Jkarelrobot: A Case Study In Supporting Levels Of Cognitive Development In The Computer Science Curriculum, Duane Buck, David J. Stucki

Mathematics Faculty Scholarship

We introduce a new software tool, JKarelRobot, for supporting an Inside/Out pedagogy in introductory programming courses. Extending the original conception of "Karel the Robot", with Bloom's Taxonomy of Educational Objectives as a guiding principle, we have provided a mechanism for designing exercises that are cognitively appropriate to the developmental levels of our students. JKarelRobot is platform independent (written in Java) and language/paradigm independent, supporting Pascal, Java, and Lisp style environments.

Site Fidelity, Philopatry, And Survival Of Promiscuous Saltmarsh Sharp-Tailed Sparrows In Rhode Island, Deborah A. Diquinzio, Peter W. C. Paton, William R. Eddleman

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

We investigated site fidelity and apparent survival in a promiscuous population of Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed Sparrows (Ammodramus caudacutus) in southern Rhode Island. Based on capture–recapture histories of 446 color-banded sparrows studied from 1993 to 1998 at our primary study site, Galilee, we observed significant variation in apparent survival rates among years, but not between sexes. Return rates of adult males (37.6%) and females (35.6%) were not significantly different during any year. Juveniles exhibited high return rates, ranging from 0 to 44%, with males (61% of returns) more likely to return than females (35%). In addition, we monitored movements of …

Nf584 Strategies For Range Beef Cattle Producers In Arid Environments Following Drought, Tom Holman, Patrick E. Reece, Ivan G. Rush, David D. Baltensperger Jan 2001

Nf584 Strategies For Range Beef Cattle Producers In Arid Environments Following Drought, Tom Holman, Patrick E. Reece, Ivan G. Rush, David D. Baltensperger

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebFact addresses how to deal with an inadequate supply of forage for range beef cattle because of drought. Precipitation can be below average for much of the Nebraska Panhandle and adjoining areas for prolonged periods. Prolonged drought results in an inadequate supply of forage for hundreds of thousands of beef cattle on millions of acres of rangeland. While some variation occurs among ranches and among pastures within a given ranch, all rangeland vegetation in arid environments like western Nebraska can be moderately to severely damaged by drought stress and/or excessive grazing. Consequently, even if soil moisture is not limited …

Ethnic Differences In Risk From Mercury Among Savannah River Fishermen, Joanna Burger, Karen F. Gaines, Michael Gochfeld Jan 2001

Ethnic Differences In Risk From Mercury Among Savannah River Fishermen, Joanna Burger, Karen F. Gaines, Michael Gochfeld

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Fishing plays an important role in people's lives and contaminant levels in fish are a public health concern. Many states have issued consumption advisories; South Carolina and Georgia have issued them for the Savannah River based on mercury and radionuclide levels. This study examined ethnic differences in risk from mercury exposure among people consuming fish from the Savannah River, based on site-specific consumption patterns and analysis of mercury in fish. Among fish, there were significant interspecies differences in mercury levels, and there were ethnic differences in consumption patterns. Two methods of examining risk are presented: (1) Hazard Index (HI), and …

A Flexible Corporation: Classic Period House Societies In Eastern Mesoamerica, Julia A. Hendon, Rosemary A. Joyce Jan 2001

A Flexible Corporation: Classic Period House Societies In Eastern Mesoamerica, Julia A. Hendon, Rosemary A. Joyce

Anthropology Faculty Publications

House society models, based on the work of Levi-Strauss but since refined by cultural anthropologists and archaeologists, provide a good model for understanding social organization among the ancient Maya and their neighbors in Mesoamerica based on a comparative study of societies in the Copan Valley, the lower Ulua Valley (Sula Valley), and the Cuyumapa Valley, all in Honduras. Social Houses are flexible, enduring social groupings that define kinship flexibly, recognizing adoption, marriage, shared residency, and other factors as ways to create ties that endure over generations.

Ec01-809 Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 2000-01, Bruce B. Johnson, Peter Brummels, Lance Kuenning

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Nebraska's agricultural land base is considerable, being comprised of more than 45 million acres of land in farms and ranches according to the most recent 1997 Census of Agriculture. Currently, it's total estimated market value is more than $32 billion. There is much diversity to this base as one moves across the state, reflecting major differences in soils and climatic features which, in turn, affect agricultural productivity and the various non-agricultural uses. The result is a virtual collage of hundreds of local agricultural land markets, each having unique land value levels and market characteristics.

This extension circular gives a realistic …

Nf01-484 Biosecurity: Protecting Your Health And The Health Of Your Animals, Rosie Nold, David R. Smith

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The recent media attention on outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in the United Kingdom, pseudorabies in Nebraska and other livestock-related diseases reminds us of the costly consequences of livestock diseases. Most diseases, including foot-and-mouth disease and pseudorabies, cannot be transmitted from animals to humans. Even though these diseases do not present any direct risks to humans, human contact and attendance at fairs can help spread these diseases to other livestock herds. Livestock disease outbreaks can be economically devastating to your family, your community and the state, which derives a large portion of its income from the livestock industry. Some diseases, such …

Spatial And Temporal Trends In Nitrate Contamination Of Groundwater In The Salinas Valley, Angela Dickeson Jan 2001

Spatial And Temporal Trends In Nitrate Contamination Of Groundwater In The Salinas Valley, Angela Dickeson

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

s the Earth's population grows, we must work harder to find new fresh water sources and to protect existing ones. This Capstone focuses on the contributions of nitrate contamination to groundwater in the Salinas Valley. How is the spatial distribution of nitrate contamination changing over time, and should we be more concerned about some areas than others? I sampled wells throughout the Salinas Valley in Summer 2000 and combined that data with historical data provided by the Monterey County Water Resources Agency. Agricultural and domestic wells from Castroville to San Ardo were included in the survey. The Monterey County Consolidated …

An Assessment Of Coral Reef Conservation Programs : Towards A Community-Based Approach, Adam Howard Feldman Jan 2001

An Assessment Of Coral Reef Conservation Programs : Towards A Community-Based Approach, Adam Howard Feldman

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

he multiple-use benefits of coral reefs include tourism, food resources, medicinal uses, and building materials. However, many studies suggest that these important ecosystems are slowly declining and disappearing, which has lead to the creation of many coral reef monitoring and management programs. Approaches to monitoring and managing coral reefs can be divided into two broad categories: top-down and bottom up. Top-down approaches to monitoring and managing coral reefs don't involve the community, and tend not be as effective as bottom-up approaches that involve all community stakeholders. However, these bottom-up approaches vary in their degree of effectiveness. I reviewed 5 coral …

An Assessment And Management Protocol For Arundo Donax In The Salinas Valley Watershed, Alana J. Oakins Jan 2001

An Assessment And Management Protocol For Arundo Donax In The Salinas Valley Watershed, Alana J. Oakins

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

rundo donax is an invasive non-native perennial grass indigenous to the Mediterranean region. Arundo was introduced to California by Spanish settlers in the 1800's and today is invading riparian habitats of North America, specifically in California. In fact, the California Exotic Plant Pest Council (CalEPPC) has included Arundo donax as one of the top five species of concern because of the associated environmental problems such as flood-control, fire-hazard, critical habitat loss, water quality, and water conservation. This study aimed: 1) to discuss the most effective management methods of Arundo donax infestations and the appropriate methods for restoring native vegetation in …
