Women's Employment In Bangladesh Agriculture: Composition, Determinants And Scope, S Rahman Oct 2000

Women's Employment In Bangladesh Agriculture: Composition, Determinants And Scope, S Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Gender composition of labour use and factors determining demand and supply of female labour in crop production is examined using survey data from 14 villages in two agro-ecological regions of Bangladesh. The share of women in labour use ranges between 11-18% in foodgrain (rice and wheat) and 14-48% in non-cereal (highest for vegetables) production. Incidence of female labour hire is very low and varies directly with land size classes while supply from family varies inversely. Cultivation of diverse crops (local and modern varieties of rice, jute, oilseeds and vegetables), education as well as women's ownership of land increases demand for …

Kant On Recognizing Our Duties Asgod's Commands, John E. Hare Oct 2000

Kant On Recognizing Our Duties Asgod's Commands, John E. Hare

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Kant both says that we should recognize our duties as God's commands, and objects to the theological version of heteronomy, 'which derives morality from a divine and supremely perfect will'. In this paper I discuss how these two views fit together, and in the process I develop a notion of autonomous submission to divine moral authority. I oppose the 'constitutive' view of autonomy proposed by J. B. Schneewind and Christine Korsgaard. I locate Kant's objection to theological heteronomy against the background of Crusius's divine command theory, and I compare Kant's views about divine authority and human political authority.

Euthanasia And Assisted Suicide In The Post-Rodriguez Era: Lessons From Foreign Jurisdictions, Michael Cormack Oct 2000

Euthanasia And Assisted Suicide In The Post-Rodriguez Era: Lessons From Foreign Jurisdictions, Michael Cormack

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Euthanasia and assisted suicide are highly controversial subjects that have drawn much attention in Canada over the last two decades. This paper outlines how the Netherlands, the United States, Australia, and Canada have approached the practices. Jurisprudence, public opinion polls, legislative developments, and the positions of medical organizations and their members are included in the analysis. A number of arguments for and against the continued prohibition of the practices in Canada are evaluated. As well, information regarding the extent to which euthanasia and assisted suicide are performed in these countries is assessed. It will be shown that Canadians currently enjoy …

Magnolia And The Signs Of The Times: A Theological Reflection, Mario Degiglio-Bellemare Oct 2000

Magnolia And The Signs Of The Times: A Theological Reflection, Mario Degiglio-Bellemare

Journal of Religion & Film

This piece attempts to articulate a theological reading of the film Magnolia, directed by P.T. Anderson. The author endeavours to locate God within the matrix of human relationality in the film. The God depicted in Magnolia, argues the author, is the God of liberation, the God who took the Israelites out of Egyptian slavery. This God of Exodus gives signs of imminent freedom to people living within systems of captivity which crush dreams and deny the flourishing of hope. Magnolia depicts the lives of people tossed aside by the television industry in Los Angeles. God's signs, however, remind …

Examining The Relationship Between The Therapeutic Bond And The Phases Of Treatment Outcome, Stephen M. Saunders Oct 2000

Examining The Relationship Between The Therapeutic Bond And The Phases Of Treatment Outcome, Stephen M. Saunders

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Examined the association between the therapeutic bond—an element of the therapeutic alliance—and treatment effectiveness. 114 psychotherapy clients completed self-report questionnaires at intake and throughout open-ended, psychodynamically oriented psychotherapy. Three bond scales, role investment (RI), empathic resonance (ER), and mutual affirmation (MA), were contrasted to session quality and the three phases of outcome (remoralization, remediation, and rehabilitation). Results indicated that different aspects of the bond predicted session quality and treatment outcome. Clients who felt motivated and invested in therapy (relatively high RI) and who reported that the therapeutic environment was friendly and affirmative (relatively high MA) were likely to rate the …

Side Collision Warning System For Transit Buses, Sue Mcneil, David Duggins, Christoph Mertz, Arne Suppe, Chuck Thorpe Oct 2000

Side Collision Warning System For Transit Buses, Sue Mcneil, David Duggins, Christoph Mertz, Arne Suppe, Chuck Thorpe

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Transit buses are involved in many more accidents than other vehicles. Collision warning systems (CWS) are therefore placed most efficiently on these buses. In our project, we investigate their operating environment and available technologies to develop performance specifications for such CWS. The paper discusses our findings of transit buses driving through very cluttered surroundings and being involved in many different types of accidents where currently available CWS no not work effectively. One of the focuses of our work is pedestrians around the bus and their detection.

