The Effects Of Sensory Stimulation On Students With Traumatic Brain Injury As Compared To Students With Developmental Disabilities, Eileen M. Bertolino-Russell

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to determine if Sensory Stimulation had an effect on the motor development and communication skills of the students with Traumatic Brain Injury as compared to the students with Developmental Disabilities. Four students participated in this study: two were Traumatic Brain Injured and the other two were Developmentally Disabled.

To establish change over time the students' communication and motor skills were observed individually three times a week for four weeks. Eight domains were covered; responses could be verbal or non-verbal.

The results indicated that Sensory Stimulation proved to be beneficial because all four students showed …

Eyes Of The Mirror, Margaret Jane Emerson Apr 2001

Eyes Of The Mirror, Margaret Jane Emerson

Dissertations and Theses

Eyes of the Mirror is a memoir of transition. Chronologically, it begins with a kind of death in 1996 when the author was forty-eight. Exhausted and disillusioned, she ended her first life as a successful but financially struggling potter, writer, and T'ai Chi instructor. Over the course of twenty-four years, the strain of following a bliss that lay outside of the economy had worn her out. As a first step in the creation of a new life, she earned a certificate in teaching English and accepted a job in South Korea. After two harsh and challenging years there, she returned …

Persistent Fontanelles In Rodent Skulls, Scott Lyell Gardner, Sydney Anderson Apr 2001

Persistent Fontanelles In Rodent Skulls, Scott Lyell Gardner, Sydney Anderson

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Persistent fenestrae occur between frontal or parietal bones in skulls of various rodents, especially species of Andinomys and Ctenomys. The frequency of occurrence and the shape and position of the fenestrae may vary with age or among individuals, populations, and species. Different families and species from both high and low elevations exhibit fenestrae. They have arisen in several different evolutionary lineages. Genetic factors contribute, but no clear functional significance of the fenestrae has been established.

Group I Metabotropic Glutamate Receptors Are Expressed In The Chicken Retina And By Cultured Retinal Amacrine Cells, Kathryn M. Kreimborg, Martha L. Lester, Kathryn F. Medler, Evanna L. Gleason

Faculty Publications

Glutamate is well established as an excitatory neurotransmitter in the vertebrate retina. Its role as a modulator of retinal function, however, is poorly understood. We used immunocytochemistry and calcium imaging techniques to investigate whether metabotropic glutamate receptors are expressed in the chicken retina and by identified GABAergic amacrine cells in culture. Antibody labeling for both metabotropic glutamate receptors 1 and 5 in the retina was consistent with their expression by amacrine cells as well as by other retinal cell types. In double-labeling experiments, most metabotropic glutamate receptor 1-positive cell bodies in the inner nuclear layer also label with anti-GABA antibodies. …

The Mcdonaldization Of American Agriculture, Jeffrey S. Royer Apr 2001

The Mcdonaldization Of American Agriculture, Jeffrey S. Royer

Cornhusker Economics

In his best-selling book, Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal (Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co., 2001), journalist Eric Schlosser takes aim at the fast food industry, leveling a broad array of charges against it. According to Schlosser, the success of the fast food industry has transformed the American diet, landscape, economy, workforce and popular culture, and is responsible for a national epidemic of obesity, the propagation of an unskilled and poorly paid workforce and the exploitation of teenagers and minorities. It also has contributed to the restructuring of American agriculture.

Lipid Biochemistry Of House Wren Egg Yolk And Possible Effects On Incubation Period, Brian J. Payne '01 Apr 2001

Lipid Biochemistry Of House Wren Egg Yolk And Possible Effects On Incubation Period, Brian J. Payne '01

Honors Projects

House Wrens (Troglodytes aedon) are distributed throughout North and South America. As has been observed in many avian species, populations of House Wrens in the tropics have longer egg incubation periods than populations in temperate regions. The purpose of this study was to characterize incubation periods of a temperate population of House Wrens and to conduct a preliminary chemical analysis of the yellow and white yolk layers of House Wren eggs. The eggs were collected from a breeding population in Central Illinois from June-August 2000. Avian yolk is composed of yellow and white components, which are laid down in alternating …

A Tutorial: Use Of The Who Icidh-2 For Determining Aural Rehabilitation Goals, Nancy Muscato Patterson Apr 2001

A Tutorial: Use Of The Who Icidh-2 For Determining Aural Rehabilitation Goals, Nancy Muscato Patterson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this project was to implement the newly revised International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICIDH-2) developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), to establish specific aural rehabilitation goals. Five graduate clinicians in speech language pathology and audiology interviewed ten participants with adult onset hearing loss. A modified version of the General Questions for Participation and Activities (i.e., a structured interview technique) from the ICIDH-2 Checklist, was developed. Prior to completing this checklist, the students attended a brief training session to become familiar with the major components of the ICIDH-2, specifically the ICIDH-2 Checklist. Completion of the …
