No. 21: Cross-Border Raiding And Community Conflict In The Lesotho-South African Border Zone, Gary Kynoch, Theresa Ulicki, Tsepang Cekwane, Booi Mohapi, Mampolokeng Mohapi, Ntsoaki Phakisi, Palesa Seithleko

Southern African Migration Programme

Movement backwards and forwards across borders for work is often considered to be the primary form of unauthorized movement in Southern Africa. In southern Lesotho, a new and particularly dangerous form of two-way cross-border movement has become entrenched. This situation warrants the label “crisis”; a crisis which is devastating parts of the countryside in both Lesotho and the northern Eastern Cape Province of South Africa.

Media and official attention has focused on the extreme violence which accompanies cross-border stock raiding. This paper seeks to understand the social and economic roots and impacts of cross-border stock theft. Such an analysis is …

Effect Of Forskolin On Actin Polymerization In Cultured Vascular Smooth Muscle, Mary Janay Bailey Jan 2001

Effect Of Forskolin On Actin Polymerization In Cultured Vascular Smooth Muscle, Mary Janay Bailey

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Increases in intracellular cyclic AMP levels have been shown to affect vascular smooth muscle morphology. In the present study, effects of elevated cyclic AMP levels on actin polymerization were assessed to determine whether cyclic AMP induces specific changes in cytoskeletal proteins of vascular smooth muscle cells. Forskolin was used to increase intracellular cyclic AMP levels through direct activation of adenylate cyclase. Light and Electron microscopy was employed to appraise changes in the shape of vascular smooth muscle cells. Confocal microscopy was used to reveal cytoskeletal changes after exposure to M forskolin for increasing intervals of time. Differences in the expression …

Potential Dysfunctions Occurring In The Postpartum Years, Rebecca Olson

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

There are several dysfunctions that may affect a woman after childbirth. Women · often accept the physical changes that occur after delivering a baby and are unaware that treatment is available. The purpose of this literature review is to educate women in the postpartum period on the dysfunctions that may occur, and possible treatment options. An educational pamphlet describing these dysfunctions and treatments was designed to be given to these women before they leave the hospital.

First, the anatomy and physiology of the female pelvic floor is reviewed. This is followed by a description of several physical dysfunctions occurring in …

Trace Element Concentrations In Plants And Sediments At Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Karen J. Nelson, Brent J. Esmoil

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is located in the Sandhills of western Nebraska, an area which contains the largest remaining tract of mid-grass and tall-grass prairie in North America. Land use surrounding the refuge is dominated by rangeland and land use practices likely result in minimal inputs of point or non-point source pollution. Industrial development in the area is minimal and the refuge complex is believed to be in fairly pristine condition. The use of persistent organochlorine pesticides on the refuge has been limited. The objectives of this study were to determine background concentrations of metals in biotic and …

Analysis Of Risk Factors For Fatal Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever: Evidence For Superiority Of Tetracyclines For Therapy, Robert C. Holman, Christopher D. Paddock, Aaron T. Curns, John W. Krebs, Jennifer H. Mcquiston, James E. Childs Jan 2001

Analysis Of Risk Factors For Fatal Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever: Evidence For Superiority Of Tetracyclines For Therapy, Robert C. Holman, Christopher D. Paddock, Aaron T. Curns, John W. Krebs, Jennifer H. Mcquiston, James E. Childs

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Epidemiologic and clinical characteristics of fatal and nonfatal cases of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) were compared to identify risk factors for death caused by this disease. Confirmed and probable RMSF cases reported through US national surveillance for 1981- 1998 were analyzed. Among 6388 RMSF patients, 213 died (annual case-fatality rate, 3M; range, 4.9 % in 1982 to 1.1 % in 1996). Use of tetracycline-class antibiotics for treatment of RMSF increased significantly in the 1990s, compared with use in the 1980s. Older patients, patients treated with chloramphenicol only, patients for whom tetracycline antibiotics were not the primary therapy, and patients …

Prp-C And Prp-Sc At The Fetal-Maternal Interface, Wenbin Tuo, Dongyue Zhuang, Donald P. Knowles, William P. Cheevers, Man-Sun Sy, Katherine I. O'Rourke

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Scrapie is a naturally occurring prion (PrP) disease causing a fatal neurodegenerative disorder in sheep and goats. Previous studies suggest that scrapie is transmitted naturally through exposure to the scrapie agent in wasted placentas of infected ewes. This study determined the distribution and biochemical properties of PrP cellular (PrP-C) and the distribution of PrP scrapie (PrP-Sc) in reproductive, placental, and selected fetal tissues and fetal fluids in sheep. Glycosylated, N-terminally truncated, proteinase K-sensitive PrP-C with apparent molecular masses of 23–37 kDa was present in reproductive, placental, and fetal tissues and fetal fluids. PrP-C was low or undetectable in intercotyledonary chorioallantois, …

Immunohistochemical Detection Of Scrapie Prion Proteins In Clinically Normal Sheep In Pennsylvania, Hyun Kim, Katherine I. O'Rourke, Mark Walter, H. Graham Purchase, John Enck, Tae Kyun Shin

