Judging "New Law" In Election Disputes, Richard H. Pildes
Judging "New Law" In Election Disputes, Richard H. Pildes
Faculty Articles
In disputed presidential and other elections, what is the appropriate relationship between state law and state institutions versus national law and national institutions? What does the constitutional law of elections, prior to the 2000 presidential election, tell us about how that relationship has long been legally understood? This broader jurisprudence of elections offers a more general, external stance from which disputes over this relationship surrounding Bush v. Gore can be helpfully assessed.
Processing And Conservation Of The Grain Of Corn (Zea Mays L.) And Project Of Industrial Feasibility, Marina Caballero Bautista
Processing And Conservation Of The Grain Of Corn (Zea Mays L.) And Project Of Industrial Feasibility, Marina Caballero Bautista
Theses and Dissertations
Since Pre-Colombian time corn already formed part of the diet in Aztec and Mayan cultures, and actually represented in them a fountain of wealth and power. The cultivation is utilized in the region in multiple forms, not only for the human diet, but also as feed for animals. Corn is third place in the world production, following wheat and rice. It is cultivated in a total surface of 106 million hectares, its yield is 215 million tons, that represents an average of 2 tons per hectare. The cultivation of corn has special importance, given that this cereal constitutes the basic …

Horse Maiming In The English Countryside: Moral Panic, Human Deviance, And The Social Construction Of Victimhood, Roger Yates, Chris Powell, Piers Beirne
Department of Criminology
The societal reaction to a series of horse assaults in rural Hampshire during the 1990s was a rare example of a moral panic about crime and deviance in which animals other than humans occupy, or seemed to occupy the central role of victim. This paper explores how the nature of the relationships between humans and animals is revealed through authoritative utterances about offenders and victims by the mass media, the police, and the humans who felt they had a stake in the horses' well-being. Analysis of how and when victimhood is ascribed to animals helps to uncover the invisible assaults …

Agathon, Essentialism, And Gender Subversion In Aristophanes' Thesmophoriazusae, Anne Duncan
Agathon, Essentialism, And Gender Subversion In Aristophanes' Thesmophoriazusae, Anne Duncan
Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
In Aristophanes' Thesmophoriazusae, the women of Athens, infuriated by Euripides' too-accurate portrayals of lustful and treacherous women, are plotting against him. Euripides and his kinsman come up with a plan to dress the kinsman in women's clothes and send him into the women's meeting as a spy. In order to dress the kinsman up, they stop at the house of Agathon, a notoriously effeminate tragic playwright, and ask to borrow some of his women's clothing and personal grooming items. The "robing scene” with Agathon has often been taken to be a straightforward, if devastating, mockery of a historical figure's peculiarities. …

