Integrating Environmental Education Into The Curriculum Through Environmental Community Service Learning, Jay Allen Westover Jan 2001

Integrating Environmental Education Into The Curriculum Through Environmental Community Service Learning, Jay Allen Westover

Theses Digitization Project

The goal of environmental education is to increase individuals' ecological knowledge, awareness of associated environmental problems, and motivation to evaluate and implement solutions. This project combined the concepts of environmental education with community service learning to create a new method of curriculum integration: environmental community service learning. The California state standards for environmental education, service learning, language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies were integrated into four thematic units using the teaching methodologies of cooperative learning, authentic assessment, and reflection. The integrated, thematic units of this project could be used by educators in a multi-disciplinary, team teaching scenario on in …

Creating A Student Accessible Online Syllabus, Kenneth Louis Decroo

Theses Digitization Project

This project addresses how to create an online syllabus that is accessible to students and parents, that empowers students to take responsibility for their own learning while enhancing school/home communication, and serves as a graphic representation of what students have accomplished. Web quests are used as the principle means of instructional delivery to engage middle school students in problem-based projects that address real life situations using rigorous and relevant curricula. Elements of an online syllabus and the content of the course it supports are examined. The role, an online syllabus plays in fulfilling the goals of techno-constructivism, the move from …

Total Quality Management In The Auto Industry: Feminine Values In A Man's World?, Chloé Marie Jung

Theses Digitization Project

The objective of this paper was to determine how much of the Total Quality Management (TQM) principles have been adopted by the U.S. carmakers up to now which is about fifteen to twenty years after the "race to quality" started, how the position of women in that industry has evolved over the same period of time, and if more female presence at top executive positions would better promote TQM principles.

"So Extraordinary, So Unprecedented An Authority": A Conceptual Reconsideration Of The Singular Doctrine Of Judicial Review, Anthony V. Baker Jan 2001

"So Extraordinary, So Unprecedented An Authority": A Conceptual Reconsideration Of The Singular Doctrine Of Judicial Review, Anthony V. Baker

Duquesne Law Review

Because the Constitution is the foundation of American government, the political body that interprets and applies that venerable document possesses an extremely potent tool for shaping the American landscape. This tool, known as "judicial review," allows the United States Supreme Court to pass judgment not only upon the actions of individual citizens but also upon the actions of the other branches of federal and state government. This authority inevitably leads to criticism of the way the Court implements this power. The author, after delivering a trenchant analysis of the way in which a judicial reviewing power was viewed in America …

Legal Fiction And Forfeiture: An Historical Analysis Of The Civil Asset Forfeiture Reform Act, Todd Barnet Jan 2001

Legal Fiction And Forfeiture: An Historical Analysis Of The Civil Asset Forfeiture Reform Act, Todd Barnet

Duquesne Law Review

The United States Supreme Court first adopted the legal fiction of the personification of an object for an in rem proceeding in the early 19th century. After summarizing the different definitions of a legal fiction, the author concludes that the civilian definition is the most appropriate, yet should only be applied in narrow circumstances to prevent encroaching upon constitutional freedoms through civil asset forfeiture devices. The author discusses the advantages of legal fictions in the law, but then recounts how excessive use can yield unjust results and possibly incorrect conclusions. Perusing the current usage of legislative, judicial, and historical legal …

Prevention Of Viral Drug Resistance By Novel Combination Therapy, W. F. Mangel, M. T. Brown, M. L. Baniecki, Dale L. Barnard, W. J. Mcgrath Jan 2001

Prevention Of Viral Drug Resistance By Novel Combination Therapy, W. F. Mangel, M. T. Brown, M. L. Baniecki, Dale L. Barnard, W. J. Mcgrath

Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

A new form of antiviral clinical therapy is proposed in which three different drugs are administered against three different targets on the same virus-coded protein. If the physiological functions of the three different target sites are not independent of each other, then a mutation conferring drug resistance at one site may alter the physiological functions at the other sites and further drug resistance may not arise. The adenovirus proteinase, with its two cofactors that act synergistically on enzyme activity, may be a good model system within which to test the efficacy of this form of combination therapy.