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Following diagnosis of scrapie in a clinically suspect Suffolk sheep, 7 clinically normal flockmates were purchased by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture to determine their scrapie status using an immunohistochemical procedure. Two of the 7 euthanized healthy sheep had positive immunohistochemical staining of the prion protein of scrapie (PrP-Sc) in their brains, nictitating membranes, and tonsils. The PrP-Sc was localized in the areas of the brain where, histopathologically, there was neurodegeneration and astrocytosis. The PrP-Sc occurred within germinal centers of the affected nictitating membranes and tonsils and was located in the cytoplasm of the dendrite-like cells, lymphoid cells, and macrophages. …

Preliminary Findings On The Experimental Transmission Of Chronic Wasting Disease Agent Of Mule Deer To Cattle, Amir N. Hamir, Randall C. Cutlip, Janice M. Miller, Elizabeth S. Williams, Mick J. Stack, Michael W. Miller, Katherine I. O'Rourke, Melanie J. Chaplin Jan 2001

Preliminary Findings On The Experimental Transmission Of Chronic Wasting Disease Agent Of Mule Deer To Cattle, Amir N. Hamir, Randall C. Cutlip, Janice M. Miller, Elizabeth S. Williams, Mick J. Stack, Michael W. Miller, Katherine I. O'Rourke, Melanie J. Chaplin

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

To determine the transmissibility of chronic wasting disease (CWD) to cattle and to provide information about clinical course, lesions, and suitability of currently used diagnostic procedures for detection of CWD in cattle, 13 calves were inoculated intracerebrally with brain suspension from mule deer naturally affected with CWD. Between 24 and 27 months postinoculation, 3 animals became recumbent and were euthanized. Gross necropsies revealed emaciation in 2 animals and a large pulmonary abscess in the third. Brains were examined for protease-resistant prion protein (PrPres) by immunohistochemistry and Western blotting and for scrapie-associated fibrils (SAFs) by negative-stain electron microscopy. Microscopic …

The Frontier To Innerspace: Arguments Against A Mass-Mediated Culture In The Truman Show, Kimberly A. Powell Jan 2001

The Frontier To Innerspace: Arguments Against A Mass-Mediated Culture In The Truman Show, Kimberly A. Powell

Iowa Journal of Communication

The 1998 film, The Truman Show, is a carefully executed lie that plays on our sense of media manipulation. The central argument within The Truman Show is that of the phoniness of our culture, thus questioning what is right, wrong, truth and lie. This essay examines the development of an anti-media saturation argument through Birth, Family and Resurrection metaphors by following the lead character, Truman Burbank, as he discovers a new frontier of innerspace. Because values are central to analyzing the frontier myth in film, this essay employs Frentz and Rushing's (1978) Social Value Model to discover how lead …

Ant–Seed Mutualisms: Can Red Imported Fire Ants Sour The Relationship?, Jennifer A. Zettler, Timothy P. Spira, Craig R. Allen Jan 2001

Ant–Seed Mutualisms: Can Red Imported Fire Ants Sour The Relationship?, Jennifer A. Zettler, Timothy P. Spira, Craig R. Allen

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Invasion by the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, has had negative impacts on individual animal and plant species, but little is known about how S. invicta affects complex mutualistic relationships. In some eastern forests of North America, 30% of herbaceous species have ant-dispersed seeds. We conducted experiments to determine if fire ants are attracted to seeds of these plant species and assessed the amount of scarification or damage that results from handling by fire ants. Fire ants removed nearly 100% of seeds of the ant-dispersed plants Trillium undulatum, T. discolor, T. catesbaei, Viola rotundifolia, and Sanguinaria canadensis. …

Effects Of Fire Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) On Hatching Turtles And Prevalence Of Fire Ants On Sea Turtle Nesting Beaches In Florida, Craig R. Allen, Elizabeth A. Forys, Kenneth G. Rice, Daniel P. Wojcik Jan 2001

Effects Of Fire Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) On Hatching Turtles And Prevalence Of Fire Ants On Sea Turtle Nesting Beaches In Florida, Craig R. Allen, Elizabeth A. Forys, Kenneth G. Rice, Daniel P. Wojcik

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta Buren) have increasingly been observed in loggerhead (Caretta caretta L.) and green (Chelonia mydas L.) sea turtle nests in Florida, and in the nests of freshwater turtles. They may be attracted to the disturbance, mucous and moisture associated with turtle nesting and establish foraging tunnels into turtle nests shortly after egg-laying, thus increasing the vulnerability of hatchlings to fire ant predation. We conducted experiments on a freshwater turtle (Pseudemys nelsoni Carr) to determine the potential impacts of S. invicta on turtle hatchlings. Over 70% of hatchlings were killed by …

Linking The Conservation Of Culture And Nature: A Case Study Of Sacred Forests In Zimbabwe, Bruce A. Byers, Robert N. Cunliffe, Andrew T. Hudak Jan 2001

Linking The Conservation Of Culture And Nature: A Case Study Of Sacred Forests In Zimbabwe, Bruce A. Byers, Robert N. Cunliffe, Andrew T. Hudak

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

This paper examines the role of traditional religious beliefs and traditional leaders in conserving remnant patches of a unique type of dry forest in the Zambezi Valley of northern Zimbabwe. We examined aerial photographs spanning more than three decades, interviewed and surveyed local residents, and met with communities to learn about the environmental history of the forests and the factors that have affected land use in the area. Our results show that forest loss is dramatically less in forests that are now considered sacred, or were in the past connected to sacred forests. This supports our hypothesis that traditional spiritual …
