The Role Of Witnessing In Performance Ethnography, Dennis M. Doyle
The Role Of Witnessing In Performance Ethnography, Dennis M. Doyle
Iowa Journal of Communication
Central connections between performance studies theory with current practices in ethnographic fieldwork are giving rise to new ways of understanding all aspects of the performance process. Performance ethnography weaves together traditional methods of theatrical production with emerging new understandings of ethnographic fieldwork. The intersection of methodologies introduces new accountabilities and responsibilities for performance participants. The term witness, for example, may offer explanatory power when discussing the altered roles and accountabilities of participants within performance ethnography. This essay explores different applications of the term witness, placing these applications in dialogue to determine the potential witnessing holds for describing the kind of …

Life And Times Of Individuals With Mental Retardation: 40 Years Of History, Rhonda S. Black Ph.D., Beverly A. Salas
Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education
If we look to the not so distant past, we see a history of lost opportunities for employment and the chance to meaningfully contribute to society for individuals with mental retardation (Murphy & Rogan, 1995). Many issues surround why these individuals have not been more included within our society, particularly in the employment sector. Fears, questions, and concerns abound when looking at these issues. Such questions are: Why would I want to hire an individual with mental retardation? How much cost is associated with various accommodations that may be required? What unknowns are involved in hiring a person with mental …
Effects Of Improved Fallows On The Diversity Of Plant-Parasitic Nematodes In The Agroforestry Systems Of Western Kenya, Tacko Serigne Kandji
Effects Of Improved Fallows On The Diversity Of Plant-Parasitic Nematodes In The Agroforestry Systems Of Western Kenya, Tacko Serigne Kandji
All PhD Dissertations
In recent years, fast growing nitrogen-fixing shrubs of the family Fabaceae, Sesbania sesban (L.) Merr., Crotalaria grahamiana Wight & Arn. and Tephrosia vogelii Hook. f., have been intensively used in western Kenya to improve soil fertility, control soil erosion and increase crop yield. Local farmers have recognised the benefits of rotating these plant species with crops, and this has facilitated the rapid spread of this improved fallow technology in the area. Research has been conducted to understand the implications of this new land use system vis-a-vis the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the soil. The scope of this study …

Genetic Diversity In Banana Weevil Cosmopolites Sordidus, Populations In Banana Growing Regions Of The World, Vincent Oduol Ochieng
All PhD Dissertations
Genetic variability in banana weevil populations was analyzed in a large number of samples obtained from 15 banana growing tropical countries using random amplified polymorphism DNA (RAPD). A total of 46 RAPD markers were studied. Within polymorphism as measured by percentage of polymorphic RAPDs, varied between 78.3% and 97.8%. Genetic variability was measured using Shannon's information index and partitioned into between and within populations components. Overall, genetic variation among C. sordidus populations was (Hsp-Hpop)/ Hsp = 25.3%. The genetic diversity for the species (Hsp) was 83.4%. Mean of within population value (Hpop) for all populations was 62.3%. The total genetic …

Integration Of Depth Data Onto A Video Camera Backpack For Use With California Sea Lions, Sarah Ann Radloff
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Instrumentation attached to captive marine mammals for open ocean research is an innovative and valuable approach for studying marine mammals in the wild. Direct real-time underwater observations are still needed for a variety of research projects. The goal of this project was to develop and test a system for recording and playback of sea lion dive depth data using the audio channel of an underwater video camera. A pressure transducer was installed into an aluminum waterproof camera housing. A signal conditioning circuit was built to translate pressure (depth) signals into audio signals that could be recorded on the audio channel …

Highlights Of Drought Policy And Related Science In Australia And The U.S.A., David H. White, Donald A. Wilhite, Bruce O’Meagher, Graeme L. Hammer
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Patterns of water supply and use in Australia and the U.S.A. differ in many ways. This results in different perceptions concerning the nature of drought and policy approaches to its management. This paper discusses the differences and similarities and explores lessons that policy makers in both countries can learn from one another. A key difference between the two countries is that whereas drought is perceived in Australia essentially in terms of its impact on agriculture, in the U.S. both perceptions and policy are also heavily influenced by the impact of drought on urban communities. This has led to different policy …

Natural Fertility In Whooping Cranes And Mississippi Sandhill Cranes At Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Jane M. Nicolich, George F. Gee, David H. Ellis, Scott G. Hereford
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
The first fertile whooping crane (Grus americana; WC) egg produced through natural breeding at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (patuxent) was laid in 1991. Prior to that time, all fertile whooping crane eggs were the result of artificial insemination. Since 1991, eight different whooping crane pairs at Patuxent have produced fertile eggs through natural breeding. Mean fertility averages over years for each pair range from 40% to 93%. Fertility rates for each pair also vary greatly between years, from 0% to 100%, but the causes of the variance are unknown. Experiences with natural fertility in Mississippi sandhill cranes (G …

Counting Cranes: How Much Effort Is Enough?, Douglas H. Johnson, Roderick C. Drewien, Douglas S. Benning
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
Accurate population estimates of sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) are important because management decisions, such as establishing hunting regulations, are based on those estimates. Counts often are made during aerial surveys when the cranes are congregated. A complete census may be feasible if the area to be surveyed is small and adequate resources are available. For large areas, resources may be inadequate for a census so partial counts (sample surveys) are made. Because cranes are gregarious, the counts in a sample of units may contain either a disproportionately large, or a disproportionately small, fraction of the total, leading to …

Beyond Skills To Meaning: Artists As Healers And Implications For Art Educators, Lucinda Lee Blackstone
Beyond Skills To Meaning: Artists As Healers And Implications For Art Educators, Lucinda Lee Blackstone
Theses Digitization Project
Art definitions and movements are changing just as the social paradigms they spring from. This exploration looked at paradigms in art of the past that have become the foundation for movements today. Currently the transformative powers art has to offer have been recognized. Colleges are beginning to train a major and a career. The literature review explored what role transformative art has played in artists' lives and looked at its uses in education. Conceptual art goes beyond the aesthetics of art and touches the mind and heart. I began to explore this kind of art in the nearby galleries. I …
