Evolution Of Upper Jaw Protrusion Mechanisms In Elasmobranchs, Cheryl Wilga, Robert E. Hueter, Peter C. Wainwright, Philip J. Motta

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Upper jaw protrusion is a prominent component of the feeding mechanism in most elasmobranchs and has received considerable attention over the years. In this paper, we review what is known of muscle activity during prey capture in elasmobranchs, particularly that of upper jaw protrusion, and evaluate the extent to which functional modifications have evolved through changes in anatomy or patterns of muscle activity. To date, motor activity during feeding has been documented in only four species of elasmobranchs, although they represent the three major elasmobranch groups: Galea (typical sharks); Squalea (dogfish sharks); and Batoidea (skates and rays). Our efforts show …

Medical Relief After An Unnatural Disaster: How International Health Care Providers May Prove Counter-Productive To Recovery, Maureen Mccue

International Journal of Global Health

Equally severe natural disasters that hit equally populous areas produce vastly different impacts and outcomes depending on preexisting political and economic conditions. International relief organizations and civil defense disaster response teams employ effective life saving protocols in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. However, there is little information that addresses the ongoing needs or assesses appropriate responses to the persistent hardships and ill health remaining months after a disastrous event hits an impoverished nation. This article relates the experience of27 volunteer health care workers who provided relief care to Nicaraguan victims of Hurricane Mitch three months after the event. Issues …

Apoptosis Of Rat Myoblasts Is Induced In Vitro By Late, But Not Early, Wound Fluids, Raymond E. Sicard, Linh Nguyen, John Menezes

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Interstitial fluids from late wound repair environments are not "regeneration permissive" as judged by their inability to promote either proliferation or differentiation of myoblasts in vitro. This irwestigation considered whether apoptosis (induced death) was an alternative fate for myoblasts exposed to these interstitial fluids. Myoblast fate was assessed by cell counts, tritiated thymidine release, and propidium iodide staining. Fluids from early wounds increased mean cell counts and induced little thymidine release or propidium iodide labeling. In contrast, fluids from late wounds reduced cell counts and induced both thymidine release and propidium iodide labeling. These data suggest that interstitial fluids from …

The Potential For Spread Of Codling Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Via Commercial Sweet Cherry Fruit: A Critical Review And Risk Assessment, C. H. Wearing, J. D. Hansen, C. Whyte, C. E. Miller, J. Brown Jan 2001

The Potential For Spread Of Codling Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Via Commercial Sweet Cherry Fruit: A Critical Review And Risk Assessment, C. H. Wearing, J. D. Hansen, C. Whyte, C. E. Miller, J. Brown

USDA Systematic Entomology Laboratory

The identity, geographical distribution, and host range of codling moth is reviewed, and the evidence for sweet cherry being a host is critically analyzed. A model is described which assesses the risk of codling moth being spread through international trade in sweet cherries, as exemplified by exports from, respectively, New Zealand and USA to Japan in winter and summer. The model is based on the recorded incidence of codling moth in cherries and its estimated probability of survival during storage, transport to, and arrival in Japan, using data from specific studies and from wider knowledge of the phenology, life history, …

Biology Of A Michigan Endangered Specie: Distribution And Host Plant Use Of The Great Plains Spittlebug, Lepyronia Gibbosa (Homoptera: Cercopidae), Casie Summerfield

McNair Scholars Journal

The Great Plains Spittlebug, Lepyronia gibbosa (Homoptera: Cercopidae) is a state threatened specie in Michigan. The distribution, population size, host plant use, and basic biology details of this insect were determined in southwestern Michigan during the summer of2001. Juvenile populations and host-plant use data were obtained using standard transects. Adult populations were obtained by sweeping a 25-meter transect with a standard sweep net. Adult host plant use was determined by using a gas-powered vacuum to sample insects on individual plant species. It was found that the distribution of the Great Plains Spittlebug is much greater than previously reported (Hanna, 1970), …

Goldfish Brain Gap-43: Analysis By One And Two-Dimensional Gel Electrophoresis, Kendra Williams Jan 2001

Goldfish Brain Gap-43: Analysis By One And Two-Dimensional Gel Electrophoresis, Kendra Williams

