Landmines In The Sand: The Falkland Islands, Juan Carlos Ruan, Jill Macheme Aug 2001

Landmines In The Sand: The Falkland Islands, Juan Carlos Ruan, Jill Macheme

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

The Falkland Islands contain approximately 117 mine fields. Many of the mines were remotely delivered. About 80 percent of these landmines are hidden beneath sandy beaches and peat, which can shift a mine’s position and make detection and removal very difficult.

A Theoretical Study Of The Interactive Communication Process In Video Game Playing: A Symbolic Interactionist Approach, Nevsal Tiryakioglu Aug 2001

A Theoretical Study Of The Interactive Communication Process In Video Game Playing: A Symbolic Interactionist Approach, Nevsal Tiryakioglu

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Video games have become the most popular leisure activity among children and adolescents. The increasing popularity of video games has urged researchers to determine the effects of video game playing on youngsters. Given the fact that most popular video games are violent in nature, much of the research has primarily focused on the correlation between playing video games with violent content and aggressive behavior in children. Most researchers have relied on previous media violence research, assuming similarities between television viewing and video game playing. However, video games are interactive media allowing the player to participate in the game scenario, which …

Body Length, Activity Level, And Avoidance Learning In Zebrafish Exposed To Nicotine As Embryos, Tim Lawrence Aug 2001

Body Length, Activity Level, And Avoidance Learning In Zebrafish Exposed To Nicotine As Embryos, Tim Lawrence

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Smoking continues to be a significant health problem in the United States and throughout the world. One of the many aspects of the health risks of smoking that have been investigated is the effect of maternal smoking on developing embryos. In particular, exposure of embryos to nicotine is believed to cause attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and related problems in children. Both correlational research with humans and experimental research with animals have supported this belief. However, the mechanisms of the effect of nicotine on developing embryos are not fully understood. The zebrafish offers a useful model of the effects of nicotine on …

Spectral Sensitivity Of The Goldfish Erg And Optic Tectum Before And After Optic Nerve Damage, Jenel Pile Aug 2001

Spectral Sensitivity Of The Goldfish Erg And Optic Tectum Before And After Optic Nerve Damage, Jenel Pile

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

It is well known that visual neurons in lower vertebrates regenerate after damage. Thus, the visual system has served as a useful model for neural regeneration studies. However, most of the research on neural regeneration has focused on the recovery of anatomical connections; little has been done assessing the return of visual function. The purpose of this study was to determine the return of function of the goldfish optic nerve at four time intervals after damage (crush). An increment threshold procedure was used to obtain electroretinogram (ERG) and tectal responses to light onset and termination to various wavelengths of light. …

Dye Tracing To Delineate Drainage Basins And Determine Groundwater Sensitivity, Mammoth Cave, Kentucky; With Special Reference To Potential Groundwater Contamination From Spills Along Interstate I-65, Arthur Capps

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The Mammoth Cave System of south central Kentucky encompasses more than 560 km of surveyed cave passages. The largest groundwater basin (244 km2) found within this cave system emerges from the Turnhole Bend Spring on the Green River. During high flow conditions, water from this groundwater basin will spill over into the Echo River section of the cave. Previous research, including cave mapping and dye tracing (Quinlan and Ray, 1989; Currens and Ray, 1998; Coons, 1994), has delineated the boundaries of spring groundwater basins for numerous springs along the Green and Barren Rivers. These data showed that 60% of the …

Transduction By Phi Bb-1, A Bacteriophage Of Borrelia Burgdorferi, Christian H. Eggers, Betsy J. Kimmel, James L. Bono, Abdallah F. Elias, Patricia Rosa, D. Scott Samuels

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

We previously described a bacteriophage of the Lyme disease agent Borrelia burgdorferi designated phi BB-1. This phage packages the host complement of the 32-kb circular plasmids (cp32s), a group of homologous molecules found throughout the genus Borrelia. To demonstrate the ability of phi BB-1 to package and transduce DNA, a kanamycin resistance cassette was inserted into a cloned fragment of phage DNA, and the resulting construct was transformed into B. burgdorferi CA-11.2A cells. The kan cassette recombined into a resident cp32 and was stably maintained. The cp32 containing the kan cassette was packaged by phi BB-1 released from this B. …

Deforestation And Land Degradation On The Ethiopian Highlands: A Strategy For Physical Recovery, Badege Bishaw Aug 2001

