An Integrative Hierarchical Framework For Environmental Valuation: Value Pluralism, Thresholds, And Deliberation, Randall S. Rosenberger Jan 2001

An Integrative Hierarchical Framework For Environmental Valuation: Value Pluralism, Thresholds, And Deliberation, Randall S. Rosenberger

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

When assessing people’s values for the natural environment, a variety of methodological approaches may be required. This is because value pluralism negates the ability to reduce the various kinds of values to a single conception of value or super-value. Environmental valuation endeavors are defined by the question to be answered. However, for some people, the methodology employed may conflict with their perception of the issue and what values are most important to them, i.e., the methods employed are not globally incentive compatible with all modes of expressing one’s values. Therefore, any single disciplinary approach to environmental valuation may ignore these …

The Genetics Of Reproductive Isolation And The Potential For Gene Exchange Between Drosophila Pseudoobscura And D. Persimilis Via Backcross Hybrid Males, Mohamed A.F. Noor, Katherine L. Grams, Lisa A. Bertucci, Yvette Almendarez, Jane Reiland, Kelley R. Smith Jan 2001

Smith

Faculty Publications

Hybrid male sterility, hybrid inviability, sexual isolation, and a hybrid male courtship dysfunction reproductively isolate Drosophila pseudoobscura and D. persimilis. Previous studies of the genetic bases of these isolating mechanisms have yielded only limited information about how much and what areas of the genome are susceptible to interspecies introgression. We have examined the genetic basis of these barriers to gene exchange in several thousand backcross hybrid male progeny of these species using 14 codominant molecular genetic markers spanning the five chromosomes of these species, focusing particularly on the autosomes. Hybrid male sterility, hybrid inviability, and the hybrid male courtship dysfunction …

Estimating The Unbiased Estimator Θ For Population Genetic Survey Data, Jacqueline J. Weicker, Robb T. Brumfield, Kevin Winker Jan 2001

Estimating The Unbiased Estimator Θ For Population Genetic Survey Data, Jacqueline J. Weicker, Robb T. Brumfield, Kevin Winker

Faculty Publications

We consider a method of approximating Weir and Cockerham's θ, an unbiased estimator of genetic population structure, using values readily available from published studies using biased estimators (Wright's FST or Nei's GST). The estimation algorithm is shown to be useful for both model populations and real-world avian populations. However, the correlation between Wright's FST and Weir and Cockerham's θ is strong when compared among 39 empirical avian datasets. Thus, the advantage of approximating an unbiased estimator is unclear considering the small actual effect of θ's bias-removing power on empirical datasets.

Sexual Selection On Plumage And Behavior In An Avian Hybrid Zone: Experimental Tests Of Male-Male Interactions, David B. Mcdonald, Robert P. Clay, Robb T. Brumfield, Michael J. Braun Jan 2001

Sexual Selection On Plumage And Behavior In An Avian Hybrid Zone: Experimental Tests Of Male-Male Interactions, David B. Mcdonald, Robert P. Clay, Robb T. Brumfield, Michael J. Braun

Faculty Publications

In western Panama, an unusual hybrid zone exists between white-collared manakins, Manacus candei, and golden-collared manakins, M. vitellinus. Unidirectional introgression of plumage traits from vitellinus into candei has created a region in which all definitively plumaged males have a collar that is lemon-colored. These males are nearly indistinguishable from white-collared candei genetically and morphometrically, but strongly resemble golden-collared vitellinus due to the introgression of secondary sexual plumage traits, particularly the lemon-colored collar. The introgression could be explained by sexual selection for golden-collared traits or by a series of mechanisms that do not invoke sexual selection (e.g., neutral diffusion, dominant allele). …

Effect Of Sweetpotato Genotype, Storage Time And Production Site On Feeding And Oviposition Behavior Of The Sweetpotato Weevil, Cylas Formicarius (Coleoptera: Apoinidae), L. Mao, R. N. Story, A. M. Hammond, D. R. Labonte Jan 2001

Effect Of Sweetpotato Genotype, Storage Time And Production Site On Feeding And Oviposition Behavior Of The Sweetpotato Weevil, Cylas Formicarius (Coleoptera: Apoinidae), L. Mao, R. N. Story, A. M. Hammond, D. R. Labonte

Faculty Publications

The effect of sweetpotato genotype, storage time and production site on Cylas formicarius (Fab.) feeding and oviposition was investigated. Sweetpotato genotype had a significant effect on feeding and oviposition rates in both no-choice and choice arenas. Beauregard and Centennial were uniformly susceptible across all age groups. W-250 had the least number of feeding punctures and eggs at 7 and 25 days after harvest. At 85 days after harvest, W-244 had the least number of feeding punctures and eggs, while W-250 was not significantly different from Beauregard and Centennial. Roots of the same genotype grown in different locations differed in the …

The Asymptotic Equivalence Of The Fisher Information Matrices For Type I And Type Ii Censored Data From Location-Scale Families, Luis A. Escobar, William Q. Meeker Jan 2001

The Asymptotic Equivalence Of The Fisher Information Matrices For Type I And Type Ii Censored Data From Location-Scale Families, Luis A. Escobar, William Q. Meeker

Faculty Publications

Type I and Type II censored data arise frequently in controlled laboratory studies concerning time to a particular event (e.g., death of an animal or failure of a physical device). Log-location-scale distributions (e.g., Weibull, log-normal, and loglogistic) are commonly used to model the resulting data. Maximum likelihood (ML) is generally used to obtain parameter estimates when the data are censored. The Fisher information matrix can be used to obtain large-sample approximate variances and covariances of the ML estimates or to estimate these variances and covariances from data. The derivations of the Fisher information matrix proceed differently for Type I (time …

Differential Detection Of Bartonella Species And Strains In Cat Scratch Disease Diagnostics By Polymerase Chain Reaction Amplification Of 16s Ribosomal Rna Gene, Ronald A. Tapp, Alma F. Roy, Richard E. Corstvet, Vincent L. Wilson Jan 2001

Differential Detection Of Bartonella Species And Strains In Cat Scratch Disease Diagnostics By Polymerase Chain Reaction Amplification Of 16s Ribosomal Rna Gene, Ronald A. Tapp, Alma F. Roy, Richard E. Corstvet, Vincent L. Wilson

Faculty Publications

Cat scratch disease (CSD) has been difficult to diagnose in animals because of the protracted clinical course of infection and the quiescent phases when the microbial culprit lies dormant. The causative agent in CSD appears to be multiple species and strains of Bartonella. Using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques for amplification of highly variable regions of the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequence, a very sensitive species- and strain-specific assay for CSD-causing Bartonella species was developed. PCR primers were designed to specifically amplify the 16S rRNA gene of Bartonella species but not of other microbial pathogens. This initial PCR was …

Co-Involvement Of Mitochondria And Endoplasmic Reticulum In Regulation Of Apoptosis: Changes In Cytochrome C, Bcl-2 And Bax In The Hippocampus Of Aluminum-Treated Rabbits, David A. Dewitt, Othman Ghribi, Michael S. Forbes, Mary M. Herman, John Savory Jan 2001

Herman, John Savory

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, are characterized by a progressive and selective loss of neurons. Apoptosis under mitochondrial control has been implicated in this neuronal death process, involving the release of cytochrome c into the cytoplasm and initiation of the apoptosis cascade. However, a growing body of evidence suggests an active role for the endoplasmic reticulum in regulating apoptosis, either independent of mitochondrial, or in concert with mitochondrial-initiated pathways. Members of the Bcl-2 family of proteins have been shown to either inhibit apoptosis, as is the case with Bcl-2, or to promote it, in the case of Bax. Investigations in …

All Suffer The Affliction Of The One: Metaphysical Holism And The Presence Of The Spirit, Brad Kallenberg Jan 2001

All Suffer The Affliction Of The One: Metaphysical Holism And The Presence Of The Spirit, Brad Kallenberg

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

When Copernicus and Galileo proposed that the earth circled the sun and not the 217 other way around, Christian believers faced the difficult prospect of surrendering a long-held belief that had seemingly undeniable support from the biblical text. After all, Joshua reported that the sun, not the earth, stood still; what could this mean if not that the sun orbited the earth? Today, centuries later, believers unanimously hold a heliocentric view of the solar system and are somewhat embarrassed by the ignorance of our pre-Enlightenment brothers and sisters. Ironically, however, such embarrassment masks the possibility that we ourselves may one …

Distinguishing The Concept Of Strict Liability For Ultra-Hazardous Activities From Strict Products Liability Under Section 402a Of The Restatement (Second) Of Torts: Two Parallel Lines Of Reasoning That Should Never Meet, Charles E. Cantú Jan 2001

Distinguishing The Concept Of Strict Liability For Ultra-Hazardous Activities From Strict Products Liability Under Section 402a Of The Restatement (Second) Of Torts: Two Parallel Lines Of Reasoning That Should Never Meet, Charles E. Cantú

Faculty Articles

Strict liability for ultra-hazardous activities is entirely different from strict products liability. Since strict liability has been applied to so-called dangerous or ultra-hazardous activities, the application has been limited to instances where the defendant has, for his own purpose, created an abnormal risk of harm to those surrounding him, and therefore should pay for any resulting injury. Section 520 of the Restatement (Second) of Torts explains how one weighs the risk of harm emanating from ultra-hazardous activities against the appropriateness to its surroundings. This is not, however, how one determines the applicability of strict liability in the area of defective …