Undegradable Intake Protein Supplementation Of Compensating, Grazing Steers, Kelly Creighton, Mark Ullerich, Terry J. Klopfenstein
Undegradable Intake Protein Supplementation Of Compensating, Grazing Steers, Kelly Creighton, Mark Ullerich, Terry J. Klopfenstein
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
A trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of previous winter gain on response to undegradable intake protein (UIP) supplementation during the summer grazing period. Steers wintered at the FAST rate of gain had a greater response to UIP supplementation than steers with SLOW rate of gain. Maximum response for FAST cattle occurred at 150 g/d of supplemental UIP, while SLOW cattle showed no response through 150 g/d. Forage DM intake was similar for FAST and SLOW cattle, therefore SLOW cattle consumed more as a percentage of body weight. Increased gains from UIP supplementation were not maintained during the finishing …
Genetic And Molecular Analysis Of Islet-And Liver-Enriched Transcription Factors In Metabolism And Development, David Quan Shih
Genetic And Molecular Analysis Of Islet-And Liver-Enriched Transcription Factors In Metabolism And Development, David Quan Shih
Student Theses and Dissertations
Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) are monogenic forms of type 2 diabetes that are characterized by an early disease-onset, autosomal dominant inheritance, and defects in insulin secretion. Genetic studies have identified mutations in at least six genes associated with different forms of MODY. The majority of the MODY subtypes are caused by mutations in transcription factors that include hepatocyte nuclear factor (HNF)-4α, HNF-1α, PDX-1, HNF-1β, and NEURO-D1/BETA-2. In addition, genetic defects in the glucokinase gene, the glucose sensor of the pancreatic β-cells, and the insulin gene also lead to impaired glucose tolerance. Using molecular and genetic approaches, we demonstrated …
Interactions Between Nova And Brptb Proteins In Alternative Splicing And Nuclear Localization, Alexandros Demetrios Polydorides
Interactions Between Nova And Brptb Proteins In Alternative Splicing And Nuclear Localization, Alexandros Demetrios Polydorides
Student Theses and Dissertations
The Nova paraneoplastic antigens are neuron-specific RNA-binding proteins that are essential for neuronal viability and participate in the control of alternative splicing. In this study, the yeast two-hybrid system is used to isolate Nova-1nteracting proteins. A novel RNA-binding protein named brPTB is identified, that is closely related to the polypyrimidine tract-binding protein (PTB) and is ennched in the brain at the mRNA and protein levels. brPTB interacts with Nova proteins in vitro and in vivo. Splicing assays in kidney epithelial cell lines show that brPTB inhibits the effect of Noval in the inclusion of alternatively spliced exons in two target …
Impact Of Thymectomy On The Peripheral T Cell Pool In The Context Of Siv Infection, Sarah Tuttleton Arron
Impact Of Thymectomy On The Peripheral T Cell Pool In The Context Of Siv Infection, Sarah Tuttleton Arron
Student Theses and Dissertations
The thymus is the primary lymphoid organ responsible for T cell production. It is of particular interest in the context of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 infection, in which the progressive loss of CD4+ T cells leads to immunodeficiency and opportunistic infection. CD4+ T cell loss is thought to result from direct and indirect killing of CD4 cells in the periphery as well as from pathogenic effects of the virus on the thymus. However, it is not fully understood which is the greater factor in viral-induced CD4+ T cell decay. The development of an assay to detect T cell receptor excisional …
Genetic Studies On The Circadian Clock In The Model Organism Drosophila Melanogaster, Sebastian Martinek
Genetic Studies On The Circadian Clock In The Model Organism Drosophila Melanogaster, Sebastian Martinek
Student Theses and Dissertations
Although the basic neural mechanism that regulates circadian behavior in Drosophila is known in quite some detail, several aspects of this biological process still remain to be elucidated. In this study a variety of genetic and molecular approaches was used to identify and characterize genes that are involved in circadian rhythms and that may shed light on the gaps in the model. In an F1 screen for altered period length of the circadian locomotor activity cycle the new mutation 2ob9 was isolated. Cloning and sequencing identified the affected gene as a Drosophila homolog of the yeast RNA helicase and splicing …
Emerging Auditory Selectivity In The Caudomedial Neostriatum Of The Zebra Finch Songbird, Caroline Wan-Yin Ang
Emerging Auditory Selectivity In The Caudomedial Neostriatum Of The Zebra Finch Songbird, Caroline Wan-Yin Ang
Student Theses and Dissertations
The ability to identify and interpret auditory stimuli from the environmental milieu is of particular importance in species that communicate using learned vocalizations. By chronically recording multiunit neuronal responses in awake, behaving zebra finch songbirds, I have demonstrated that the caudomedial neostriatum (NCM), a telencephalic nucleus in the ascending auditory pathway, exhibits responses that range from unselective to highly selective for species-specific stimuli. Sites demonstrating habituating responses are also found and are arranged heterogeneously with selective sites that do not habituate. During the act of singing, activity changes at the habituating sites becoming nonhabituating with neuronal firing occurring at distinct …
Antigenic Variation And Telomere Structure In Trypanosoma Brucei, Jorge Luis Munoz Jordan
Antigenic Variation And Telomere Structure In Trypanosoma Brucei, Jorge Luis Munoz Jordan
Student Theses and Dissertations
Trypanosoma brucei survives immune attack in its mammalian hosts by periodically changing the variant surface glycoprotein (VSG). From the ~1000 VSG genes (VSGs) scattered throughout the genome, a few are located at telomere loci called expression sites (ESs) and only one is expressed at any time, suggesting a stringent regulatory mechanism. Here, it is demonstrated that trypanosomes engineered to express two VSGs simultaneously from the same ES can multiply in cultures and infect animals normally. Mechanisms involved in the control ES-associated gene expression are thought to involve some kind of telomere position effect. Telomeres typically contain simple DNA repeats (TTAGGG …
Functional Analysis Of The Human Telomeric Protein Trf2, Agata Smogorzewska
Functional Analysis Of The Human Telomeric Protein Trf2, Agata Smogorzewska
Student Theses and Dissertations
TTAGGG Repeat Binding Factor 2 (TRF2) is a ubiquitous human telomeric protein present at all telomeres throughout the cell cycle. TRF2 has been proposed remodel telomeres into large lasso-like structures named t-loops. Removal of TRF2 from telomeres by expression of a dominant negative allele of TRF2 (TRF2ΔBΔM) led dissolution of these structures and appearance of end-to-end fusions visible in metaphase and anaphase cells. Fusion formation was accompanied by the loss of Goverhang, but not by the loss of double stranded telomeric DNA, which can be documented to persist at the sites of fusions. Fusions were covalent and their formation was …
The Affordable Prescription Drugs Act: A Solution For Today's High Prescription Drug Prices , John D. Pinzone
The Affordable Prescription Drugs Act: A Solution For Today's High Prescription Drug Prices , John D. Pinzone
Journal of Law and Health
This article will discuss a recently proposed bill, The Affordable Prescription Drugs Act (APDA), and how it will attempt to strike a balance between reducing prices to make essential drugs more available and affordable, and working with pharmaceutical companies to make sure they profit and invest their money into research and development of new essential drugs. It argues that the APDA increases competition in the market place, thus reducing the price of prescription drugs, while still allowing pharmaceutical companies to profit from their inventions. In reaching this conclusion this article examines the bill itself, how to define an essential drug, …
The Right To Kill In Cold Blood: Does The Death Penalty Violate Human Rights, Alan Ryan
The Right To Kill In Cold Blood: Does The Death Penalty Violate Human Rights, Alan Ryan
Cleveland State Law Review
The essence of the argument is this: all punishment must be inflicted in cold blood; whatever damage we do to others not in cold blood is not punishment but self-defense or revenge; what we have a right to inflict in cold blood is a question of the rules of just social cooperation and especially the justice of the sanctions required to sustain those rules; it is here argued that the fundamental principle is that we may inflict whatever punishment is necessary to deter wrongdoing and not disproportionate to the offence; I do not dismiss 'pure' retribution as a goal of …