Deforestation And Land Degradation On The Ethiopian Highlands: A Strategy For Physical Recovery, Badege Bishaw

International Conference on African Development Archives

Deforestation, accelerated soil erosion, and land degradation are serious problems in Ethiopia. To overcome these problems, efforts have been made to launch afforestation and conservation programs; however, success to date has been limited. This paper will discuss agriculture and forestry practices on the Ethiopian Highlands and try to identify the causes of deforestation and land degradation there. Agroforestry and social forestry practices, plantation forestry, and conservation of the remaining forests are proposed as a strategy for physical recovery. Social and policy issues, such as participation of the local people in natural resource management and the existence of clear land and …

Deforestation, Wood Famine And Environmental Degradation In Highland Ecosystems Of Ethiopia: Urgent Need For Actions, Demel Teketay Aug 2001

Deforestation, Wood Famine And Environmental Degradation In Highland Ecosystems Of Ethiopia: Urgent Need For Actions, Demel Teketay

International Conference on African Development Archives

One of the major challenges facing Ethiopia in its strive for development is environmental degradation, which is manifested in the form of land and water resources degradation as well as loss of biodiversity. Land degradation, in turn, is expressed in terms of soil erosion and loss of soil fertility. Deforestation/devegetation has been held as one of the major factors contributing to land degradation through exposing the soil for various agents of erosion. Ethiopia, with high-intensity rainstorms and extensive steep slopes, is highly susceptible to soil erosion, especially in the highlands. The organic content of soils is often low due to …

Reflections On Development In Ethiopia, Paul B. Henze Aug 2001

Reflections On Development In Ethiopia, Paul B. Henze

International Conference on African Development Archives

I visited Ethiopia frequently and traveled extensively in all parts of the country during the Derg period. I observed firsthand the deleterious effects of the Derg's attempt to turn the country into a communist "people's republic".1 Since the fall of the Derg in May 1991 I have made eleven visits to Ethiopia (with a twelfth scheduled for June 2001), usually for periods of several weeks, totaling well over a year of travel in the country in all. During these same years I have also spent time in 16 other post-communist countries, ranging from Slovenia and Armenia to Mongolia, observing the …

Colonizing Ideas: A Comparative Look At Receptivity To The Adoption Of Western Education In Japan And Ethiopia, Getachew Felleke Aug 2001

Colonizing Ideas: A Comparative Look At Receptivity To The Adoption Of Western Education In Japan And Ethiopia, Getachew Felleke

International Conference on African Development Archives

This paper examines the challenges and promises that accompanied the introduction of modern education into two non-modern societies. The study is motivated by an interest to fathom some of the causes and sources of Ethiopia’s multifaceted social and economic problems. Taking as its point of departure the view that, over the long run, evolutionary progress of societies should be the norm, the study seeks to identify the impediments that have blocked such a normal pace of progress in Ethiopia. Ethiopia’s early experience in building up its education system is compared and contrasted with that of Japan’s. The roles played by …

The Effects Of Food Aid And Household Composition On Child Farm Labor Supply In Rural Ethiopia, Takashi Yamano Aug 2001

The Effects Of Food Aid And Household Composition On Child Farm Labor Supply In Rural Ethiopia, Takashi Yamano

International Conference on African Development Archives

This paper determines the effects of household demographic composition and food aid on child farm labor supply controlling for household fixed effects. The results indicate that a child has a higher probability of working on farm if he or she is living with younger children, suggesting that older children are reducing resource constraints. The results on food aid indicate that receiving free distribution has relatively larger positive effects on the probability of girls working on farm than boys, while participating in food for work has relatively larger negative effects.

Causes Of Seasonal Food Insecurity In Oromiya Zone Of Amhara Region: Farmers' View, Degefa Tolossa Aug 2001

Causes Of Seasonal Food Insecurity In Oromiya Zone Of Amhara Region: Farmers' View, Degefa Tolossa

International Conference on African Development Archives

Ethiopia is currently facing challenging problems, ranging from those induced by environmental crises to those caused by demographic and socio-economic constraints which adversely affect peoples` production system. The country is generally characterized by extreme poverty, continued and high population growth rate, severe environmental degradation and recurrent drought (Getachew 1995; Markos,1997, NOVIB, 1999). Resulting from these, the performance of agriculture, the sector that makes livelihood for 85% of the country’s population, has been poor over the last few decades, to the extent that the country could not adequately feed its population from domestic production. This has been manifested in the prevailing …

