoruba creative writer D.O. Fagunwa, the translator has to be ever mindful of the author's purposeful inter-linking of the aesthetic value of sound to the cognitive meaning of the text.
Just Being A Lawyer: Reflections On The Legal Ethics Of A President Under Impeachment, John A. Humbach
Just Being A Lawyer: Reflections On The Legal Ethics Of A President Under Impeachment, John A. Humbach
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
The core vice that Posner finds in Clinton’s efforts to contain the truth of the Lewinsky affair is very similar to a fault the public perceives in the behavior of lawyers generally. Namely, lawyers often try to obscure or distract from factual truth order to prevent the law from applying as intended. Most of this avoidance behavior is technically lawful because, for pragmatic reasons, allowances for such avoidance have been deliberately built into the criminal laws against perjury, obstruction of justice and the like. These allowances are a compromise that the law makes with morals so its criminal prohibitions will …

Sublaminar Organization Of The Adult Mouse Olfactory Bulb Nerve Layer, Winnie Wai-Yin Au
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Axons of olfactory receptor cells (ORCs) grow from the olfactory epithelium (OE) to the olfactory bulb (OB), where they travel through the olfactory nerve layer (ONL) of the OB, reorganize extensively, and innervate specific synaptic targets in the glomeruli. Within the ONL a unique population of glial cells, the olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs), surround ORC axon fascicles and accompany them to the OB. To better understand the relationship between the OECs and the axon fascicles in the ONL of the adult mouse, we used confocal microscopy and antibodies to the low affinity nerve growth factor receptor p75 (p75), glial fibrillary …

Artistry And Irony In María De Zayas's La Inocencia Castigada, Matthew D. Stroud
Artistry And Irony In María De Zayas's La Inocencia Castigada, Matthew D. Stroud
Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research
By the time Maria de Zayas published her Desengaños amorosos, the honor scenario, due in large part to the dominance of the comedia and especially of Calderón, had taken on a number of characteristics that today seem inseparable from the familiar plotlines. A noblewoman, usually innocent of adultery but loved by another man, is believed for one reason or another to have dishonored her husband. He proceeds to verify that the affront has indeed been committed, and, upon (wrongly) coming to believe that his wife is guilty, undertakes to have her killed in secret so that his honor will …

Cellular Senescence: Ex Vivo P53-Dependent Asymmetric Cell Kinetics., Lakshmi Rambhatla, Shirley A. Bohn, Patrizia B. Stadler, Jonathan T. Boyd, Ronald A. Coss, James L. Sherley
Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers
Although senescence is a defining property of euploid mammalian cells, its physiologic basis remains obscure. Previously, cell kinetics properties of normal tissue cells have not been considered in models for senescence. We now provide evidence that senescence is in fact the natural consequence of normal in vivo somatic stem cell kinetics extended in culture. This concept of senescence is based on our discovery that cells engineered to conditionally express the well-recognized tumor suppressor protein and senescence factor, p53, exhibit asymmetric cell kinetics. In vivo, asymmetric cell kinetics are essential for maintenance of somatic stem cells; ex vivo, the same cell …
Spatial Distribution Of Phosphorus In Fluvial Sediments From The James River Basin, Sw Missouri, Briain Fredrick
Spatial Distribution Of Phosphorus In Fluvial Sediments From The James River Basin, Sw Missouri, Briain Fredrick
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Degraded ·water quality in the James River Arm of Table Rock Lake, southwest Missouri has raised concerns about sources and transport of nutrients, especially phosphorus, in the James River Basin. Sections of the James River Basin have been identified as having excessive nutrient problems on the Missouri Department of Natural Resources 303d list and ranked fifth in the state for water quality improvements. Understanding the sources and transport patterns of phosphorus in the James River is necessary to evaluate contamination problems and the effectiveness of management efforts to reduce phosphorus inputs to the lake. This study uses bed sediments to …
Spatial Assessment Of Nonpoint Phosphorus Sources Using Streambed Sediment Monitoring In The Kings River Basin, Nw Arkansas, Jason W. White
Spatial Assessment Of Nonpoint Phosphorus Sources Using Streambed Sediment Monitoring In The Kings River Basin, Nw Arkansas, Jason W. White
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
This study of the Kings River Basin provides a watershed-scale assessment of streambed sediment-Phosphorus (P) and its sources on the landscape. The Kings River drains into Table Rock Lake where surface algal blooms have concerned water scientists and disrupted summer tourism. There are questions about how sediment loads, widespread poultry and cattle operations, and sewage treatment plants are affecting water quality. Previous water quality studies across the U.S. have generally evaluated watercolurnn P. In contrast, few studies have used streambed sediment monitoring to detect P levels at a watershed-scale, and none have been attempted in the Kings River Basin. Sediment …
Transition From Moderate To Excessive Wheel Running In Rats: A Function Of Access Length?, Sara B. Lattanzio
Transition From Moderate To Excessive Wheel Running In Rats: A Function Of Access Length?, Sara B. Lattanzio
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
In rats, long daily wheel access produces an escalation to excessive levels of running while short daily access results in low stable levels of running. paralleling patterns of cocaine- taking (Lattanzio et al., 2000). Experiment I explored the effects of previous running experience (Phase l) on fixture running and feeding (Phase ll). Rats with 24 h daily access in Phase I escalated wheel running to a plateau of about 7000 wheel turns per day, while rats with 2 h daily access ran at low levels (about I000 wheel turns over the final 8 days of Phase l). The 2 h …

The Effect Of Delta9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (Thc) On The Establishment And The Expression Of Place Conditioning (Rattus Norvegicus), Robert Ernest Sorge
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The place conditioning paradigm has been used to assess the antinausea potential of drugs in non-emetic animal species. The present experiments were designed to determine the potential of A9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) to alleviate both conditioned and unconditioned sickness in rats (Rattus norvegiens). The results in the present study suggest that when the place aversion is strong (Experiment 1), THC may interfere with the establishment; however when the aversion is weak (Experiments 2 and 3), THC may interfere with the expression. Also, when administered during acquisition of a strong amphetamine-induced place preference, THC also seems to interfere with the establishment of the …