Madonna De La Mer: Reflections Of Light And Memory, Amjad S. Faur Jan 2001

Madonna De La Mer: Reflections Of Light And Memory, Amjad S. Faur

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

The Pioneers of photography sought to document their lives with a new sense of reality and permanence. The results have persevered throughout photography's brief history as sparse, elegant, honest and strikingly beautiful images. My research uses late nineteenth century and early twentieth century equipment and techniques to document the timeless beauty, which connects us to those old photographs by creating portraits of people, which will deceive and nurture memory. Without our memories, we respond to the present with only survival instincts. Memory is our pool of reference for all experience. Only two basic elements, light and memory, are used as …

Particle Trapping In A Stratified Flood-Dominated Estuary, Robert J. Chant, Allan W. Stoner Jan 2001

Particle Trapping In A Stratified Flood-Dominated Estuary, Robert J. Chant, Allan W. Stoner

Journal of Marine Research

Observations in the Navesink River estuary in northern New Jersey demonstrate that buoyancy augments the particle trapping tendencies of flood-dominated systems because these estuaries heighten tidal period asymmetries in stratification. During the long and slow ebb which typifies flood-dominated systems, a positive feedback between tidal straining and weak vertical mixing stratifies the estuary. In contrast, during flood, turbulence generated by the stronger tidal currents augments overstraining of the density field and the water column becomes well mixed. The tidal period asymmetries in stratification have profound effects on the vertical structure and transport of suspended matter. During ebb, weak vertical mixing …

Performance Of Cages As Large Animal-Exclusion Devices In The Deep Sea, James E. Eckman, David Thistle, William C. Burnett, Gordon L. J. Paterson, Charles Y. Robertson, P. John D. Lambshead Jan 2001

Performance Of Cages As Large Animal-Exclusion Devices In The Deep Sea, James E. Eckman, David Thistle, William C. Burnett, Gordon L. J. Paterson, Charles Y. Robertson, P. John D. Lambshead

Journal of Marine Research

Sedimentary, deep-sea communities include megafaunal animals (e.g., sea cucumbers, brittle stars, crabs) and demersal fishes, collectively termed the large, motile epifauna (LME). Individuals of the LME are common, and their biomass approximates that of the macrofauna. Based on analogies with shallow-water animals, they are likely to be sources of mortality for the infauna and to create spatial and temporal heterogeneity in the community. Given present theories of deep-sea community organization, such effects could be important. Unfortunately, this hypothesis has not been tested because of the difficulty of conducting experiments in the deep sea and because tools for manipulating the LME …

A Particle Introduction Experiment In Santa Catalina Basin Sediments: Testing The Age-Dependent Mixing Hypothesis, William L. Fornes, David J. Demaster, Craig R. Smith Jan 2001

A Particle Introduction Experiment In Santa Catalina Basin Sediments: Testing The Age-Dependent Mixing Hypothesis, William L. Fornes, David J. Demaster, Craig R. Smith

Journal of Marine Research

The occurrence of "age-dependent mixing," a process by which recently deposited, food-rich particles undergo more intense bioturbation than older, food-poor particles, could dramatically alter patterns of organic-matter diagenesis in deep-sea sediments. To explicitly test for age-dependent mixing, an in-situ particle introduction experiment was conducted on the bathyal Santa Catalina Basin floor. Mixtures of radioisotope-tagged particles representing a food quality gradient were dispersed in small amounts on the seafloor and sampled over periods of 0 to 594 days. Introduced particle types were all similar in size and included fresh diatoms ("young" particles), surface sediments ("intermediate-age" particles), and particles from 30-cm deep …

Effects Of Macrofauna On Acoustic Backscatter From The Seabed: Field Manipulations In West Sound, Orcas Island, Washington, U.S.A., Robert F. L. Self, Patrick A'Hearn, Peter A. Jumars, Darrell R. Jackson, Michael D. Richardson, Kevin B. Briggs Jan 2001

Effects Of Macrofauna On Acoustic Backscatter From The Seabed: Field Manipulations In West Sound, Orcas Island, Washington, U.S.A., Robert F. L. Self, Patrick A'Hearn, Peter A. Jumars, Darrell R. Jackson, Michael D. Richardson, Kevin B. Briggs