Emerging Informal Land Markets: A Quest For Equitable And Efficient Land Tenure Systems, Tesfaye Teklu Aug 2001

Emerging Informal Land Markets: A Quest For Equitable And Efficient Land Tenure Systems, Tesfaye Teklu

International Conference on African Development Archives

This paper is motivated by the need for an informed analytical discussion on land issues and policy options. “There is a danger that if a process of learning and policy dialogue on land tenure issues is not started soon, Ethiopia, like a number of other African countries, will adopt ‘ready made’ land tenure reforms that are based on ideological considerations and misconceptions about current problems” (Bruce, Hoben and Rahmato, 1994). This paper shares this view (or, warning) and follows it as a guiding principle.

Simulating Strategy Options For Enhancing Hyv-Maize Technology Adoption In Oromia, Ethiopia, Bedassa Tadesse Aug 2001

Simulating Strategy Options For Enhancing Hyv-Maize Technology Adoption In Oromia, Ethiopia, Bedassa Tadesse

International Conference on African Development Archives

Using a sample selection induced bivariate probit model fitted to data collected from small scale, resource poor farmers in Western Oromia (Jimma, Ilu-Ababaor, Estern and Western Welega zones), I define and simulate different strategy (Pure and Mixed) scenarios. The scenarios provide the extent to which the adoption of maize technology package (HYV-seeds, fertilizers and planting methods) among currently non-adopter maize growers could be increased with the use of different strategies. Among the scenarios evaluated, I find a strategy that emphasizes information approach, as a pure strategy, or when integrated with education and/or the agent approaches-in a mixed strategy, significantly influential …

Supply Response Of Ethiopian Farmers To Price And Non-Price Factors, Abrar Suleiman Aug 2001

Supply Response Of Ethiopian Farmers To Price And Non-Price Factors, Abrar Suleiman

International Conference on African Development Archives

The main purpose of this study is to examine the responsiveness of peasant farmers to changes in price and non-price factors. To this end, quadratic production and restricted profit functions are fitted to farm-level survey data from Ethiopia. The results indicate that farmers respond significantly to price incentives, but the effect of prices on output supply and fertilizer demand is negligible. The most important finding is that non-price factors are far more important in affecting production and resource use than price incentives. The results underscore the need to strengthen market incentives through effective policies that will improve farmers’ access to …

Interview With An Amateur Deminer, Nicaragua 2001, Russell Gasser Aug 2001

Interview With An Amateur Deminer, Nicaragua 2001, Russell Gasser

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

After losing a bull and a pig to landmines in his fields, a Nicaraguan campesino undertakes the arduous task of meticulously removing 500 AP mines from his farm. The Nicaraguan Army discourages amateur demining because of the danger, but many who depend on the land for survival resort to mine clearance to make their plots safe and usable.

Discrimination Of Computer-Graphic Stimuli By Mice: A Method For The Behavioral Characterization Of Transgenic And Gene-Knockout Models., T J Bussey, L M Saksida, L A Rothblat

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

An automated method is described for the behavioral testing of mice in an apparatus that allows computer-graphic stimulus material to be presented. Mice responded to these stimuli by making a nose-poke toward a computer monitor that was equipped with a touchscreen attachment for detecting responses. It was found that C57BL/6 mice were able to solve single-pair visual discriminations as well as 3-pair concurrent visual discriminations. The finding that mice are capable of complex visual discriminations introduces the possibility of testing mice on nonspatial tasks that are similar to those used with rats, monkeys, and humans. Furthermore, the method seems particularly …

Preserving The Womb Of The Unknown Species With Hotspots Legislation, John Charles Kunich Aug 2001

Preserving The Womb Of The Unknown Species With Hotspots Legislation, John Charles Kunich

UC Law Journal

The concept of "hotspots" is a cutting-edge biodiversity topic that has never received scholarly legal analysis until now. Recent credible scientific research indicates that most of the species on earth are concentrated within only a few ecosystems called hotspots. However, the current global extinction crisis, raging without any effective legal control, threatens these hotspots and the species they harbor. It is a matter of the highest importance to preserve the hotspots in the face of increasing threats from development, pollution, and other pressures.

This Article begins by tracing the history and science of extinction, including evidence as to the magnitude …
