Effects Of Stable Flies (Diptera: Muscidae) On Weight Gains Of Grazing Yearling Cattle, J.B. Campbell, S.R. Skoda, Dennis Berkebile, D. J. Boxler, G.D. Thomas, D. C. Adams, R. Davis May 2001

Effects Of Stable Flies (Diptera: Muscidae) On Weight Gains Of Grazing Yearling Cattle, J.B. Campbell, S.R. Skoda, Dennis Berkebile, D. J. Boxler, G.D. Thomas, D. C. Adams, R. Davis

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Differences in weight gains caused by stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.), on grazing yearling steer/calves averaged 0.2 kg per steer in a 3-yr study on canyon range pastures in West Central Nebraska. Stable fly numbers averaged 0.85 per front leg on treated calves and 3.64 per front leg on control calves. In 2 of the 3 yr after the grazing trials were completed, the calves were placed in a feedlot and fed a finishing ration. Compensatory gain did not occur in the feedlot after the stable fly stress was removed.

Monitoring Raccoon Populations To Maximize Efficacy Of A Fixed-Cost Control Budget For Reducing Predation On Sea Turtle Nests, Richard M. Engeman, Bernice Constantin, Ryan Noel, John D. Woolard May 2001

Monitoring Raccoon Populations To Maximize Efficacy Of A Fixed-Cost Control Budget For Reducing Predation On Sea Turtle Nests, Richard M. Engeman, Bernice Constantin, Ryan Noel, John D. Woolard

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The fundamental focus for the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge on Florida's east coast is to provide and protect nesting habitat for three threatened or endangered sea turtle species. Nesting and hatching by three sea turtle species spans from early spring to fall each year. Left unchecked, predation by raccoons would destroy a high proportion of turtle nests. Raccoon removal is applied to reduce nest predation, but available funding only allows for about a one person-month control contract. We maximized the economical efficiency of this control budget by using a passive tracking index to: 1) optimize the timing and strategy …

A Hermeneutic Study: Adult Survivors' Lived Experiences Of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Traci Weise May 2001

A Hermeneutic Study: Adult Survivors' Lived Experiences Of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Traci Weise

Theses and Graduate Projects

Sexual violations perpetrated upon children disrupt the normative development of interpersonal relationships throughout adulthood. This hermeneutic, qualitative study analyzed three adult women survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Survivors of past sexual abuse experience posttraumatic effects, emotional scars, and unstable relationships built on minimal trust, leaving adults with thoughts of inadequacy in interpersonal relationships. Implications for Social Work practice and policy are to recognize and validate the protective coping mechanisms used by adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, influence change in their therapy, and provide new skills to maintain healthy relationships.

This study attempts to discover, discuss, and interpret the effects …

Solid Phase Extraction Gas Chromatography/Electron Capture Detector Method For The Determination Of Organochlorine Pesticides In Wildlife Whole Blood, S. A. Volz, J. J. Johnston, D. L. Griffin May 2001

Solid Phase Extraction Gas Chromatography/Electron Capture Detector Method For The Determination Of Organochlorine Pesticides In Wildlife Whole Blood, S. A. Volz, J. J. Johnston, D. L. Griffin

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

A gas chromatographic method for the analysis of 10 organochlorine pesticides in 0.5 mL of whole blood is described. Sample preparation involved an ethyl ether and hexane extraction, followed by a silica solid phase extraction cleanup. The pesticides are quantified by gas chromatography/electron capture detection. Method limits of detection ranged from 1.1 to 5.2 μ g/L. The mean and standard deviation for the recovery of 10 pesticides was 97.9 ( 5.5%. Recoveries from whole blood were comparable to recoveries from plasma. This indicates that the preparation of plasma is unnecessary for the quantification of organochlorine pesticides in blood. This approach …

Oklahoma!, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department May 2001

Oklahoma!, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department

2000-2001 Season

The first collaboration of famed partners Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, Oklahoma! set the American musical theatre standard. Set in Western Indian Territory just after the turn of the 20th Century, the spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the backdrop for the love story between Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a beautiful farm girl. The road to true love is anything but smooth, but there is no doubt that these two romantics will succeed in making a life together. As the road to romance and the road to statehood converge, Curly and Laurey are poised …

Phytochemistry And Chemosystematics Of Artemisia Arctica In Alaska, Chance W. Riggins May 2001

Phytochemistry And Chemosystematics Of Artemisia Arctica In Alaska, Chance W. Riggins

