Behavioral Changes In Adult C57bl/6j Mice Following Prenatal Exposure To Ethanol., Kevin Wade Nunley
Behavioral Changes In Adult C57bl/6j Mice Following Prenatal Exposure To Ethanol., Kevin Wade Nunley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) labels children with physical, mental and behavioral deficits exposed to alcohol in utero. Current research indicates that timing of alcohol exposure of the embryo/fetus is a critical determinant of the behavioral deficits associated with FAS. This study represents a model for binge drinking, in which C57BL mouse embryos were exposed to alcohol during 2 separate critical periods of brain development, gestational day (GD) 7 or 8. As adults, the offspring were tested to determine if loco-motor activity and emotional reaction to a novel environment had been affected. Significant differences due to treatment and sex were …
The Effects Of Regional Planning On Suburuban Tokyo Metropolitan Areas, Michael Corbett
The Effects Of Regional Planning On Suburuban Tokyo Metropolitan Areas, Michael Corbett
Master's Projects
In the current economic downturn that Japan is experiencing, there are a number of issues concerning Tokyo suburban areas that face Japanese planners. Among them are the effects of the historical movements of the population into what is now the Tokyo Metropolitan Areah the transfer of power to local governments^; land availability and social problems caused by the changing demographics of an aging Japanese society in those areas. Unfortunately, during the rapid urbanization spurred by necessary development after World War II little thought was given to quality of life issues such as building design or area plans. Instead, emphasis was …

Hoosier Farmland Wildlife Notes: Windbreaks For Farms And Wildlife, Brian J. Macgowan, Brian K. Miller
Hoosier Farmland Wildlife Notes: Windbreaks For Farms And Wildlife, Brian J. Macgowan, Brian K. Miller
Historical Documents of the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service Archive
A home or farmstead windbreak is a strip of vegetation, generally consisting of multiple rows of trees and/or shrubs that shelters a residence and related structures from the negative effects of wind. While windbreaks can provide excellent food and cover for a variety of wildlife species, their primary function is to reduce wind velocity on the leeward side of the windbreak. The degree of protection depends upon the density and height of the windbreak. However, windbreaks will typically protect an area on their leeward side of 10 times the height of the windbreak (Figure 1). Benefits of windbreaks may even …
Western Culture And The Ambiguous Legacies Of The Pig, Benton Jay Komins
Western Culture And The Ambiguous Legacies Of The Pig, Benton Jay Komins
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his paper, "Western Culture and the Ambiguous Legacies of the Pig," Benton Jay Komins provides a cultural lineage of the pig by the example and reading of Piggies by the Beatles. Komins observes that Piggies enacts the possibilities of the ubiquitous pig in Western culture by juxtaposing swinish antics with interpretations of limitation and heartbreak thereby forcing listeners to blur the distinctions between struggle, unrequited love, and boorishness. Komins continues his discussion by locating this juxtaposition within the Western pantheon of real, metaphorical, and imaginary animals, where the pig is noted to have obsessively endured. Komins argues that through …

Chemical Analysis And Toxicity Study Of Macartney Rose, Bachlien Dang
Chemical Analysis And Toxicity Study Of Macartney Rose, Bachlien Dang
Theses (Pre-2016)
The Macartney rose (Rosa bracteata) is a noxious evergreen shrub, which grows in mild climates. This is a rose that will climb trees and smoother small buildings if given a chance! It is climbing and trailing from large clumps which may merge, forming impenetrable thickets. Its stems have thorns, which are nasty, hooked affairs, and leaves that are oval shape with serrate margin. The rose is also called "Fragrant White Climbing Rose". It blooms in late spring with smaller repeats throughout the rest of summer, and fruits ripen in late fall. The plant is a troublesome plant that grows abundantly …

Wetland Mitigation Banking In Tennessee: An Assessment Of Three Banks Performance, Matthew David Skilling
Wetland Mitigation Banking In Tennessee: An Assessment Of Three Banks Performance, Matthew David Skilling
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Each year, the nation as a whole loses nearly 58,000 acres of wetlands. The national goal of both the EPA and the Army Corps of Engineers is to achieve no net loss of wetlands. Wetlands law allows for mitigation of wetland impacts with the implied assumption that the mitigation will adequately compensate for the wetland loss. Mitigation banks are becoming a popular mitigation option. Mitigation banks, due to their large size and ample mitigation ratios, make a significant contribution to the national goal of no net loss. This study evaluates three mitigation banks currently operating in Tennessee. The evaluation is …