Journal of Marine Research

Previous observations with a bottom-mounted, radially scanning sonar (BAMS) at 40 kHz suggested that macrofaunal activities influence low-angle, acoustic backscatter from seafloor sediments. In order to test that possibility experimentally, we measured and modeled time series of backscatter strength at both 40 and 300 kHz prior to manipulation and then introduced several macrofaunal species at known abundances to randomly selected locations within the ensonified area. We worked in West Sound, Orcas Island, Washington, at a water depth of 20.4 m and for the more frequently recorded 40-kHz series extracted effects by the time-series method known as "intervention analysis," wherein the …

Veneration Of The Virgin Of Crystal In Ritual And Narrative, Kristin B. Valentine, Eugene Valentine Jan 2001

Veneration Of The Virgin Of Crystal In Ritual And Narrative, Kristin B. Valentine, Eugene Valentine

Iowa Journal of Communication

This essay describes and analyzes a ritual and a number of narratives associated with a cultural event in Galicia-a region of Spain that remains largely neglected in ethnographic studies. In the village of Vilanova dos Infantes, there is a religious artifact of considerable interest: a small column of clear glass that contains-suspended vertically in its center-a flat, two-sided image of a woman venerated as the Virgin Mary. Called the "Virgin of Crystal," this object is revered as being of divine origin and possessing the power to work miracles; it plays, therefore, a significant role in the performative lives of the …

Whose Genetic Information Is It Anyway? A Legal Analysis Of The Effects That Mapping The Human Genome Will Have On Privacy Rights And Genetic Discrimination, 19 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 609 (2001), Deborah L. Mclochlin Jan 2001

Whose Genetic Information Is It Anyway? A Legal Analysis Of The Effects That Mapping The Human Genome Will Have On Privacy Rights And Genetic Discrimination, 19 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 609 (2001), Deborah L. Mclochlin

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

"There is no information more personal and private than one's genetic information" – one's DNA. Under the Human Genome Project, mapping of the human genetic code is under way. From this mapping of genetic code, information such as the likelihood of developing cancer, diabetes, etc. would certainly become available. Although this information may be helpful to one's health providers, companies and governments may begin to use this information to discriminate individuals based on their genetic predispositions. This article focuses on the current federal legislation while proposing a new federal legislation in light of this great genetic endeavor. Legislation "has always …

Effects Of Collection, Transport, And Redeployment Methods On Natural Mortality Of Rangia Cuneata (Mactridae) Used In Biomonitoring Studies, Eugene G. Maurakis, David V. Grimes, William C. Gretes Jan 2001

Effects Of Collection, Transport, And Redeployment Methods On Natural Mortality Of Rangia Cuneata (Mactridae) Used In Biomonitoring Studies, Eugene G. Maurakis, David V. Grimes, William C. Gretes

Virginia Journal of Science

Sporadic, high mortality in test populations of wedge clams (Rangia cuneata) has limited the potential for using this otherwise desirable test organism in biomonitoring studies. To determine whether high mortality was due to ontogenic or experimental variables, a two-phased study was conducted. In phase I, mortality of collected and re-deployed wedge clams, subjected to varying transport conditions, was determined at 7, 14, 21 and 60 days re-deployment. The use of three transport times (1, 2, 3 hr.), two vehicle conditions (open, closed) and three transport treatments (open, closed, iced containers) yielded 18 test groups. Individual test group mortalities …

Gross Brain Morphology In The Yellow Stingray, Urobatis Jamaicensis, Brian K. Walker, Robin L. Sherman Jan 2001

Gross Brain Morphology In The Yellow Stingray, Urobatis Jamaicensis, Brian K. Walker, Robin L. Sherman

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

The yellow stingray, Urobatis jamaicensis (family Urolophidae), a short-lived, relatively small elasmobranch species (35--40 cm total length), is a common inhabitant of hard bottom and coral reef communities in southeastern Florida and many parts of the Caribbean. A paucity of published studies deal with the yellow stingray, none however on the gross morphology of its nervous system. The gross brain structure of the yellow stingray is compared with previously published studies on other batoid elasmobranchs. The external brain structure of Urobatis jamaicensis was similar to that reported for other Dasyatids, including presence of an asymmetric cerebellum. The bilaterally symmetric brain …
