Play Therapy, Melissa M. Sitzmann Jan 2001

Play Therapy, Melissa M. Sitzmann

Graduate Research Papers

Play therapy is a current trend in school and mental health counseling that takes into account the importance of play for a child's self -expression. It is primarily used with children ranging from three to ten years in age (Knell, 1995). Play therapy is not a theory that stands alone; counselors utilizing play therapy draw from their personal theoretical orientation and blend it with play as the primary means of communication (Cochran, 1996).

The purpose of this paper is to describe play therapy skills. In addition, two theories of play therapy that could be implemented in a school setting will …

Enhancing Rural Sustainability Project Status Report

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

For the past year, the PPC has been working to identify a small list of key issues related to enhancing rural sustainability that would benefit from University research, with special attention paid to research activities already underway or in the planning process at the University. We also have been considering procedural options to determine the best way to facilitate the research to be conducted.

Nerve Injury Induces A Rapid Efflux Of Nitric Oxide (No) Detected With A Novel No Microsensor, Shanta M. Kumar, D. M. Porterfield, Kenneth J. Muller, Peter J.S. Smith, Christie L. Sahley Jan 2001

Nerve Injury Induces A Rapid Efflux Of Nitric Oxide (No) Detected With A Novel No Microsensor, Shanta M. Kumar, D. M. Porterfield, Kenneth J. Muller, Peter J.S. Smith, Christie L. Sahley

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

An early step in repair of the leech CNS is the appearance of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) immunoreactivity and NOS activity, but coincident generation of NO at the lesion after injury has not been shown. This is important because NO can regulate microglial cell motility and axon growth. Indirect measurement of NO with the standard citrulline assay demonstrated that NO was generated within 30 min after nerve cord injury. A polarographic NO-selective self-referencing microelectrode that measures NO flux noninvasively was developed to obtain higher spatial and temporal resolution. With this probe, it was possible to demonstrate that immediately after …

A Synopsis Of Bora Tone, David J. Weber, Wesley Thiesen Jan 2001

A Synopsis Of Bora Tone, David J. Weber, Wesley Thiesen

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

The tonal system of Bora, a Witotoan language of Colombia and Peru, has high and low tones. Most tonal phenomena refer to low—not high—tone. For example, virtually all lexically marked tones are low. Further, many suffixes assign low tones to preceding syllables, but never creating a sequence of adjacent low tones. This is modeled with the cyclical addition of suffixes where adjacent low tones are avoided by either blocking the placement of the suffix's low tone or by delinking a previously assigned low tone. Finally, low tone plays a role in various syntactic constructions.

Chapter 02: National, Regional And Local Context, Christian Jetté, Humberto Alzérreca Angelo, D. Layne Coppock

Sustaining Agropastoralism on the Bolivian Altiplano: The Case of San José Llanga

To better understand today’s constraints and opportunities for improving small ruminant production systems on the Bolivian Altiplano, it is important to first consider the broader contexts of environment and social history. This chapter provides an introductory overview of secondary information concerning major ecological regions of Bolivia, constituent agroecosystems and how ecological regions are interrelated in terms of climate, geography, macro-economics and agricultural policy. Key aspects of cultural change and political history are also reviewed. These are important because present-day values and behaviours of Andean campesinos, as well as their use of agricultural technologies, have been profoundly shaped by forces including …

Meat Traceability: Are U.S. Consumers Willing To Pay For It?, David L. Dickenson, Deevon Bailey Jan 2001

Meat Traceability: Are U.S. Consumers Willing To Pay For It?, David L. Dickenson, Deevon Bailey

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This article reports the results from a series of laboratory auction markets in which consumers bid on meat characteristics. The characteristics examined include meat traceability (i.e., the ability to trace the retail meat back to the farm or animal or origin), transparency (e.g., knowing that the meat was produced without growth hormones, or knowing the animal was humanely treated), and extra assurances (e.g., extra meat safety assurances). This laboratory study provides non-hypothetical bid data on U.S. consumer preferences for traceability, transparency, and assurances (TTA) in red meat at a time when the U.S. currently lags other 111 countries in development …

Environmental Determinants Of Cost Sharing--An Application To Irrigation, David Aadland, Van Kolpin Jan 2001

Environmental Determinants Of Cost Sharing--An Application To Irrigation, David Aadland, Van Kolpin

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Multiple-cost sharing rules often coexist in seemingly identical environments. We use shared irrigation costs as a context for examining the extent to which the structural environment explains the selection of a cost sharing rule. We find that environmental factors that-induce greater dependence on the cooperation of others, influence majority interests, create difficulties for interpersonal utility comparisons, or impact notions of "faimess"-all have impressive explanatory power. These results present the first formal empirical analysis of the manner in which structural features influence the actual cost-sharing choices of economic agents.

Market Opportunities And Threats To The U.S. Pork Industry Posed By Traceability Systems, Sterling Liddell, Deevon Bailey Jan 2001

Market Opportunities And Threats To The U.S. Pork Industry Posed By Traceability Systems, Sterling Liddell, Deevon Bailey

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper demonstrates that the U.S. pork industry is lagging its principal international competitors and major international customers in terms of developing programs for traceability, transparency, and assurance (TTA). The primary areas of weakness in U.S. TTA programs are at the producer level and in the area of providing consumers quality assurance regarding inputs used in producing pork products. We conclude that the U.S. pork industry may diminish its competitive advantage in world pork markets if it fails to enhance its TT A programs.