Antipredator Response Of Red-Backed Salamanders (Plethodon Cinereus) To Chemical Cues From Garter Snakes (Thamnophis Sirtalis) Laboratory And Field Experiments, Aaron M. Sullivan, John C. Maerz, Dale M. Madison
Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science
Recent laboratory studies show that terrestrial salamanders exhibit anti-predatory behavior in response to chemical cues from predators, but no studies have confirmed these results in the field where environmental and social factors may influence responses. We examined the character and duration of anti-predator behavior of red-backed salamanders (Plethodon cinereus) exposed to control stimuli and chemical cues from garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis) in evening laboratory and field trials. In the laboratory, P. cinereus significantly avoided snake rinse for 36 h. In the field, P. cinereus exposed to the same cues delayed emergence from refugia for 2 h, …

Heat Shock Proteins And Osmotic Shock In Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar), Feng Pan
Heat Shock Proteins And Osmotic Shock In Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar), Feng Pan
Open Access Dissertations
Heat shock proteins are molecular chaperones. Atlantic salmon is a major aquaculture species in the world, their anadromous nature made them encounter osmotic shock twice in the life cycle. Salmon prior treated with a mild thermal shock observed a significantly higher survival rate upon transfer to hyperosmotic seawater than control fish. Heat shock protein 70 was prominently induced and persisted up to 24 hours after initial heat shock. Fish with prior heat shock treatment exhibited significant higher rate of protein synthesis over control after transfer to seawater. Hsp90 is known to enhance the fidelity of glucocorticoid hormone and receptors. Northern …
Analysis Of A Proposed Model For Detection Of Magnetic Fields By Biological Systems, Su-Hsiu Wu
Analysis Of A Proposed Model For Detection Of Magnetic Fields By Biological Systems, Su-Hsiu Wu
Open Access Dissertations
Numerous reports have indicated that some biological effects of relatively weak alternating magnetic fields depend upon the presence and magnitude of a parallel-directed static magnetic field. One explanation of these phenomena is parametric resonance mechanism, originally proposed by Lednev and also applied in modified form by Blackman and Blanchard. The mechanism, as formulated by Lednev, involves the Zeeman splitting of infrared vibration levels of Ca2+ ions within proteins such as calmodulin. It is shown that this model can be formulated using mostly classical physics. In this formulation the linear vibration path of an oscillating ion is set into uniform rotation …