Weaving Accessibility And Art In Marilou Awiakta's Selu: Seeking The Corn-Mother's Wisdom., James David Basinger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In Selu: Seeking the Corn-MotherÆs Wisdom, Awiakta enlists the reader to participate on the path to knowing Selu, Corn-Mother to us all. In particular, the book provides a reader with a text that blends ancient Cherokee teachings of the oral tale of Selu with contemporary Western, Appalachian-American thought and experience. Awiakta adopts and adapts Selu in order to capture and express the essence of the tale within a contemporary American aesthetic.
Though Awiakta's approach is didactic, it rises above mere teaching to achieve an aesthetic characterized by accessibility, simultaneity, and liminality. She purposely combines stories, poems, teachings, histories, and cultural …

Iron Acquisition In Rhodococcus Erythrolpolis: The Isolation Of Mutant(S) That Do Not Produce A Siderophore., Jaishree M. Vellore
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Rhodococcus, a soil bacterium, displays a diverse range of metabolic capabilities with a number of potential practical applications. To exploit the metabolic potential of Rhodococcus, their basic physiology, genetics, and especially the acquisition of essential nutrients like iron, must be understood.
R. erythropolis strain IGTS8 releases a small compound called a siderophore, that scavenges ferric iron from the environment. To learn more about the genetic control of iron acquisition, mutant(s) defective in siderophore production were isolated. Mutants were generated, by inserting a mutagenic plasmid, pJCS506, into the bacterial cell using electroporation. The plasmid, which cannot replicate in these …

Chronic Exposure Of The European Corn Borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) To Cry1ab Bacillus Thuringiensis Toxin, Josette Chafaux, Maryvonne Seguin, Jeffrey J. Swanson, Denis Bourguet, Blair D. Siegfried
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Transgenic corn expressing the insecticidal toxin from Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner is gaining support as an effective control technology for use against lepidopteran pests, particularly European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis Hubner (Lepidoptera: Crambidae). However, there is concern that widespread adoption of transgenic plants will rapidly lead to B. thuringiensis toxin resistance. Thus, long-term selection of O. nubilalis populations with the Cry1Ab B. thuringiensis toxin has been undertaken in several laboratories in the United States and in Europe. We present results from two independent selection experiments performed in laboratories at the University of Nebraska and at the Institut National de la Recherche …

Identification Of A Cellular Protein That Interacts And Synergizes With The Rta (Orf50) Protein Of Kaposi’S Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus In Transcriptional Activation, Shizhen Wang, Shuhong Liu, Ming-Hoi Wu, Yunqi Geng, Charles Wood
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Lytic reactivation of Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), or human herpesvirus 8, from latency requires transcriptional transactivation by the viral protein RTA encoded by the ORF50 gene. Very little is known about how RTA functions and the cellular factors that may be involved in its transactivation function. Using the yeast two-hybrid system, we have identified a human cellular protein that can interact with KSHV RTA. The cellular protein, referred to as the human hypothetical protein MGC2663 by GenBank, is encoded by human chromosome 19. This protein is 554 amino acids (aa) in size and displays sequence similarity with members of the …

Will Voluntary And Educational Programs Meet Environmental Objectives? Evidence From A Survey Of New York Dairy Farms, Gregory L. Poe, Nelson L. Bills, B. C. Bellows, Patricia Crosscombe, Richard K. Koelsch, Michael J. Kreher, Peter Wright
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
This paper presents the results from a survey of New York dairy farms that links manure management practices and farmer willingness to participate in voluntary environmental programs, focusing on those operations that are not automatically designated as Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations. A wide divergence is found between actual and recommended manure management practices on individual dairy farms (high), the apparent ability of farms to divert financial resources to environmental practices (mixed), and the willingness to participate in voluntary programs at various annual costs per cow (low). These findings have policy implications for the USDA/USEPA National Strategy for Animal Feeding Operations.
The History Of Life In Nebraska: A Time-Travel Adventure, Paul A. Johnsgard
The History Of Life In Nebraska: A Time-Travel Adventure, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
It is difficult for humans, whose lives are measured in years and decades, to fathom the age of the Earth, whose history is patiently but inexorably written on thin pages of landscape, each lasting millions of years or more. As an exercise in Earth-time, let a single mile represent a million years. Thus .5 mile would represent 500,000 years, .10 mile equals 100,000 years, .01 mile (52 feet) equals 10,000 years; .001 mile (5.2 feet) equals 1,000 years, and about 6 inches equal 100 years. A decade would equal about half an inch. It is 450 miles from the 60th …