In this issue, the Osgoode Hall Law Journal presents a special symposium of review-essays on Allan Hutchinson's book, It's All in the Game: A Non-foundationalist Account of Law and Adjudication. A member of the faculty of Osgoode Hall Law School since 1978, Professor Hutchinson is well known internationally for his rich and provocative contributions to the literature of Critical Legal Studies. In numerous books, articles, and essays, he has challenged us to think harder about a wide span of issues in tort, constitutional law, jurisprudence, professional responsibility, judicial independence, law and post-modernism, and other fields. The review-essays that follow are written …

Latino Agenda 2000, Leslie Bowen, Lillian Hirales, Mary Jo Marion, Giovanna Negretti, Andrés Torres Oct 2000

Latino Agenda 2000, Leslie Bowen, Lillian Hirales, Mary Jo Marion, Giovanna Negretti, Andrés Torres

Gastón Institute Publications

Few would argue that our community's position is precarious. On the one hand, we are a growing presence in the Commonwealth. In 1995, there were an estimated 344,068 Latinos living in Massachusetts, representing 5.6% of the total state population, a 20% increase since 1990. It is expected that the 2000 census will confirm that Latinos are indeed the largest minority group in the state. Latinos make up an even larger proportion of the total population of a number of key cities, including Lawrence (48%), Chelsea (39%), Holyoke (37%), Springfield (20%), and Boston (12%). Latino youth have formed the largest minority …

Studies Related To The Design And Implementation Of A Magnetic Suspension And Balance System, Syed Adeel Akhtar Jafri Oct 2000

Studies Related To The Design And Implementation Of A Magnetic Suspension And Balance System, Syed Adeel Akhtar Jafri

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents studies related to the magnetic suspension and balance system (MSBS) of the Princeton/ONR High Reynolds Number Testing Facility (HRTF). The main motivation for developing the MSBS is to provide interference free aero/hydrodynamic testing of submersible models, which will lead to more accurate measurements. From the controls point of view, the main specification of the MSBS is to robustly control the position of a submersible model in five degrees of freedom (DOF), including three translational as well as pitching and yawing positions. The MSBS should not only regulate the submersible model's position but should also allow for small …

False Cape, Katherine Jackson Oct 2000

False Cape, Katherine Jackson

English Theses & Dissertations

Set at False Cape on the coast of Virginia in the year 1912, this story is about a shipwreck, but it is also a story about choices--between love and honor and betrayal--that face a woman and two men who serve in the U.S. Life-saving Service: Rachel Grey, a widow from Princess Anne County who marries and moves to the desolate beach at False Cape; Robert Grey, keeper of the False Cape Station; and Michael Midgett, a surfman under Grey's command. When the three-masted Italian schooner Francesca da Rimini fetches up on the shoals of False Cape, the relationships of the …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Silicon Field Emitter Arrays, Aaron M. Brock Oct 2000

Fabrication And Characterization Of Silicon Field Emitter Arrays, Aaron M. Brock

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Field emission is a process through which the application of a large electric field to the surface of a material causes electron emission into vacuum. The electron emission current is a strong function of the geometry of the emitting material. The focus of this thesis is to investigate the effect of geometry on the emission current. Specifically, silicon field emitter arrays were fabricated using two separate fabrication processes termed the standard process and the new process. The uniformity of the arrays was measured experimentally. The arrays were used in field emission tests from which parameters controlling field emission were extracted. …

Three Inches Of Night, Rebecca Eldridge Hurst Oct 2000

Three Inches Of Night, Rebecca Eldridge Hurst

English Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to examine through the medium of short story moments of the unsaid, and how those moments keep us from true, pure communication with ourselves and with one another. Moments of the unsaid are those that make up the hours that make up the days of our lives„ those in which experience cannot be conveyed through language, those, in fact, in which using language to convey experience lessens such. And it is in these moments of the unsaid—where language (written, spoken, or thought) cannot capture truths, cannot link body to body, heart to heart, soul …

A Study For An Optimal Delivery Sequence Of A Bowling Pinspotter Distributor Mechanism, David Michael Burt Oct 2000

A Study For An Optimal Delivery Sequence Of A Bowling Pinspotter Distributor Mechanism, David Michael Burt

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The two major competitors in bowling sports equipment are Brunswick, Inc., and AMF Bowling Co. The latest version of a piece of bowling equipment machinery is called a Pinspotter, the design of which has been in existence since the 1950's. With the exception of electronic scoring systems, much of the original design is still being implemented in this model. It is the desire to eliminate undesirable traits in the original Pinspotter model design. Commercial Bowling observations have detected flaws found in a piece of machinery known as the Distributor. The flaws attributed to the Distributor are believed to be sources …

Biological And Physical Observations On Larval Spot (Leiostomus Xanthurus) Recruiting To Oregon And Ocracoke Inlets North Carolina, Thomas R. Wasaff Oct 2000

Biological And Physical Observations On Larval Spot (Leiostomus Xanthurus) Recruiting To Oregon And Ocracoke Inlets North Carolina, Thomas R. Wasaff

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Patterns of abundance, length, age, and growth of larval spot (Leiostomus xanthurus) were compared to assess the variability between spot larvae ingressing to two North Carolina inlets. The source of variability for the recruitment of larval fishes to estuarine nurseries has been linked to environmental stochasticity. Wind data and seasurface temperature satellite images were analyzed as two influential environmental variables that may help explain recruitment variability. As part of the South Atlantic Bight Recruitment Experiment (SABRE), spot larvae were collected between October 1994 and April 1995 as they recruited to Pamlico Sound through Oregon Inlet, located north of Cape Hatteras, …
