Tax Expenditures, Social Justice And Civil Rights: Expanding The Scope Of Civil Rights Laws To Apply To Tax-Exempt Charities, David A. Brennen

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

In recent years, courts have decided a number of cases in which private organizations discriminated against people based solely on their race, gender, sexual orientation, or other immutable traits. For example, in 2000, the Boy Scouts of America revoked a New Jersey man's membership in the Boy Scouts because he was gay. New Jersey's supreme court held that the Boy Scouts' action violated New Jersey's anti-discrimination law. Notwithstanding the state court's holding, the United States Supreme Court concluded that the First Amendment prevented any court from forcing the Boy Scouts to keep a gay man as a member of its …

Introduction: From Sheet Music To Mp3 Files—A Brief Perspective On Napster, Harold R. Weinberg Jan 2001

Introduction: From Sheet Music To Mp3 Files—A Brief Perspective On Napster, Harold R. Weinberg

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

The Napster case is the current cause celebre of the digital age. The story has color. It involves music-sharing technology invented by an eighteen-year-old college dropout whose high school classmates nicknamed him "The Napster" on account of his perpetually kinky hair. The story has drama. Depending on your perspective, it pits rapacious big music companies against poor and hardworking students who just want to enjoy some tunes; or it pits creative and industrious music companies seeking a fair return on their invested effort, time, and money against greedy and irreverent music thieves. And the case has importance. Music maybe intellectual …

"Under The Umbrella Of Black Civilization": A Conversation With Reginald Mcknight, Bertram D. Ashe Jan 2001

"Under The Umbrella Of Black Civilization": A Conversation With Reginald Mcknight, Bertram D. Ashe

English Faculty Publications

Talking to Reginald McKnight is like scanning an imaginary worldwide radio dial. At any given moment he can transform his pleasant speaking voice into a raspy, aged, Middle Eastern-by-way-of-New York accent - or a deep Southern drawl. In an instant he can switch from a precise West African dialect to hip, urban street lingo, and then effortlessly segue back to his normal voice. McKnight says he "hit the ground running" as a mimic, and his talent was broadened as he lived all over the United States as the son of an Air Force sergeant. His time spent on the road …

An Examination Of The Sabbatical Year In Leviticus 25 And Its Implications For Academic Practice, Thomas G. Endres

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

First, the article examines the sabbatical year as portrayed in the Hebrew scriptures. Next, definitions and practices of the sabbatical year in academia is outlined. Finally, connections between the two forms of sabbatical is analyzed, with conclusions drawn about the role the Leviticus sabbatical can play in the understanding and execution of academic leave. While the purpose of the academic sabbatical year is quite different, academicians can learn from the lessons of Leviticus, and approach their leaves of absence with a more …

Prostasin Is A Glycosylphosphatidylinositol-Anchored Active Serine Protease, Li-Mei Chen, Melanie L. Skinner, Steven W. Kauffman, Julie Chao, Lee Chao, Catherine D. Thaler, Karl X. Chai

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

A recombinant human prostasin serine protease was expressed in several human cell lines. Subcellular fractionation showed that this serine protease is synthesized as a membrane-bound protein while a free-form prostasin is secreted into the culture medium, Prostasin was identified in nuclear and membrane fractions. Membrane-bound prostasin can be released by phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C treatment, or labeled by [H-3]ethanolamine, indicating a glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchorage. A prostasin-binding protein was identified in mouse and human seminal vesicle fluid. Both the secreted and the membrane-bound prostasin were able to form a covalently linked 82-kDa complex when incubated with seminal vesicle fluid. The complex formation between …

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Paleotopographic reconstructions based on a synthesis of published geologic information and high-resolution topography, including topographic profiles, reveal the potential existence of an enormous drainage basin/aquifer system in the eastern part of the Tharsis region during the Noachian Period. Large topographic highs formed the margin of the gigantic drainage basin. Subsequently, lavas, sediments, and volatiles partly infilled the basin, resulting in an enormous and productive regional aquifer. The stacked sequences of water-bearing strata were then deformed locally and, in places, exposed by magmatic-driven uplifts, tectonic deformation, and erosion. This basin model provides a potential source of water necessary to carve the …

Cervantes And The Reinvention Of The Picaresque Narrative In The Novelas Ejemplares, Mark J. Mascia Jan 2001

Cervantes And The Reinvention Of The Picaresque Narrative In The Novelas Ejemplares, Mark J. Mascia

Languages Faculty Publications

This article presents an analysis of a number of stories in Miguel de Cervantes' Novelas Ejemplares, illustrating how he experimented with and altered the picaresque narrative by openly incorporating many elements of the genre into this work. This article shows how Cervantes is not a purely canonical picaresque author, but rather a quasi- or semi-picaresque writer, inventing what might be called Cervantine picaresque literature.

Developing A Viable Intranet Site, Wendy C, Glidden Jan 2001

Developing A Viable Intranet Site, Wendy C, Glidden

Theses

This thesis will focus on establishing consistent guidelines in developing a successful corporate intranet website.

Office intranets are often neglected due to popularity of electronic commerce, and the company's investment in their public website. Standard instructions on how to develop a viable intranet site are not easily found and not likely taught.

With intranet development being a relatively new field, site expectations are very subjective. A site's perceived correctness largely depends on specific goals an organization has established for its site. There are generally high expectations and low budgets for intranets and if usability goals are not kept close at …

A Directorial View Of Tennessee Williams' Suddenly Last Summer, John Vullo Jan 2001

A Directorial View Of Tennessee Williams' Suddenly Last Summer, John Vullo

Theses

The nucleus of my thesis will be the direction of "Suddenly Last Summer'', by Tennessee Williams. This play will be performed under my direction for The St. Charles Theatre Company on October 27 and 28, November 3 and 4, 2000. "Suddenly Last Summer'' was first introduced to the public at the York Theatre, in New York City, on January 7, 1958.

It is my intent to present my own interpretation of this play and document my process of directing it in a community theatre environment. This becomes even more interesting to me because, although the St. Charles Theatre Company has …

Fictional Teeth, Linda Dyer Jan 2001

Fictional Teeth, Linda Dyer

Ahsahta Press

In her debut volume Fictional Teeth, Linda Dyer sorted out the world by pinpointing the unexpected connections that help it make sense, and turns the run-on tumbling syntax of an excited child into the medium for poems that first amuse, then haunt the reader. Venturing the territories of family and loss, persistence and hope, Dyer’s voice is wry and inventive in these poems, where a crayfish can be a child’s pet, a lover’s makeshift ashtray an erotic lure, office supplies a convenient resource for makeovers.

Effects Of Experimental Diabetes And Insulin Treatment On Rabbit Renal Morphology: A Quantitative And Qualitative Study, Hüseyi̇n Eray Bulut, Bi̇lge Onarlioğlu, Celal Kaloğlu, Öztürk Özdemi̇r, Semi̇h Ayan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Diabetes causes metabolic defects and related vascular alterations such as atherosclerosis. These vascular alterations may also reflect the renal structural degeneration under the influence of diabetes. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine qualitatively and quantitatively the effect of experimental diabetes on rabbit renal cortical structure, and also to evaluate the reversal rate of the renal structural alterations by daily insulin treatment. Eighteen rabbits, bred and fed in standard laboratory conditions, were divided into 3 groups each containing 6 animals. While control group animals received no treatment, the rest were injected with a single dose of intravenous …
