Molecular Studies Involving The Rev Protein Of Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis Virus And Visna Virus., Bridget Michele Graves Dec 2001

Molecular Studies Involving The Rev Protein Of Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis Virus And Visna Virus., Bridget Michele Graves

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Caprine Arthirtis Encephalitis Virus (CAEV) and Visna Virus are two viruses of the lentivirus family. They encode three structural genes (gag, pol, and env) and two regulatory genes (rev and tat). The Rev protein regulates Gag, Pol and Env expression by transporting their mRNAs to the cytoplasm by binding to the RRE (Rev Response Element) found on their mRNAs. Previous studies have indicated that Rev may be toxic to transfected cells, overexpression of exogenous RREs or a better binding RRE can inhibit Rev activity and Rev-C (CAEV Rev) can trans-activate RRE-V (Visna Virus …

A Plea For Caution: A Response To Frederick Burkhardt, Phillip R. Sloan Dec 2001

A Plea For Caution: A Response To Frederick Burkhardt, Phillip R. Sloan

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Professor Burkhardt's detailed and exhaustive analysis of this curious letter has provided a classic case of the kind of problems one might face in textual editing. My own interest in this letter was first generated during my editing of the Hunterian lectures of Darwin's contemporary, Richard Owen. It also relates to my long-term interest in the importance of Darwin's work on invertebrate organisms and its relevance to the origins of his evolutionary theory. This work commenced during his early years in Edinburgh and persisted through the Beagle years and even beyond into his eight years of study of the barnacles. …

Habitat Utilization And Movement Patterns Of Subadult Largemouth Bass (Micropterus Salmoides) In The Ohio River, Elizabeth Marie Hoffman Dec 2001

Habitat Utilization And Movement Patterns Of Subadult Largemouth Bass (Micropterus Salmoides) In The Ohio River, Elizabeth Marie Hoffman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Ohio River electrofishing surveys identified embayments as preferred macrohabitat of subadult largemouth bass. Catch rates within macrohabitats were low ranging from 0.00--2.73 subadult bass/hour. Embayment electrofishing CPUE was higher than tributary or main channel except in spring, when tributary CPUE was highest.;Core use areas were calculated from biotelemetry data and ranged from 88--59,400 m2, representing 0.02--89.00% of available study location macrohabitat. Subadult bass movement was limited to nursery embayments or tributaries with infrequent movement to nearby main channel areas. Bass preferred a mixed microhabitat consisting of a combination of vegetation and woody debris. This mixed microhabitat was less common in …

The Deckers Creek drainage basin covers approximately 16,600 hectares (62.9 square miles) in Monongalia and Preston Counties of West Virginia. Throughout the twentieth century, this watershed has received high levels of pollution in several forms. A 1974 study examined the water chemistry in Deckers Creek over a six-month period at 29 sample points. Water samples from the same sites were collected and analyzed monthly from March 1999 through October 2000 for acidity, alkalinity, total iron, aluminum, manganese, and other metals, as well as for fecal coliform and fecal streptococcus concentrations. Most of the tributaries sampled in 1999--2000 showed reduced metal …

Studies Of The Mammalian Ovarian Endothelin System, Marietta Felicidad Wright Dec 2001

Studies Of The Mammalian Ovarian Endothelin System, Marietta Felicidad Wright

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In porcine ovaries, endothelin-1 (ET-1) may have an autocrine/paracrine role in follicular development. Endothelin-converting enzyme-1 (ECE-1) converts big endothelin-1 to ET-1. In situ hybridization was used to determine the ovarian compartment that synthesizes ECE-1. ECE-1 mRNA was detected in granulosa cells of large (10 mm) and medium (3 mm) antral follicles. This study, in conjunction with previous studies suggests a novel autocrine role of ET-1 as a possible local ovarian factor of follicular development. ET-1 may play a role during prostaglandin (PG) F2 alpha-induced luteal regression in the cow. Effects of PGF2 alpha treatment were examined during early and mid-luteal …

Parent-Infant Interactions During Acute Painful Procedures, Catherine Bradford Mcclellan Dec 2001

Parent-Infant Interactions During Acute Painful Procedures, Catherine Bradford Mcclellan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Despite the current recognition of infant procedural pain and distress, there is a dearth of research, both in the assessment and treatment literature, of infant procedural distress. This study examined how specific parent behaviors relate to infant procedural distress and whether this relation is mediated by birth order. Results indicated that females were rated as more distressed than were males, and that birth order did not prove to be a distinguishing factor in infant distress. Finally, while some behaviors appear to have a similar influence on both preschoolers' and infants' behaviors, parents' behavior during infants' distressing procedures were found to …

Elderly Narrative Reflections On The Contradictions In Turkish Village Family Life After Migration Of Adult Children, Roberta L. Coles Dec 2001

Elderly Narrative Reflections On The Contradictions In Turkish Village Family Life After Migration Of Adult Children, Roberta L. Coles

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

International and domestic labor migrations are changing the face of many countries. Those economic and demographic transitions collide with cultural expectations and ways of conducting intergenerational relations. This paper is a narrative analysis of some of those changes from the perspective of the elderly who remain behind in a small village in central Turkey. In particular, their narratives focus on filial expectations of sons and daughters, the status of mothers-in-law, health and economic well-being, and the future of village life. While these “left behind” elderly feel a loss of status and control and fear for their futures as their children …

