Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
In considering how curriculum and teaching influence education, it is revealing to note that most faculty members treat curriculum the way bankers treat investments. They generally spend much time, planning, and careful thought on curricular matters-reasoning here, analyzing there, relying on experience, and carefully considering both the long-term and short-term dividends of knowledge - but when it comes to teaching, many faculty members operate less like bankers and more like barnstormers, flying by the seat of their pants and guiding themselves primarily by instinct or by repeating whatever worked yesterday.

Year Of The Living Dead: California Breathes New Life Into Celebrity Publicity Rights, Rhett H. Laurens
UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal
The use of images of deceased actors in film has become increasingly controversial in recent years. Advances in digital imaging technology have made it possible to manipulate these images to such an extent that it will soon be feasible to produce films in which they play leading roles. The lack of legal protections available to the deceased actors' heirs, who want the rights to control the use of the actors' images for both creative and economic reasons, prompted Fred Astaire's widow and other Hollywood celebrities to push for passage of the Astaire Celebrity Image Protection Act. Signed into law in …

The Hydrology And Water Quality Of Select Springs In The Southwest Florida Water Management District, Roberta Starks, Kyle M. Champion
KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports
Report prepared by the Water Quality Monitoring Program of the Southwest Florida Water Management District (May 2001). This report, entitled The Hydrology and Water Quality of Springs in west-central Florida, combines and condenses into one document a wealth of information collected during previous water-quality studies performed by the Water Quality Monitoring Program (WQMP) at the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD). The report is designed to present the reader with an up-to-date catalog of some of the larger and better known springs within the District, summarize nearly 10 years of research conducted on springs, and provide a detailed description of …

Do Naked Goby (Gobiosoma Bosci) Larvae Exhibit Periodic Vertical Movements In Order To Facilitate Upriver Migration In The Hudson River Estuary?, Megan C. Fencil, Eric T. Schultz
EEB Articles
Estuaries provide high quality nursery habitat for larval fishes due to high productivity, predator protection, and warm temperatures. Previous studies suggest that larval naked gobies (Gobiosoma bosci) are capable of upriver migration and estuarine retention despite net seaward flow. Gobiosoma bosci larvae were collected at a fixed site in the Hudson River estuary in late July of 1998 from 4 discrete depths to provide a time-series of depth-stratified abundance during both a spring and a neap tide. Larvae were concentrated at depth, indicating that depth preference behavior is present and will likely contribute to up-river transport. Harmonic regression …

Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications
In the threatening winter of 1861, as the United States was being ~ inched ever- closer td the outbreak of civil war by the secession of the Southern states over the issue of black slavery, the newly elected president, Abraham Lincoln, opened up a confidential correspondence with a f6rmer Southern political colleague, Alexander Stephens of Georgia. Stephens had made headlines in November 1860, in a speech to the Georgia legislature, urging Georgia not to follow tlie South into secession. Lincoln sent him a friendly note, asking- for a printed copy of the speech-and perhaps warming Stephens to an invitation to …

Phospholipase D1 As A Regulator Of Morphogenesis In Candida Albicans, Carol Anne Baker
Phospholipase D1 As A Regulator Of Morphogenesis In Candida Albicans, Carol Anne Baker
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Phospholipase D (PLD) enzymes play significant roles in phospholipid metabolism, secretion, and lipid signal transduction. The yeast Candida albicans possesses a PLD activity that is designated PLD1. This enzyme has been implicated in the regulation of dimorphic transition. In vivo assays using sphinganine, propranolol, and staurosporine were used to test the importance of phosphatidic acid (PA) and diacylglycerol (DAG), two downstream products of PLDI activity. A concentration of 5 µM sphinganine was sufficient to decrease the appearance of germ tubes with no effect on culture doubling times. However, at higher concentrations sphinganine was inhibitory to cell growth. Propranolol concentrations up …

Marya Zaturenska's Depression Diary 1933-1935, Mary Beth Hinton
The Courier
IN THE DEPRESSION-ERA DIARY of the poet Marya Zaturenska (1902-1982), one meets many of the most influential writers and artists ofthe time: there is Archibald MacLeish at a literary tea, Edward Hopper at the Whitney Museum, Dorothy Parker at a political meeting, T. S. Eliot and Herbert Read at dinner in London. Figures from a more distant past often appear in Zaturenska's insightful commentary on the books she is reading. To her diary, now at Syracuse, she also confides her literary hopes and struggles, her exquisite aesthetic perceptions, her maternal feelings, and her overwhelming anxieties about money, health, and the …
