Social Organization And Spatial Relationships In Coastal River Otters: Assessing Form And Function Of Social Groups, Sex-Biased Dispersal, And Gene Flow, Gail Marie Blundell May 2001

Social Organization And Spatial Relationships In Coastal River Otters: Assessing Form And Function Of Social Groups, Sex-Biased Dispersal, And Gene Flow, Gail Marie Blundell

Biological Sciences

River otters (Lontra canadensis) inhabiting marine environments are top-level predators foraging in the nearshore ecosystem and recently have been recognized as indicators of environmental health. Otters were extirpated from much of their historic distribution because of exposure to pollution and urbanization, resulting in expansive reintroduction programs that continue today. Without an understanding of the influence of factors such as social structure, mating system, or sex-biased dispersal on genetic variation and gene flow among populations, effects of local extirpation and the potential for natural recolonization (i.e., the need for reintroductions) cannot be determined. The objective of this study was to assess …

Miscellaneous Publication 009/2001 - Pistachios Western Australia An Income Producing Reforestation Opportunity For The Wheatbelt, Andrew Quinn

Horticulture published reports

Faced with a rising water-table, salt and acid land impacts, the Western Australian Wheatbelt requires significant changes to traditional farming system models.

Part of this drive towards improved sustainability is the need to re-plant substantial areas to tree belts or blocks. One of the limiting factors in the widescale adoption of on-farm tree planting is the narrow range of opportunities to generate income from these sites.

This report presents a model for the development of a Pistachio nut industry with production integrated into existing Wheatbelt farming systems. In addition to offering significant environmental benefits, the Pistachio tree offers the opportunity …

The Growing Quiet On The Evening Train: Poems, Bill Bogart May 2001

The Growing Quiet On The Evening Train: Poems, Bill Bogart

Dissertations and Theses

Any abstract discussion of poetry must enlist a terminology wholly inadequate to its purpose, which is purportedly to clarify but which often serves to obfuscate or disempower the original language. The terms enlisted here for such purpose are "self" and "other." This collection of poems explores the distances and affinities between the self and others or other-ness. Exploration initiates movement. Because the self cannot arrive at the other, the poems resist finality, but seek to attain an economy of motion and direction that creates tension with a poem's necessity to come to a temporal conclusion. This gathering of momentum is …

Design History And The Human Experience, Lisa Bodenstedt May 2001

Design History And The Human Experience, Lisa Bodenstedt

Theses

This thesis, Design History and the Human Experience, is a course which offers a new approach to teaching design history by presenting the material through a historical/popular culture lens. The research and content organizing methodology will show how design is part of a larger context reflecting and creating the culture we live in. When design history includes an emphasis on the historical and cultural contexts, the designer's work takes on deeper meaning and relevance. The underlying philosophy of the thesis, Design History and The Human Experience, argues that design does not occur in a vacuum but emerges from many social, …

Controls On Floc Size In A Continental Shelf Bottom Boundary Layer, Paul S. Hill, George Voulgaris, John H. Trowbridge May 2001

Controls On Floc Size In A Continental Shelf Bottom Boundary Layer, Paul S. Hill, George Voulgaris, John H. Trowbridge

Faculty Publications

Simultaneous in situ observations of floc size, waves, and currents in a continental shelf bottom boundary layer do not support generally accepted functional relationships between turbulence and floc size in the sea. In September and October 1996 and January 1997, two tripods were deployed in 70 m of water on the continental shelf south of Woods Hole, Massachusetts. On one a camera photographed particles in suspension 1.2 m above the bottom that had equivalent circular diameters larger than 250 um, and on the other, three horizontally displaced acoustic current meters measured flow velocity 0.35 m above the bottom. The …

Methods Of Diagnosing A Pathology Characterized By A Cell Proliferative Disorder Associated With Connective Tissue Growth Factor, Gary R. Grotendorst, Douglass Douglass M. Bradham

USF Patents

The present invention provides a novel polypeptide, Connective Tissue Growth Factor (CTGF), polynucleotides encoding CTGF, and including 5' and 3' untranslated nucleotides, antibodies reactive with CTGF and means for producing CTGF. Also provided are diagnostic and therapeutic methods for using CTGF, as well as an assay for identifying compositions which affect the expression of CTGF polynucleotide. The invention provides a novel TGF-.beta. responsive element upstream of the polynucleotide encoding CTGF structural gene.

The Man Behind The Bunny: Interview With Eduardo Kac, Sheila A. Malone

SWITCH

An interview with artist Eduardo Kac about his work with transgenic art; specifically the work with Alba, the glowing rabbit. The interview focuses on Kac’s processes and collaborations with Louis-Marie Houdebine. Kac and Houdebine worked together in France to genetically create Alba’s glowing fur. Eventually, the collaboration came to an end and resulted in a legal battle between Eduardo and the Director of the Institute in which Alba was created, as they did not release her into Eduardo's care. The article concludes with a discussion of the use of a rabbit specifically for this project.

Watershed Based Analysis For Water Quality Management Within The Escatawpa River System, Gerrod Wayne Kilpatrick May 2001

Watershed Based Analysis For Water Quality Management Within The Escatawpa River System, Gerrod Wayne Kilpatrick

Theses and Dissertations

Assessment of water quality within the Escatawpa River system was accomplished utilizing the Better Assessment Science Integrating Point and Nonpoint Sources (BASINS 2.0) to develop the watershed model, and the CE-QUAL-W2 software to develop the estuary model. The watershed model was utilized to quantify both hydrodynamic and water quality (fecal coliforms) characteristics of the watershed for a simulation period spanning from 1990 through 1999. Herein, calibration and application results are presented for watershed and estuary simulations made in an uncoupled manner. The models were developed such that loose coupling of watershed and estuary models can be accomplished as a subsequent …

Watershed, Hydrodynamic, And Water Quality Models For Total Maximum Daily Load St. Louis Bay Watershed Mississippi, Noor Baharim Hashim May 2001

Watershed, Hydrodynamic, And Water Quality Models For Total Maximum Daily Load St. Louis Bay Watershed Mississippi, Noor Baharim Hashim

Theses and Dissertations

In the development of the watershed, hydrodynamic, and water quality models for St. Louis Bay in Mississippi, the Better Assessment Science Integrating Point and Nonpoint Sources (BASINS 2.0) - Nonpoint Source Model (NPSM) was selected as the watershed model and the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC) which includes hydrodynamic and water quality models was selected as the Bay model. Watershed model calibration was initially accomplished utilizing historical data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), and Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL). The watershed model simulated nonpoint source flow and …