McNair Scholars Journal

The concept of learning and memory is a neurological process believed to reside in the nervous system of living organisms. In particular; the growth-associated protein, GAP-43, has been shown to alter its state of phosphorylation via a protein kinase C mediated reaction following long-term potentiation, a paradigm of learning and memory. Most recent studies of GAP-43 in goldfish (Carassius auratus L.) hve focused on its presence in regenerating or developing optic nerves. The present study seeks to determine the existence of GAP-43 in the goldfish brain by Western blotting with commercially available antibodies and secondly, quantify phosphorylated isoforms of GAP-43 …

Chapter 04: Household Economy And Community Dynamics At San José Llanga, Corinne Valdivia, Christian Jetté, Lisa Markowitz, Jorge Céspedes, João S. De Queiroz, Carmen Murillo Quiroga, Elizabeth Dunn

Sustaining Agropastoralism on the Bolivian Altiplano: The Case of San José Llanga

This chapter has several main purposes. One is to provide a contemporary image of the peasant production system at San José Llanga (SJL) from 1992 to 1995, the years of our field research. Another purpose is to provide a framework of the historical processes that have influenced local society in this century. We wanted to know about standards of living, diets and food security, income and expenditure patterns, gender roles and aspirations of the people. We wanted to know about population dynamics, community leadership, resource tenure and off-farm activities. We wanted information on the types of crops and livestock produced …

The Forester's Dilemma : Paradoxes In The Criteria And Indicators For Sustainable Forestry, Theodore E. Howard Jan 2001

The Forester's Dilemma : Paradoxes In The Criteria And Indicators For Sustainable Forestry, Theodore E. Howard

New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station Publications

Since sustainable forestry is a complex endeavor, paradoxes naturally exist in the certification criteria and indicators. There are different ways to establish the sustainability horizon and alternative harvest profiles that, although sustainable, may not meet specific criteria. The application of historic range of variation data and criteria must confront issues of time and spatial scales as well as how much human disturbance is natural. Defining “local” in the bioregional context is important for addressing socioeconomic criteria. The forester’s ability to deal with the self-contradictions in the criteria and indicators of sustainable forestry will improve with experience in the certification process.

Analysis Of The Spectra Of Degraded Documents, Ryan Swift Jan 2001

Analysis Of The Spectra Of Degraded Documents, Ryan Swift

Theses

The intent of this research was to examine the spectral reflectance of degraded documents to determine whether information is available in regions visible to the human eye. Ultimately we attempt to determine the practicality of manipulating visible (RGB) images to obtain similar information commonly obtained by using infrafred (IR) imaging methods. Charred newspaper was tested as an example of a degraded document. Spectral reflectance of the degraded documents was measured using a fiber optic grating spectrometer. In addition, images were taken of the documents in both the visible (RGB) and infrared (IR) regions of the spectrum. By examining the spectral …

The Immortalized Urotsa Cell Line As A Potential Cell Culture Model Of Human Urothelium., M R. Rossi, J R. Masters, S Park, J H. Todd, S H. Garrett, M A. Sens, S Somji, J Nath, D A. Sens

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The UROtsa cell line was isolated from a primary culture of normal human urothelium through immortalization with a construct containing the SV40 large T antigen. It proliferates in serum-containing growth medium as a cell monolayer with little evidence of uroepithelial differentiation. The working hypothesis in the present study was that this cell line could be induced to differentiate and express known features of in situ urothelium if the original serum-containing growth medium was changed to a serum-free formulation. We demonstrated that the UROtsa cells could be successfully placed into a serum-free growth medium consisting of a 1:1 mixture of Dulbeco's …

Diesel Exhaust Particles Suppress Macrophage Function And Slow The Pulmonary Clearance Of Listeria Monocytogenes In Rats., H M. Yang, J M. Antonini, M W. Barger, L Butterworth, B R. Roberts, J K. Ma, V Castranova, J Y. Ma

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In this study, we tested the hypothesis that exposure to diesel exhaust particles (DEP) may increase susceptibility of the host to pulmonary infection. Male Sprague-Dawley rats received a single dose of DEP (5 mg/kg), carbon black (CB, 5 mg/kg), or saline intratracheally. Three days later, the rats were inoculated intratracheally with approximately 5,000 Listeria monocytogenes and sacrificed at 3, 5, and 7 days postinfection, and we determined the number of viable Listeria in the left lobe of lungs. The remaining lungs underwent bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and the retrieved BAL cells were identified and counted. Luminol-dependent chemiluminescence, a measure of reactive …
