Successful Actions For Avian Hazard Control In Brazil, Luiz Cláudio Magalhães Bastos (Maj.)
Successful Actions For Avian Hazard Control In Brazil, Luiz Cláudio Magalhães Bastos (Maj.)
Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 3rd (2001)
Brazil built one of the world’s largest aeronautical infrastructure. The airport net is distributed along its vast territory, which shows a tremendous ecosystem variety. Having a large civilian aircraft fleet and also running second after Venezuela in catalogued bird species, Brazil has had problems related to bird strikes. Although Brazil has little problem with migratory birds, the threat posed by residents birds in some airports represents a risk to be managed. On the other hand, due to human population growth and poor policies of garbage disposal in the past, nowadays some big airports have in their vicinities open dumps that …

A Review Of Deer Control Devices Intended For Use On Airports, Thomas W. Seamans
Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 3rd (2001)
Deer living on airport habitats pose a direct threat to aircraft operations and to public safety. From 1990– 2000, about 520 collisions between civil aircraft and deer were reported in the USA with damage occurring in 86% of the collisions. Removal of individual deer by lethal or non-lethal means can reduce the potential for deer-aircraft collisions; however, such action is often controversial. Various items are marketed to keep deer away from airports, crops or residential areas. Some items have been tested while others have unsubstantiated claims of efficacy. This paper reviews the use of various fence designs, propane cannons, cattle …
A Revolution In Wildlife Management, Greg Winfield
A Revolution In Wildlife Management, Greg Winfield
Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 3rd (2001)
At past Bird Strike Conferences, the need for having a good database to track and analyze wildlife activities has been expressed. Sadly, most airports/wildlife contractors still depend on archaic log sheets. At best, some have tapped into the limited capability of spreadsheets. Limiting yourself to this method severely restricts your abilities to track activities effectively. And if the data isn’t available then you cannot make informed decisions. Toronto’s Pearson International Airport’s Field Superintendent John Meehan put it best by saying… “I cannot imagine any airport trying to oversee wildlife initiatives without an effective data analysis tool…it would be meaningless…”. If …

Fogging Of Rejex-It® Tp-40. Effectiveness As A Function Of Droplet Size To Repel Birds, Peter F. Vogt
Fogging Of Rejex-It® Tp-40. Effectiveness As A Function Of Droplet Size To Repel Birds, Peter F. Vogt
Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 3rd (2001)
Fogging of Rejex-it® TP-40 (Fog Force) offers a very efficient method for the management of nuisance birds in many diverse areas without any adverse effects to non-target animals. Despite its effectiveness, there are many factors that influence the effectiveness and desired results. The product alone does not guarantee the desired success. It is not always the quantity that determines fast reaction, but more the form for the specific application. Smaller droplets in the 10-micron range are theoretically 27 times more effective than 30 micron droplets and five micron droplets even 216 times more effective for the same quantity of product …

Genetic Evidence For Two Species Of Elephant In Africa, Alfred L. Roca, Nicholas Georgiadis, Jill Pecon-Slattery, Stephen J. O'Brien
Biology Faculty Articles
Elephants from the tropical forests of Africa are morphologically distinct from savannah or bush elephants. Dart-biopsy samples from 195 free-ranging African elephants in 21 populations were examined for DNA sequence variation in four nuclear genes (1732 base pairs). Phylogenetic distinctions between African forest elephant and savannah elephant populations corresponded to 58% of the difference in the same genes between elephant genera Loxodonta (African) and Elephas (Asian). Large genetic distance, multiple genetically fixed nucleotide site differences, morphological and habitat distinctions, and extremely limited hybridization of gene flow between forest and savannah elephants support the recognition and conservation management of two African …

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances
Next week our campus will be alive with students. Students who have studied with us before, and are returning. Students who are with us for the first time. Students from smalls and from cities; students who know what they want to do, and students who don’t; students seeking skills to start careers and to build their lives. Some of them will come looking for mentors; some will find mentors they didn’t even know they sought.

Portrayal Vs. Reality: Images Of African Americans In Magazine Advertisements, Catherine Elizabeth Davis
Portrayal Vs. Reality: Images Of African Americans In Magazine Advertisements, Catherine Elizabeth Davis
Communication
The images of African Americans in magazine advertisements are changing. As these images change, researchers question whether or not African American socioeconomic and familial status are being accurately represented. George Gerbner's cultivation theory suggests that media play a role in shaping people's perceptions of minority groups. Using content analysis, this study compares the portrayal of African American socioeconomic and familial status in magazine advertisements with 1999 United States Census Bureau socioeconomic statistics of African Americans in the United States. This study found that a discrepancy exists between the portrayal and the reality of African American socioeconomic and familial status than …
Neuroprotection In The Hibernating Brain: Tissue Trauma And Glutamate Studied By Microdialysis, Fang Zhou
Neuroprotection In The Hibernating Brain: Tissue Trauma And Glutamate Studied By Microdialysis, Fang Zhou
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Hibernation, a natural model of tolerance to 'cerebral ischemia', represents a state of pronounced fluctuation in cerebral blood flow where no brain damage occurs. This study systematically investigates the brain tissue response of hibernating and euthermic arctic ground squirrels to CNS trauma, modeled by insertion of microdialysis probes. The effect of glutamate, an excitatory amino acid neurotransmitter, on the cellular response and the origin of the significant amount of gltuamate were determined by quantitative microdialysis study. The present results indicate in euthermic brain tissue a typical inflammatory tissue response evidenced by the presence of activated microglia and astrocytes and the …

Assessment Of Total Mercury And Methyl Mercury In Selected Subsistence Fish In Western Alaska, Xiaoming Zhang
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were examined in muscle and liver samples of salmon species (Chinook: Oncorhynchus tshawytscha; Chum: O. keta; Sockeye: O. nerka; Coho: O. kisutch) and freshwater fish species (Pike: Esox lucius; Grayling: Thymallus arcticus; Whitefish: Caregonus nelsoni) collected in 1999 and 2000 from the Western Alaska rivers (Yukon, Kuskokwim, Nushagak and Kvichak). The THg in salmon muscles has a mean value of 62 ng/g (ww). In Pike muscles, THg has a mean value of 879 ng/g. The mean concentrations of THg in Grayling and Whitefish muscle are 153 ng/g and 32 ng/g respectively. In salmon muscle …
The Effects Of Windchill Exposure On The Snow Crab, Chionoecetes Opilio, Jonathan J. Warrenchuk
The Effects Of Windchill Exposure On The Snow Crab, Chionoecetes Opilio, Jonathan J. Warrenchuk
Fisheries
Millions of snow crabs, 'Chionoecetes opilio, ' are aerially exposed during sorting in the annual Bering Sea commercial fishery. A laboratory experiment measured snow crab responses to windchill exposure. Crabs were exposed to 8 to 16 m/s windspeed and air temperatures from -2 to -10 C̊ for 5 minutes. Mortality, autonomy, and righting response were assessed for seven days post-treatment. Crabs experienced 40% to 100% mortality at windchill from -10 to 16 C̊. Reduced exposure time significantly reduced mortality. Autonomy was variable but pronounced below -10 C̊ windchill. The righting response was impaired after all but the least severe treatment. …
