End Of The Road: Sherman Was Tenacious, But Johnston Was The Better Negotiator, Peter S. Carmichael

Civil War Book Review

In the popular imagination, the image of Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant amicably discussing surrender terms in William McLean's parlor on April 9, 1865, symbolizes the end of the Civil War. The subsequent proceedings at Bennett Place, North Carolina, have often been an obscure footnote to the st....

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

The potential for aerobic methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) degradation was investigated with microcosms containing aquifer sediment and groundwater from four MTBE-contaminated sites characterized by oxygen-limited in situ conditions. MTBE depletion was observed for sediments from two sites (e.g., 4.5 mg/liter degraded in 15 days after a 4-day lag period), whereas no consumption of MTBE was observed for sediments from the other sites after 75 days. For sediments in which MTBE was consumed, 43 to 54% of added [U-14C]MTBE was mineralized to14CO2. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of these sediments indicated the enrichment of species closely …

Rising Cost Of Food Prices And Food Insecurity In Nigeria And Its Implication For Poverty Reduction, P. A. Okuneye Dec 2001

Rising Cost Of Food Prices And Food Insecurity In Nigeria And Its Implication For Poverty Reduction, P. A. Okuneye

Economic and Financial Review

Trade liberalization stimulated the growth of export of agricultura1 commodities in Nigeria white its serious implementation lasted. As usual with the country, the implementation of trade liberalization policies relaxed .with time. The boost in the ·· agricultural export sector took a down turn and with the advent of democracy, massive imports of luxury goods began to dominate the economic scene. In essence, over the last . is· years, that is, since 1986, when the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) came into being. the nation had witnessed a gross neglect of the food_ production sector. As such when food prices began to …

Long Chain Fatty Acids And Pc12 Cell Death, Joel E. Ulloth Dec 2001

Long Chain Fatty Acids And Pc12 Cell Death, Joel E. Ulloth

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Hypoxic-ischemic and traumatic injury to the central nervous system (CNS) are major sources of morbidity and mortality. The broad goal of this dissertation research is to gain a better understanding of the cascade of injury events that follow hypoxic-ischemic and traumatic injury and how they may contribute to the cell death. To accomplish this goal, one of the major secondary events common to both traumatic and hypoxic-ischemic injury was investigated: the prolonged hydrolysis of membrane phospholipid with the release of massive quantities of free (non-esterified) fatty acid (FFA). The central hypothesis of this dissertation research is that elevated levels of …

Development Of A Model For Infective Endocarditis Via Intravenous Injection And Tooth Infection Of Rats Using Pathogenic Bacteria, Shahrokh Shabahang Dec 2001

Development Of A Model For Infective Endocarditis Via Intravenous Injection And Tooth Infection Of Rats Using Pathogenic Bacteria, Shahrokh Shabahang

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Historically, focal areas of infection have been linked to a number of systemic ailments. During the early part of the 20th century, patients who were suffering from inexplicable diseases and who were suspected of having infected teeth were referred to the dentist for multiple extraction of their dentition. The discovery of antibiotics provided a false sense of security that the war against microorganisms is no longer a concern for mankind. However, more recently, it has become common belief that increasing numbers of systemic diseases are linked to chronic infections. Recovery of bacteria from representative tissues has led investigators to believe …

A Meta-Analysis And Risk Assessment Of Heavy Metal Uptake In Common Garden Vegetables., Trent David Lecoultre Dec 2001

A Meta-Analysis And Risk Assessment Of Heavy Metal Uptake In Common Garden Vegetables., Trent David Lecoultre

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Peer reviewed literature was searched to identify research pertaining to the uptake of heavy metals (As, Cd, Pb and Zn) by vegetables (cabbage, carrot, lettuce, and radish). The objectives of this research were to 1) determine the relationship between heavy metal concentrations in the soil and heavy metal concentrations in vegetables, and 2) determine the level of risk associated with exposure to heavy metals through ingestion of contaminated vegetables. Highly variable estimates and biologically implausible regression equations resulted from this meta-analysis. Exposure to arsenic through the ingestion of lettuce grown on contaminated soil significantly increases cancer risk, especially in children. …

Examining The Effects Of Deer Antler Velvet Supplementation On Muscular Strength, Performance, And Markers Of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness., Robyn Suzanne Percival

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: To examine the effects of deer antler velvet on muscular strength, performance, and markers of delayed onset muscle soreness following a 10-week resistance training period.

Participants: 16 resistance-trained males (18-35) volunteered.

Measures: DEXA, 1-RM, a power test, and a 70% performance trial were measured. Creatine kinase and self-reported soreness levels were measured following an eccentric trial.

Results: No pre-experimental significant differences existed between the groups for any of the variables measured. There were no significant differences between the groups regarding body composition, strength, muscular performance, or improvements in creatine kinase and soreness levels from pre to post-intervention. Both groups …

Sevilla, Puerto Y Puerta De Las Indias: El Motivo De La Indianización Y Su Papel En Las Comedias Sevillanas De Lope De Vega, Manuel Cornejo Dec 2001

Sevilla, Puerto Y Puerta De Las Indias: El Motivo De La Indianización Y Su Papel En Las Comedias Sevillanas De Lope De Vega, Manuel Cornejo

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Oikumene: La Geografía Híbrida De El Rey Gallinato De Andrés De Claramonte, Frederick A. De Armas Dec 2001

Oikumene: La Geografía Híbrida De El Rey Gallinato De Andrés De Claramonte, Frederick A. De Armas

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies
