False Starts, Evelyn Jill Coley Oct 2000

False Starts, Evelyn Jill Coley

English Theses & Dissertations

False Starts depicts a variety of characters—a single mother, a dishwasher, a philosophy student—who discover the mendacious nature of their world views and concepts of self. The worlds they inhabit are not as sensible as they supposed. Some quietly acquiesce to the chaos, like the single mother in "Still Tank," who gently continues in her role despite the death of her pet jellyfish. Some fight this revelation like Lea in "Another Love Story." Lea assaults her ex-boyfriend, a dishwasher who broke up with her for no fathomable reason. In "Fly Trap," the anchor of False Starts, Allison, a college …

Fourier Transform Raman Spectroscopy For Process Control In The Petroleum Industry, Kent Lawson Wise Oct 2000

Fourier Transform Raman Spectroscopy For Process Control In The Petroleum Industry, Kent Lawson Wise

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

As early as 1950, Raman spectroscopy was proposed as a method to determine aromatics and olefins in hydrocarbon mixtures. Until recently, extensive use of Raman spectroscopy in the characterization of hydrocarbons has not been practical due to several limitations. One early limitation to Raman analysis was the absence of a high intensity and stable excitation source. This problem has been overcome with the advent of lasers. Another limitation was the presence of fluorescence in hydrocarbon fuels when excited by visible lasers. However, the development of Fourier-transform Raman spectrometers now allows Raman spectra to be collected using near-IR lasers (e.g …

Determination Of Anisotropy Of Granular Materials And Its Relation To Liquefaction Resistance Under Cyclic Loading, Omer Faruk Capar Oct 2000

Determination Of Anisotropy Of Granular Materials And Its Relation To Liquefaction Resistance Under Cyclic Loading, Omer Faruk Capar

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Granular materials such as sand deposits have anisotropic characteristics due to the gravitational forces during depositional process and various stress histories. These anisotropic characteristics make evaluation of liquefaction resistance of soil very complex. Since obtaining undisturbed soil specimens for laboratory tests from discrete elements like sandy soils is very laborious, the soil specimens are reconstituted in laboratory with regards to the in-situ density of soil. Reconstituting the soil changes the soil fabric or anisotropic characteristics in comparison with field conditions. Many researchers have pointed out that liquefaction resistance is highly influenced by differences in the structure of the soil (or …

Copper Complexation And Speciation In The Western South And Equatorial Atlantic Ocean, John A. Consolvo

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Presented here are the first data on copper complexation and speciation in the South Atlantic Ocean. Samples were collected at six vertical profile stations and along the surface (1m) transect during the 1996 IOC Baseline Contaminant Survey. Copper complexation measurements were made for the surface transect (1m) samples and three of the six vertical profile stations (1m - ~500m) using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) with a thin mercury film, rotating glassy carbon disk electrode (TMFRGCDE).

A strong organic copper complexing ligand (L1; log K' cuL1/cu2+ > 11. 8 ± 0 .4) was detected in 57% of all …

Induction Of Apoptosis In Human Prostate Cancer Cells By Resveratrol, Gary Zulfikar Morris Oct 2000

Induction Of Apoptosis In Human Prostate Cancer Cells By Resveratrol, Gary Zulfikar Morris

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Recently attention has been brought to trans-resveratrol's {TR) anticancer activity, as determined through a number of cultured cancer cell models. This activity was attributed to TR behaving as an estrogen, and the orientation of TR' s hydroxyl groups. Based on this work it was of interest to determine whether TR would also be toxic in prostate cancer cells; if toxic, did TR induce necrosis or apoptosis in the cells; was it toxic through hormone mediated pathways; and were TR's hydroxyl groups responsible for its biological activity. To this end, cellular viability was assessed in two different prostate cancer cell …

The purpose of this study was to determine if age, race, and gender were related to victim satisfaction during mediation while controlling for the type of offense. Satisfaction with the mediator's attitude, the session itself, the mediator, and the outcome were assessed to measure the victim's level of satisfaction with the various components of the mediation process. Data was collected from questionnaires mailed to crime victims' who had completed the mediation process through the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court in Norfolk, Virginia. This thesis looks at the relationship of age, race, and gender to victim satisfaction with mediation. Cross-tabulations were …

Reinventing Structural Reform Litigation: Deputizing Private Citizens In The Enforcement Of Civil Rights, Myriam E. Gilles Oct 2000

Reinventing Structural Reform Litigation: Deputizing Private Citizens In The Enforcement Of Civil Rights, Myriam E. Gilles

Articles

The aim of this Article is to explore the possibility of constructing a model that harnesses the power of private citizens to reform unconstitutional practices, particularly in the critical area of police-related rights violations. I seek here to reintegrate private citizens into the enforcement of public laws; to tap the private experiential and financial resources that were a necessary condition of the great structural reform efforts of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s.

