Resummation Of Nonalternating Divergent Perturbative Expansions, Ulrich D. Jentschura Oct 2000

Resummation Of Nonalternating Divergent Perturbative Expansions, Ulrich D. Jentschura

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A method for the resummation of a nonalternating divergent perturbation series is described. The procedure constitutes a generalization of the Borel-Padã method. Of crucial importance is a special integration contour in the complex plane. Nonperturbative imaginary contributions can be inferred from the purely real perturbative coefficients. A connection is drawn from the quantum field theoretic problem of resummation to divergent perturbative expansions in other areas of physics.

Cost-Benefit Default Principles, Cass R. Sunstein Oct 2000

Cost-Benefit Default Principles, Cass R. Sunstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

In an important but thus far unnoticed development, federal courts have created a new series of "default principles" for statutory interpretation, authorizing regulatory agencies, when statutes are unclear, (a) to exempt trivial risks from regulation and thus to develop a kind of common law of "acceptable risks," (b) to take account of substitute risks created by regulation, and thus to engage in "health-health" tradeoffs, (c) to consider whether compliance with regulation is feasible, (d) to take costs into account, and (e) to engage in cost-benefit balancing, and thus to develop a kind of common law of cost-benefit analysis. These cost-benefit …

Rethinking Media And Movements, Chad Raphael Oct 2000

Rethinking Media And Movements, Chad Raphael

Communication

Todd Gitlin’s work helped us to understand the tremendous barriers to left movements speaking freely through commercial media and the potentially destructive impacts of media imperatives on movements. Edward Morgan adds another warning: today’s organizers must overcome a media history of the 1960s that demonizes or trivializes the era’s struggles for justice. But must we also overcome some of our own thinking about how movements create change and their relationship to the media? Certainly, coverage of anti-Vietnam War organizing is one case study worth revisiting to recover an accurate past that can inform contemporary mobilizations. But there is also a …

Language Ideologies, Choices, And Practices In Eastern African Hip Hop, Alex Perullo, John Fenn Oct 2000

Language Ideologies, Choices, And Practices In Eastern African Hip Hop, Alex Perullo, John Fenn

English and Cultural Studies Journal Articles

Hip hop emerged as a musical and cultural force during the late 1970s in the United States and has followed a global trajectory ever since. Artists and fans around the world filter North American hip hop styles through their own local musical, social, and linguistic environments, making hip hop a highly visible (and audible) example of the intersection of global and local youth cultures. Young people in Tanzania and Malawi, neighboring African countries in the eastern region of the continent, are no exception to this creative process. Both countries have vibrant hip hop communities that draw on youth knowledge of …

Newel And Lydia Bailey Knight's Kirtland Love Story And Historic Wedding, William G. Hartley Oct 2000

Newel And Lydia Bailey Knight's Kirtland Love Story And Historic Wedding, William G. Hartley

BYU Studies

In October 1835, Newel Knight and Lydia Bailey, two spouseless adults still in the prime of life, found themselves living in the same boardinghouse and eating at the same dining table. As lodgers with Hyrum and Jerusha Smith in Kirtland, Ohio, they had good reason to notice each other. Lydia's husband had deserted her more than three years earlier, and Newel's wife had died, a year before. Romance developed quickly, and in a couple of months, Lydia accepted Newel's marriage proposal. Their pending wedding led Joseph Smith, who had personally converted both Lydia and newel, to declare his right to …

Focus, Larry Burke (Editor) Oct 2000

Focus, Larry Burke (Editor)

FOCUS on Boise State

In a country dominated by a two-party political system, Idaho's overwhelming Republican majority is just one more example of the state's rogue image. But residents – politicians and common folk alike - refuse to be defined by political affiliation alone. Examples of individual thought prevail in both parties. This issue of FOCUS examines how we got the way we are and how the state's political stance affects policy issues. Cover illustration by 2000 graduate Andy Stauffer.