Evaluation Of Commonly Used Tribal And Traditional Remedies In Saudi Arabia, Baker H. Al-Awamy
Saudi Medical Journal
There are several compounds used in traditional prescriptions and as cosmetics, among several tribes in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Nothing pertinent in the literature exists regarding the components and health hazards of these compounds. There are no health education programs to warn the community especially high-risk populations (such as sickle cell anemia and diabetes mellitus patients) of the hazards involved in the use of the traditional preparations. Tradition and folk medicine continue to be used in many developing countries, including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. For physicians who are not accustomed to dealing with this entity, particularly when the …

Neuropsychological Functioning And Family Environment Of Children With Attention-Defecit/Hyperactivity Disorder And Comorbid Oppositional Defiant Disorder/Conduct Disorder, M. Catherine Yeager
Theses and Dissertations
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is hypothesized to be a disorder of executive functioning; however, results of studies comparing ADHD with control children using executive functioning measures are inconsistent, with some studies showing group differences while others do not. One limitation of these studies has been the failure to control for frequently occurring comorbid psychiatric conditions, such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Conduct Disorder (CD), in the ADHD groups. Previous studies have demonstrated that children with ADHD and comorbid CD or severe ODD perform significantly better on tests of cognitive/executive functioning when compared to children with ADHD only. Based on these …

Toxin-coregulated pilus (TCP) is a colonization factor required for cholera infection. It is not a strong immunogen when delivered in the context of whole cells, yet pilus subunits or TcpA derivative synthetic peptides induce protective responses. We examined the efficacy of immunizing mice with TCP conjugated to anti-class II monoclonal antibodies (MAb) with or without the addition of cholera toxin (CT) or anti-CD40 MAb to determine if the serologic response to TcpA could be manipulated. Anti-class II MAb-targeted TCP influenced the anti-TCP peptide serologic response with respect to titer and isotype. Responses to TcpA peptide 4 were induced with class …

An inducible promoter system provides a powerful tool for studying the genetic basis for virulence. A variety of inducible systems have been used in other organisms, including pXyl-xylR-inducible promoter, the pSpac-lacI system, and the arabinose-inducible PBAD promoter, but each of these systems has limitations in its application to Staphylococcus aureus. In this study, we demonstrated the efficacy of a tetracycline-inducible promoter system in inducing gene expression in S. aureus in vitro and inside epithelial cells as well as in an animal model of infection. Using the xyl/tetO promoter::gfpuvr fusion carried on a shuttle …
Age Structure, Species Composition And Succession In A Loess Hills Woodland., Peter Christian Phillips
Age Structure, Species Composition And Succession In A Loess Hills Woodland., Peter Christian Phillips
Student Work
The Loess Hills of central North America is a unique geologic region that historically was dominated by prairie with scattered oak trees in an environment of frequent fires. Following European settlement, woody-plant cover expanded throughout the Loess Hills so that today, existing prairies occur as remnants surrounded by an oak-dominated woodland. Large-, intermediate-, and small-sized trees were sampled along three adjacent lowland-to-upland belt-transects in western Iowa to document more accurately the dynamics of this woody expansion. Trees were cored or cross-sectioned and dated using standard dendrochronological techniques. Results characterize the pre-1850 woody canopy as consisting of a few widely scattered …

A Cladistic Analysis And Taxonomic Revision Of The Plesiosauria (Reptilia: Sauropterygia), F. Robin O’Keefe
Biological Sciences Faculty Research
The Plesiosauria (Reptilia: Sauropterygia) is a group of Mesozoic marine reptiles known from abundant material, with specimens described from all continents. The group originated very near the Triassic–Jurassic boundary and persisted to the end- Cretaceous mass extinction. This study describes the results of a specimen-based cladistic study of the Plesiosauria, based on examination of 34 taxa scored for 166 morphological characters. The Pliosauroidea is found to by polyphyletic due to the inclusion of the Polycotylidae; this second clade is instead a member of the Plesiosauroidea, and thus more closely related to elasmosaurs than to other ‘pliosaurs’. Characters of body proportion …

The Pathological Politics Of Criminal Law, William J. Stuntz
The Pathological Politics Of Criminal Law, William J. Stuntz
Michigan Law Review
Substantive criminal law defines the conduct that the state punishes. Or does it? If the answer is yes, it should be possible, by reading criminal codes (perhaps with a few case annotations thrown in), to tell what conduct will land you in prison. Most discussions of criminal law, whether in law reviews, law school classrooms, or the popular press, proceed on the premise that the answer is yes. Law reform movements regularly seek to broaden or narrow the scope of some set of criminal liability rules, always on the assumption that by doing so they will broaden or narrow the …
