Computer Integrated Endoscopic Simulator For Training In Esophagogastroduodenoscopy, Decho Surangsrirat Apr 2001

Computer Integrated Endoscopic Simulator For Training In Esophagogastroduodenoscopy, Decho Surangsrirat

Open Access Dissertations

We propose a computer integrated endoscopic simulator for training in upper endoscopy as a low-cost alternative to the traditional training methods and virtual reality simulators. The use of a real endoscope in conjunction with our simulator and computer system in an actual operating room setup makes the training environment similar to a real procedure. Endoscopic surgery is the performance of surgery through a small incision with the aid of special medical equipment called a flexible endoscope. The advantage of this technique over open surgery is that there is significantly less operative trauma, resulting in less pain and a shorter recovery …

Cognitive And Physiological Processes Underlying Written Disclosure, Leila Setork '01 Apr 2001

Cognitive And Physiological Processes Underlying Written Disclosure, Leila Setork '01

Honors Projects

The aim of this research was to examine the underlying cognitive processes as well as the physiological outcomes of disclosing traumatic events. Epstein (1973, 1991, 1994, 1998) has argued the existence of two fundamental modes of cognitive processing: a rational mode that involves higher brain functioning and is reason-oriented, and an experiential mode that involves lower brain functioning and is pleasure-pain oriented. We examined the hypothesis that fact-based disclosure invokes rational processing while emotion-based disclosure invokes experiential processing by examining participants' physiological reactivity during as well as their behavior in a decision-making task following written disclosure. Based on previous findings …

Introduced Wildlife Of Oregon And Washington , Gary W. Witmer, Jeffrey C. Lewis Apr 2001

Introduced Wildlife Of Oregon And Washington , Gary W. Witmer, Jeffrey C. Lewis

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Each species of wildlife occurs as part of an ecosystem, interacting in many ways with other plant and animal species in that system as well as with the abiotic components such as soil, air, water, and other substrates. The array of wildlife species around the globe has been shaped by geological and climatological events as well as by eons of evolution and natural selection. Species have come and gone and those remaining have, in most cases, co-evolved or co-adapted with many other species so that relatively stable, and often complex, relationships exist. Usually, a great many niches have been carved …