Factors Affecting The Accumulation Of Pentosidine In The Skin Of Wild Birds, Richard Clair Chaney Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Birds have few reliable indicators of aging. Pentosidine (Ps), a biomarker of aging, is a product of non-enzymatic glycation, which accumulates in the tissues of an animal over its lifespan. The intent of this study was to determine if comparable change in Ps concentrations could be established in the skin of wild birds of known ages. Skin samples were obtained from the breast of 44 birds of various species. Foot webbing samples were obtained from 24 California Gulls. Collagen was measured by a hydroxyproline spectrophotometric method and Ps was quantified using reverse phase HPLC. Ps concentration in the skin and …

Prenatal Stress Alters Fear-Conditioned Behaviors And The Response To Serotonergic Drugs, William C. Griffin Iii Dec 2001

Prenatal Stress Alters Fear-Conditioned Behaviors And The Response To Serotonergic Drugs, William C. Griffin Iii

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Chronic, inescapable stress during pregnancy (i.e. prenatal stress) modifies the behavior of the adult offspring. Several behaviors were evaluated in adult prenatally stressed (PS) rats, most notably the acoustic startle response and behavioral inhibition (i.e. freezing). PS rats do not differ in baseline peak startle responding, or in the habituation of the peak startle response when compared to the non-prenatally stressed (CON) rats. However, PS rats have greater peak responses and longer latencies to reach the peak response following systemic doses of the 5-HT 1A agonist, 8-OH-DPAT, compared to CON rats. The PS rats had shorter latencies than the CON …

Transfer Of Heart Rate Feedback Training To Reduce Heart Rate Response To Laboratory Tasks, Jeffrey Louis Goodie

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Researchers have demonstrated that individuals can successfully reduce their heart rate (HR) response to a stressor when provided with heart rate feedback. However, it is unclear whether individuals can transfer HR reduction skills to stressors not used during HR feedback training. The present study used a multiple baseline, single subject design to examine the transfer of HR feedback training among six individuals. Participants were provided with HR feedback training during the presentation of a videogame, a mental arithmetic challenge, and a hand grip task until the participants reduced their HR to within 4 bpm of their resting HR or until …

Risk Mapping For Northern Kenya And Southern Ethiopia, D. Layne Coppock

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

We used results from 120 group interviews collected in 1998 to quantify how inhabitants across northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia perceive and rank various risks to their livelihoods. We also mapped risk patterns using Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates. Respondents recognized 15 sources of risk overall, with the most common being reliable access to food and water. Other risks were not mentioned by a majority of respondents and reflected diversity in local situations. Country of residence, wealth class, gender, and predominant means of food production (pastoralism, agro-pastoralism, and farming) influenced risk ranking. For example, wealthy males were most concerned about …

Ay Carumba!: The Simpsons. A Transnational Text To A Transnational Audience, Anita C. Ramdharry Dec 2001

Ay Carumba!: The Simpsons. A Transnational Text To A Transnational Audience, Anita C. Ramdharry

Theses and Dissertations

This paper discusses the popular U.S. cartoon-sitcom The Simpsons and the vast global audience the show has reached in its 12 years on air. First, it clarifies the message the creator, Matt Groening, and the writers are conveying: a left wing American ideology. This message is sent to a variety of communities around the globe. To understand the relationship between the show as a media text and its audience, it needs to be studied in terms of transnational interpretive communities. Studying the audience as transnational, allows all communities, on a large and a small-scale, to be analyzed. By using the …

Mechanisms Of Retroviral Replication, Timur O. Kabdulov Dec 2001

Mechanisms Of Retroviral Replication, Timur O. Kabdulov

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Specific encapsidation of viral RNA is an essential step of retroviral replication cycle. Extensive biochemical and genetic analyses suggest that majority of retroviruses employ similar mechanisms for specific RNA packaging. Better understanding of mechanisms of this process may help to develop new anti-retroviral drugs against such serious pathogens as human immunodeficiency virus types 1 and 2.;This study concerns with specific packaging of RNA by two simple retroviruses, murine leukemia virus (MLV) and spleen necrosis virus (SNV). SNV proteins can package RNA of both SNV and MLV with similar efficiency. In contrast, MLV proteins cannot package SNV RNA. NC domain was …

Pharmacological Regulation Of C-Myc Gene Expression In Human Breast Cancer Cells, Zaroui Karlen Melkoumian Dec 2001

Pharmacological Regulation Of C-Myc Gene Expression In Human Breast Cancer Cells, Zaroui Karlen Melkoumian

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Previous studies demonstrated that quinidine causes G1/G0 cell cycle arrest and inhibition of proliferation in MCF-7 human breast cancer cell line (Woodfork, K. et al., 1995). The goal of studies reported here was to understand the molecular mechanisms of c-myc gene regulation by quinidine. C-myc is one of the most common oncogene aberrations in breast cancers (Deming, S. L. et al., 2000). C-myc functions include regulation of cell cycle, proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. The results of these studies demonstrated that quinidine causes rapid (within 1 hour) suppression of Myc protein and mRNA levels that precedes the quinidine-induced G1 cell cycle …

Management Research On Fashion: A Review And Evaluation, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In recentyears there has been growing interest and debate amongst scholars with respectto the notion that management ideas are subject to recurrent swings in fashionin the same way that aesthetic aspects of life, such as clothing styles andmusical tastes, are characterized by surges of popularity and then decline. A numberof reasons for the increasing importance of management fashion as an area ofresearch have been identified. First, each wave of fashionable thinking inmanagement is seen as altering accepted definitions of the character of themodern organizational ideal with the consequence that few people who work inorganizations remain untouched by the consequence of …
