Influence Of Size Of Sporocyst Inoculum Upon The Size And Number Of Sarcocysts Of Sarcocystis Falcatula Which Develop In The Brown-Headed Cowbird, Melanie P. Hemenway, Michael L. Avery, Pam E. Ginn, Sarah Schaack, John B. Dame, Ellis C. Greiner

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The influence of the number of sporocysts in the inoculum of Sarcocystis falcatula on the morphology of the sarcocysts has not been reported in the literature. To determine if there is a relationship, different number of sporocysts were inoculated orally into wild-caught cowbirds. After 14 weeks, the cowbirds were euthanised and muscle tissue was examined grossly and by histologic sections. Sarcocysts were compared based on the numbers which developed and their sizes. There was a linear increase in the number of sarcocysts as the size of the inoculum increased, however, the size of the sarcocysts became smaller with the increase …

Development Of Sarcocystis Falcatula In Its Intermediate Host, The Brown-Headed Cowbird (Molothrus Ater), Shannon L. Luznar, Michael L. Avery, John B. Dame, Robert J. Mackay, Ellis C. Greiner Mar 2001

Development Of Sarcocystis Falcatula In Its Intermediate Host, The Brown-Headed Cowbird (Molothrus Ater), Shannon L. Luznar, Michael L. Avery, John B. Dame, Robert J. Mackay, Ellis C. Greiner

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Sporocysts of Sarcocystis falcatula obtained from experimentally infected Virginia opossums (Didelphis virginiana) were inoculated orally to 60 wild-caught Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater). Another 30 Brown-headed Cowbirds were not challenged and served as uninfected controls. Two inoculated and one control cowbird were necropsied every 2 weeks and the pectoral and thigh muscles were examined grossly for cyst development. Stained histologic sections of pectoral muscle, thigh muscle, and lung were examined by light microscopy and presence, density, and size of sarcocysts were determined. Sarcocysts were present by 6 weeks post-inoculation (PI) and were still growing at …

Plant-Derived Oils Reduce Pathogens And Gaseous Emissions From Stored Cattle Waste, Vincent H. Varel, Daniel N. Miller Mar 2001

Plant-Derived Oils Reduce Pathogens And Gaseous Emissions From Stored Cattle Waste, Vincent H. Varel, Daniel N. Miller

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Carvacrol and thymol in combination at 6.7 mM each completely inhibited the production of short-chain volatile fatty acids and lactate from cattle waste in anoxic flasks over 23 days. Fecal coliforms were reduced from 4.6 x 106 to 2.0 x 103 cells per ml 2 days after treatment and were nondetectable within 4 days. Total anaerobic bacteria were reduced from 8.4 x 1010 to 1.5 x 107 cells per ml after 2 days and continued to be suppressed to that level after 14 days. If the concentration of carvacrol or thymol were doubled (13.3 mM), either …

Fiber-Type Susceptibility To Eccentric Contraction-Induced Damage Of Hindlimb-Unloaded Rat Al Muscles, K. P. Vijayan, Joyce L. Thompson, Kris M. Norenberg, Robert H. Fitts, Danny A. Riley Mar 2001

Fiber-Type Susceptibility To Eccentric Contraction-Induced Damage Of Hindlimb-Unloaded Rat Al Muscles, K. P. Vijayan, Joyce L. Thompson, Kris M. Norenberg, Robert H. Fitts, Danny A. Riley

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Slow oxidative (SO) fibers of the adductor longus (AL) were predominantly damaged during voluntary reloading of hindlimb unloaded (HU) rats and appeared explainable by preferential SO fiber recruitment. The present study assessed damage after eliminating the variable of voluntary recruitment by tetanically activating all fibers in situ through the motor nerve while applying eccentric (lengthening) or isometric contractions. Muscles were aldehyde fixed and resin embedded, and semithin sections were cut. Sarcomere lesions were quantified in toluidine blue-stained sections. Fibers were typed in serial sections immunostained with antifast myosin and antitotal myosin (which highlights slow fibers). Both isometric and eccentric paradigms …

Characterization And Validation Of The Gp-3 Experimental Radar System, Benjamin L. Crossley Mar 2001

Characterization And Validation Of The Gp-3 Experimental Radar System, Benjamin L. Crossley

Theses and Dissertations

The experimental GP-3 radar system was originally designed and built under contract for the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). AFRL sought AFIT's support in characterizing the as delivered' performance of the GP-3. This research effort focused exclusively on software modifications and hardware validations related to the GP-3 post-processing mode. As modified, tested, and validated, the GP-3's post-processing mode is now fully operational. The GP-3 is capable of transmitting and receiving bandlimited (3.5 MHz) waveforms at X-Band frequencies. System characterization tests included, noise performance and frequency response. System noise performance characterization permitted establishment of the receiver 'noise floor' and enabled determination …

A Methodology For Simulating The Joint Strike Fighter's Prognostics And Health Management System, Michael E. Malley Mar 2001

A Methodology For Simulating The Joint Strike Fighter's Prognostics And Health Management System, Michael E. Malley

Theses and Dissertations

The Autonomic Logistics System Simulation (ALSim) model was developed to provide decision makers a tool to make informed decisions regarding the Joint Strike Fighter's (JSF) Autonomic Logistics System (ALS). The ALS provides real-time maintenance information to ground maintenance crews, supply depots, and air planners to efficiently manage the availability of JSF aircraft. This thesis effort focuses on developing a methodology to model the Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) component of ALS. The PHM component of JSF monitors the aircraft status. To develop a PHM methodology to use in ALSim a neural network approach is used. Notional JSF prognostic signals were …

Accommodation And Equal Liberty, Lisa Schultz Bressman Mar 2001

Accommodation And Equal Liberty, Lisa Schultz Bressman

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

How should legislatures respond to requests from religious individuals or institutions for exemptions to generally applicable laws? In Employment Division v. Smith, the Supreme Court held that the Free Exercise Clause does not require legislatures (federal or state) to honor such requests. The question remains whether they should do so on a voluntary basis. This is the problem of permissive accommodation-that is, accommodation of religious liberty as a matter of political discretion rather than constitutional compulsion. Put in the terms of this Symposium, it is the problem of accommodation in the public square. It is not immediately apparent why permissive …

Binding Of Urate And Caffeine To Hemocyanin Analyzed By Isothermal Titration Calorimetry., Michael Menze, Nadja Hellmann, Heinz Decker, Manfred Grieshaber Mar 2001

Binding Of Urate And Caffeine To Hemocyanin Analyzed By Isothermal Titration Calorimetry., Michael Menze, Nadja Hellmann, Heinz Decker, Manfred Grieshaber

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Haemocyanin serves as an oxygen carrier in the haemolymph of decapod crustaceans. The oxygen-binding behaviour of the pigment is modulated by the two major anaerobic metabolites, L-lactate and urate. The binding of these two metabolites to haemocyanin has been investigated mainly indirectly by following the effectorinduced changes in the oxygen-binding properties of the respiratory pigment. Only a few direct investigations of effector binding, employing ultracentrifugation techniques and equilibrium dialysis, have been carried out. No evidence for cooperative binding for either effector was detected using these methods. However, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) offers a useful tool to gain additional insight into …

Our New Children: The Surrogate Role Of Companion Animals In Women's Lives, Wendy G. Turner Mar 2001

Our New Children: The Surrogate Role Of Companion Animals In Women's Lives, Wendy G. Turner

The Qualitative Report

As the rate of pet ownership increases, companion animals are fulfilling a variety of roles in the lives of their humans. This article provides insight on the role that companion animals play in the lives of women. The women in this study showed stronger attachments to those animals that either preceded the birth of their children, or followed the children leaving home. This finding has potential implications for services provided to women by various helping professions.

Popular Culture, Kitsch As Camp, And Film, Benton Jay Komins Mar 2001

Popular Culture, Kitsch As Camp, And Film, Benton Jay Komins

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Popular Culture, Kitsch as Camp, and Film," Benton Jay Komins argues that at the crossroads of kitsch, between the irresistibly human and total spuriousness (Milan Kundera's and Clement Greenberg's respective definitions), lies the first serious glimmer of camp. Komins evaluates the connections between the phenomenon of kitsch and the phenomenon of camp through a theoretical discussion and the cinematic language of Percy Adlon's Rosalie Goes Shopping (1989-90). Critics like Susan Sontag and Andrew Ross, as well as Adlon's film, ask us to consider if camp is a pretentious expression of kitsch that belongs to the "artsy" demimonde. …

Memory And The Quest For Family History In One Hundred Years Of Solitude And Song Of Solomon, Susana Vega-González Mar 2001

Memory And The Quest For Family History In One Hundred Years Of Solitude And Song Of Solomon, Susana Vega-González

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article, "Memory and the Quest for Family History in One Hundred Years of Solitude and Song of Solomon," Susana Vega-González explores similarities between the novels of García Márquez and Morrison with a special focus on the use of memory and imagination. Based on theoretical models, Vega-Gonzálezas proposes that fictional representations are a means of rewriting history, a particular aspect of literay discourse. The texts under scrutiny constitute true quest stories of characters who search for their family history along their own identity amidst the dangers of capitalism and its excessive desire for progress and class ascendance. The break …

Super-Statutes, William N. Eskridge Jr., John A. Ferejohn Mar 2001

Super-Statutes, William N. Eskridge Jr., John A. Ferejohn

Duke Law Journal

Not all statutes are created equal. Appropriations laws perform important public functions, but they are usually short-sighted and have little effect on the law beyond the years for which they apportion public monies. Most substantive statutes adopted by Congress and state legislatures reveal little more ambition: they cover narrow subject areas or represent legislative compromises that are short-term fixes to bigger problems and cannot easily be defended as the best policy result that can be achieved. Some statutes reveal ambition but do not penetrate deeply into American norms or institutional practice. Even fewer statutes successfully penetrate public normative and institutional …

Effects On The Red-Cockaded Woodpecker From Various Spatial And Temporal Applications Of Management Practices, Chad F. Schroeder Mar 2001

Effects On The Red-Cockaded Woodpecker From Various Spatial And Temporal Applications Of Management Practices, Chad F. Schroeder

Theses and Dissertations

The Red-Cockaded Woodpecker (RCW) is an endangered species endemic to southeastern pine forests in the United States. RCWs are cooperative breeding birds that live together in clusters of old-growth pine trees in which they construct their nesting cavities. The cavities are constructed in living pines, which are predominantly longleaf pines. RCWs also forage upon older pines, preferably longleaf pine. The Endangered Species Act, along with other DoD regulations, requires DoD installations to protect the RCWs and restore their habitat. A popular management practice converts off-site (non-native) pines back to a region's indigenous pines. Conversion provides the best long term RCW …