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Artemisia L. (Asteraceae - Anthemideae) is a large and taxonomically complex genus occurring widely throughout the northern hemisphere. Chemical investigations in this genus have mainly been stimulated by the economic and/or medicinal importance of many of its members. This chemical knowledge has also provided useful criteria for resolving systematic uncertainties within the genus. Alaskan Artemisia species are little known chemically despite their historic and contemporary medicinal use. Therefore, an investigation of the chemistry of Alaskan Artemisia arctica was initiated with the dual purpose of searching for structurally novel and/or biologically active compounds and contributing additional criteria for systematic studies of …

Evaluation Of Wolf Density Estimation From Radiotelemetry Data, John W. Burch May 2001

Evaluation Of Wolf Density Estimation From Radiotelemetry Data, John W. Burch

Biological Sciences

Density estimation of wolves (Canis lupus) requires a count of individuals and an estimate of area those individuals inhabit. With radiomarked wolves, the count is straightforward but estimation of area is more difficult and often given inadequate attention. The population area, based on the mosaic of pack territories, is influenced by sampling intensity similar to individual home ranges. If sampling intensity is low, population area will be underestimated and wolf density will be inflated. Using data from studies in Denali National Park and Preserve, I investigated these relationships using Monte Carlo simulation to evaluate effects of radiolocation effort and number …

Student Diversity And Curriculum In The Basic Public Speaking Course: Implications For Creating An Advanced Public Speaking Course, Shannon E. Sehnert May 2001

Student Diversity And Curriculum In The Basic Public Speaking Course: Implications For Creating An Advanced Public Speaking Course, Shannon E. Sehnert

Communication

This research study employs qualitative narrative analysis in order to develop an understanding of the lived experience of Graduate Teaching Assistants teaching the basic public speaking course at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Interviews with Graduate Teaching Assistants reveal three themes. First, it is important to recognize and address each student's abilities and experience as unique. Second, based on individual students' abilities and experience, they should be allowed to select and define their own speaking situations and goals. Finally, students must have a comfortable and collaborative environment in which to experiment, practice, and respond to the choices made by their …

The "Bridge Party" Of E.M. Forster's 'A Passage To India': Where Apollo And Kali Yearn To Embrace From Opposite Sides Of The Gulf, Mark Undeberg May 2001

The "Bridge Party" Of E.M. Forster's 'A Passage To India': Where Apollo And Kali Yearn To Embrace From Opposite Sides Of The Gulf, Mark Undeberg

English

In 1978, Edward Said published 'Orientalism, ' a revolutionary study that invited new interpretations of literature and particularly of works written by Western authors about the East. Postcolonialist and feminist critics embraced many of Said's theories, including one that implies that the West equates the East with femininity and that such a view necessarily reveals the West's prejudice against both the East and with femininity in general. This thesis does not argue the overall validity of Said's theories. Rather, it explores the treatment of 'femininity' in E.M. Forster's 'A passage to India' with the aim of determining the validity of …

Trophic Dynamics Of Pinniped Populations In Alaska Using Stable Carbon And Nitrogen Isotope Ratios, Amy Christia Hirons May 2001

Trophic Dynamics Of Pinniped Populations In Alaska Using Stable Carbon And Nitrogen Isotope Ratios, Amy Christia Hirons

Marine Biology

Trophic changes in populations of Stellar sea lions (Eumetorias jubatus), northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) and harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) in the eastern Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska were studied using stable isotope analysis. Declining populations of all three species of pinnipeds prompted this study to determine if changes in diet, likely resulting from food limitation, contributed to the declines. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios were analyzed in the vibrissae (whiskers) and body tissues of pinnipeds from 1993-1998 and compared with muscle tissue from prey species during the same time period to determine pinniped trophic dynamics. Vibrissae growth …

Saxitoxins: Role Of Prokaryotes, Tracie Renee Baker May 2001

Saxitoxins: Role Of Prokaryotes, Tracie Renee Baker

Marine Biology

Saxitoxins, the toxins associated with paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), are synthesized by dinoflagellates, cyanobacteria, and possibly bacteria. The specific objectives of this study were to determine growth conditions that promote high and low levels of toxin accumulation in Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (cyanobacterium) and Pseudomonas stutzeri (bacterium). Putative saxitoxins of P. stutzeri identified by HPLC-FLD in this study, and previously by other laboratories, were determined to be 'imposters' based on their chemical and physical properties, suggesting that this bacterium may not synthesize PSP toxins. In the cyanobacterium, toxin production was enhanced under higher light intensities and temperatures. Toxin accumulation reached maximal levels …

Boundary Waters, Michael Evan Cowger May 2001

Boundary Waters, Michael Evan Cowger

Dissertations and Theses

This collection of poems explores boundaries and migrations, both in the natural world and in human relationships. These poems also consider the role a 'sense of place' plays in poetry, and the ways in which it informs consciousness.

The collection is divided into three sections: Migrations, Boundary Waters, and Flight Pattern. Part one, Migrations, examines developmental stages in the formation of self and in the broader circle of human history. Part two, Boundary Waters, explores familial relationships and traces a movement outward from self, while examining its connection to landscape. (The Boundary Waters Canoe Area is a part of The …

Dna Mismatch Repair At An Oncogenic Hotspot Correlated With Phase Of The Cell Cycle And Environmentally Relevant Concentrations Of The Arctic Pollutant P, P'-Dde, Josephine Simonetti May 2001

Dna Mismatch Repair At An Oncogenic Hotspot Correlated With Phase Of The Cell Cycle And Environmentally Relevant Concentrations Of The Arctic Pollutant P, P'-Dde, Josephine Simonetti

Biological Sciences

Part I: Mismatch repair in G₁ synchronized mammalian cells. Deficiencies in DNA mismatch repair have been found in hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer (HNPCC), as well as in sporadic cancers, illustrating the importance of this single repair system in maintaining genomic integrity. In bacteria, this repair system functions primarily, after DNA replication, in the correction of polymerase base insertion errors and in mammalian cells it was also assumed that the mismatch repair system functioned within a similar timeframe. However, DNA mismatches occur ubiquitously and their repair before DNA replication is of paramount importance for faithful genome copying. We investigated the activity …

Phylogenetic Relationships Of The Oxytropis Campestris And Oxytropis Arctica Complexes In Alaska Inferred From Non-Coding Nuclear Dna And Rapd Data, Janet Lynn Jorgensen May 2001

Phylogenetic Relationships Of The Oxytropis Campestris And Oxytropis Arctica Complexes In Alaska Inferred From Non-Coding Nuclear Dna And Rapd Data, Janet Lynn Jorgensen

Biological Sciences

The taxonomy and evolutionary relationships of the Oxytropis arctica and Oxytropis campestris complexes in Alaska are poorly understood. Taxonomic disagreement has centered on which morphological characters are important in circumscribing these taxa. Several of these taxa are endemic to Alaska, including Oxytropis arctica var. barnebyana, which is currently of conservation concern. Internal transcribed spacer sequences and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA markers were employed to circumscribe these taxa. Both lines of evidence revealed one major dichotomy dividing northern populations from western populations. There is weak support for traditional taxonomies. Morphological characters used to separate these taxa do not assort to either …

Hepatitis B In Arctic Ground Squirrels (Spermophylus Parryi): Epidemiology And Population Biology, Philip John Joy May 2001

Hepatitis B In Arctic Ground Squirrels (Spermophylus Parryi): Epidemiology And Population Biology, Philip John Joy

Biological Sciences

Using a mark-recapture design, an epidemiological investigation of Hepatitis B was performed on four colonies of Spermophylus parryi. Animals were trapped, marked and bled. Serum samples were screened for Hepatitis B markers. Program MARK was used to estimate survival rates. Prevalence rates ranged over 55% and 1999 rates were 10% higher than 1998. Vertical transmission of the virus was not observed and juveniles were unaffected by the mother's hepatitis status. Immigrants had lower prevalence rates than residents and incidence rates accelerated throughout the study. Survival was highest during the over-winter period and adult rates were lower in 1999. Recovered animals …

Molecular And Morphological Perspectives On Post-Glacial Colonization Of Clethrionomys Rutilus And Clethrionomys Gapperi In Southeast Alaska, Amy Marie Runck May 2001

Molecular And Morphological Perspectives On Post-Glacial Colonization Of Clethrionomys Rutilus And Clethrionomys Gapperi In Southeast Alaska, Amy Marie Runck

Biological Sciences

Pleistocene events had a significant impact on the geographic distributions of high latitude organisms. Recently deglaciated, Southeast Alaska has been colonized by two species of red-backed voles, clethrionomys rutilus and C. gapperi. With distinct biogeographic histories, post-glacial colonization of C. rutilus and C. gapperi into this region would have occurred by different routes. Variation in the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene, the MYH2 nuclear intron, and the post palatal bridge were assessed to examine phylogeographic patterns of these two species, and a proposed contact zone in southeast Alaska. Low, but consistent, levels of sequence divergence of the cytochrome b gene were …
