Microbiotic Assessment Of An Upflow Anaerobic/Aerobic Swine Treatment Process, Robert Earl Mcclain May 2001

Microbiotic Assessment Of An Upflow Anaerobic/Aerobic Swine Treatment Process, Robert Earl Mcclain

Theses and Dissertations

Confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) relating to swine and their resulting odors continues to be an issue of concern. The primary sources of odors from a CAFO include general ventilation of the confinement house, the anaerobic lagoon, and the land application of lagoon sludge. This paper focuses on lagoon wastewaters, but the results therein could have influence on the other two aforementioned areas. An advanced upflow anaerobic/aerobic reactor system was developed to determine its impact on microbial activities that ultimately result in offensive odors. The microbial activity of SRB (sulfate-reducing bacteria) and hydrogen-sulfide production was monitored closely in each ?zone?, …

Multidisciplinarity And Cognitive Science, Barbara Von Eckardt May 2001

Multidisciplinarity And Cognitive Science, Barbara Von Eckardt

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The aim of Schunn, Crowley and Okada’s (1998) study is to address the question of whether the current state of cognitive science, as represented by Cognitive Science and the Cognitive Science Society, “reflects the multidisciplinary ideals of its foundation.” To properly interpret and respond to their results, we need to ask a prior question: What is cognitive science’s multidisciplinary ideal? There are at least two conceptions—a “localist” conception, which seems to be implicit in Schunn, Crowley and Okada’s discussion, and a “holist” conception. I argue that while both have been endorsed by some cognitive scientists, there are reasons for preferring …

Seventeen Days In The Cat Bird Seat, Meggin Crom May 2001

Seventeen Days In The Cat Bird Seat, Meggin Crom

Dissertations and Theses

Humor and laughter are essential to the happiness of humankind. Too often we are bogged down in the mire of despair and misery, unable to see the humor in our own folly.

This thesis follows several groups of wacky characters on a cross country adventure. The story begins with the death and subsequent reincarnation of the hermetic genius, Archibald Constable. The recently departed recluse bequeaths his estate to Loretta Pontelli, a loudmouth Italian woman, who feels morally obligated to find Archibald's next of kin. Once she discovers a birth announcement she contacts her ex-husband, J.P. Kittenger, a private detective who …

Mirror Self-Recognition In The Bottlenose Dolphin: A Case Of Cognitive Convergence, Diana Reiss, Lori Marino May 2001

Mirror Self-Recognition In The Bottlenose Dolphin: A Case Of Cognitive Convergence, Diana Reiss, Lori Marino

Sentience Collection

The ability to recognize oneself in a mirror is an exceedingly rare capacity in the animal kingdom. To date, only humans and great apes have shown convincing evidence of mirror self-recognition. Two dolphins were exposed to reflective surfaces, and both demonstrated responses consistent with the use of the mirror to investigate marked parts of the body. This ability to use a mirror to inspect parts of the body is a striking example of evolutionary convergence with great apes and humans.

The Impact Of Hiv/Aids On Food Production (Focusing Mainly On Rural Farms In Sub-Saharan Africa) And The Effects On The Supply, Demand, And Wages Of Farm Labor, Muhammad Zubair Qamar May 2001

The Impact Of Hiv/Aids On Food Production (Focusing Mainly On Rural Farms In Sub-Saharan Africa) And The Effects On The Supply, Demand, And Wages Of Farm Labor, Muhammad Zubair Qamar

Theses & Honors Papers

Utilizing empirical data from studies conducted mainly by international organizations, such as the UNAIDS and the Food and Agriculture Organization , the thesis aims to strengthen the hypothesis that the higher the frequency of HIVIAIDS, mainly in rural African farm communities, the higher the impact there is on food production. Moreover, the supply, demand, and wages of farm labor are also affected by HIV/AIDS. To give a background of the conditions of disease, the first part of the thesis gives an overview of the history of disease. The history and possible origins of HIV/AIDS are delved into, after …

Univercity News (2001-05-07)

UniverCity News, 1998-2001

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