The vehicle by which I propose to accomplish these ends is a simple, yet novel, amendment to 42 U.S.C. § 14141, the statute which …

The Political Economy Of Global Multilateralism, John O. Mcginnis Oct 2000

The Political Economy Of Global Multilateralism, John O. Mcginnis

Articles

Many conservatives (at the least the subset who are classical liberals) approve of global multilateral trade agreements and allied agreements that keep global capital markets open. Conservatives, however, tend to be openly skeptical of other global multilateral agreements, be they environmental accords, human rights conventions, military pacts, or an agreement on an international criminal court. In this paper I offer the beginnings of a framework of sound political economy that justifies these divergent intuitions and shows that they are rooted in more than just a reflexive liking for trade combined with a disdain for the environment, human rights, criminal justice, …

Race And The Australian Constitution: From Federation To Reconciliation, George Williams Oct 2000

Race And The Australian Constitution: From Federation To Reconciliation, George Williams

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The framing of the Australian Constitution initiated a pattern of discrimination against Australia's Indigenous peoples. They were cast as outsiders to the nation brought about in 1901. This pattern was broken in 1967 by the deletion of the discriminatory provisions from the Constitution. Today, there is strong community support in Australia for the reconciliation process, which would involve recognition of Indigenous peoples as an integral and unique component of the Australian nation. However, this has yet to be translated into substantive legal outcomes. The author analyses the interaction of issues of race and the Australian Constitution as it has affected …

Ionization Of Hydrogen Atoms By Fast Electrons, Sindu P. Jones, Don H. Madison Oct 2000

Ionization Of Hydrogen Atoms By Fast Electrons, Sindu P. Jones, Don H. Madison

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study ionization of atomic hydrogen by fast electrons using asymptotically correct two-center wave functions to describe the scattering system both initially and finally. For the final state, we employ the well-known product wave function of Redmond, which treats all three two-body Coulomb interactions exactly, albeit independently. This "3C" wave function is the leading term of the exact scattering wave function, regardless of how slow the three particles are, if any two particles have large relative separation [Y.E. Kim and A.L. Zubarev, Phys. Rev. A 56, 521 (1997)]. Here we extend the analysis of Qiu et al. [Phys. Rev. A …

Laboratories Teaching Concepts In Microcontrollers And Hardware-Software Co-Design, Daryl G. Beetner, Hardy J. Pottinger, Kyle Mitchell

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Hardware software co-design is becoming increasingly important to the embedded systems industry. It will soon be fundamental to digital systems design. As such, students in electrical and computer engineering and in computer science should be introduced to hardware-software co-design early in their undergraduate education.

We are designing laboratory modules which introduce concepts of hardware-software co-design in an undergraduate's first course on microcontrollers and digital systems design. Students use design automation tools to develop FPGA-based hardware for use with an 8051-microcontroller and use common software development tools to develop microcontroller software in C or assembly language. Co-simulation of hardware and software …

Dc Power Bus Design With Fdtd Modeling Including A Dispersive Media, Xiaoning Ye, Jun Fan, Marina Koledintseva, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

DC power-bus modeling in high-speed digital design using the FDTD method is reported here. The dispersive medium is approximated by a Debye model to account for the loss. A wide band frequency response (100 MHz-5 GHz) is obtained through a single FDTD simulation. Favorable agreement is achieved between the modeled and measured results for a typical DC power-bus structure with multiple SMT decoupling capacitors mounted on the board. The FDTD tool is then applied to investigate the effects of local decoupling on a DC power-bus. The modeled results agree with the results from another modeling tool, the CEMPIE (a circuit …

Generations Apart: Xers And Boomers In The Officer Corps, Leonard Wong Dr. Oct 2000

Generations Apart: Xers And Boomers In The Officer Corps, Leonard Wong Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The author addresses the junior officer attrition problem by identifying and discussing the disparity between senior and junior officers in terms of generational differences. Officers from the Baby Boom Generation think and perceive things differently than officers from Generation X. Using empirical evidence to support the generational differences literature, the author points out that Generation X officers are more confident in their abilities, perceive loyalty differently, want more balance between work and family, and are not intimidated by rank. Additionally, while pay is important to Generation X officers, it alone will not keep junior officers from leaving. The solutions presented …
