‘A Light To Jacob’ And Other Interesting Finds In 4qmiscellaneous, Dana M. Pike, Andrew C. Skinner

One purpose of our paper is to present a final pre-publication report on our efforts to publish the approximately 2900 fragments from Qumran Cave 4 that comprise our allotment, designated "4QMiscellaneous and Unidentified." These fragments are found on 40 PAM plates, 43.660-43.686, and 43.688-43.701. We have examined all of the plates in the Rockefeller Museum that contain our fragments, have compared them with the PAM photographic plates received from the Israel Antiquities Authority, and are now working to finish preparing our transcriptions of and notes on these fragments. We will submit our work for publication in DJD XXXIII in 1999.

Botulinum Toxin For Essential Tremor Of The Voice With Multiple Anatomical Sites Of Tremor: A Crossover Design Study Of Unilateral Versus Bilateral Injection, Christopher Dromey, Paul Warrick, Jonathan C. Irish, Lisa Durkin, Anthony Parkiam, Anthony Lang

Objectives/Hypothesis: To evaluate the relative efficacy of unilateral and bilateral injections of botulinum toxin injection (BOTOX) in the treatment of essential tremor of the voice (ETV). Study Design: Prospective open-label crossover study. Methods: Patients referred to the Neurolaryngology Clinic at Toronto General Hospital with a diagnosis of ETV were eligible for the study. Patients were sequentially as-signed to receive BOTOX as either a bilateral 2.5-U or a unilateral 15-U electromyography-guided injection, followed by the alternative injection 16 to 18 weeks later. Acoustic, aerodynamic, and nasopharyngoscopic data were collected approximately 2, 6, 10, and16 weeks after each injection. Patients were asked …

The Roles Of Motivation And Ability In Controlling The Consequences Of Stereotype Suppression, Na Wyer, Jw Sherman, Sj Stroessner

Two experiments investigated the conditions under which previously suppressed stereotypes are applied in impression formation. In Experiment 1, the extent to which a previously suppressed racial stereotype influenced subsequent impressions depended on the race of the target who was subsequently encountered. Whereas impressions of race-unspecified targets were assimilated to the stereotype following its suppression, no such effects were observed when the target belonged to the racial group whose stereotype had been initially suppressed. These results demonstrate that when perceivers are motivated to avoid stereotyping individuals, the influence of a stereotype that has been previously activated through suppression is minimized. Estimating Tessellation Parameter Intervals For Rational Curves And Surfaces, Thomas W. Sederberg, Jianmin Zheng

This paper presents a method for determining a priori a constant parameter interval with which a rational curve or surface can be tessellated such that the deviation of the curve or surface from its piecewise linear approximation is within a specified tolerance. The parameter interval is estimated based on information about the second order derivatives in the homogeneous coordinates, instead of using affine coordinates directly. This new step size can be found with roughly the same amount of computation as the step size presented in [Cheng 1992], though it can be proven to always be larger than Cheng's step size. …

On 11 September 1887, the front page of the Norfolk Virginian had a bold headline, "Four Hundred Mormons," along with the following information: "The Old Dominion steamer Richmond, which arrived from New York yesterday, had on board four-hundred and twenty Mormon immigrants from the British Isles who had arrived in New York on Thursday on the steamship Wisconsin. The many and diverse interpretations of the word control make it clear that control constitutes a fundamental concern in most areas of psychology. In an illustration of this diversity, I described my interest in controlled uses of memory at a social gathering; my new acquaintances, without realizing the non sequitur, subsequently raised issues about self control and loss of control-issues much more relevant to their own interests in psychological phenomena than are my narrow musings. This paper begins my personal journey toward developing a transformation model specifically geared to my approach to Christian pastoral counselling. The model seeks to integrate Scriptures with schools of psychotherapy without compromising either. The model explores my belief as a Christian that God sustains humankind; God plays an important role in health and, by extension, in Christian counselling. The idea for this paper came from my counselling practicum in a pastoral counselling centre where Scriptures were not used in the counselling program. As a way of abstract, this paper presents a study of the last meal performed by Jesus with his disciples before his death and its commandment. With a systematic approach and a descriptive style, it explores the theological and ethical positions given by four Christian traditions: namely, Orthodox, Roman Catholic. Anabaptist, and Lutheran, to Jesus’ commandment: “Do [you] this in remembrance of me." The diagnosis of Asperger's Disorder (AsD) is a relatively recent possibility. Although first described in 1944, AsD was not recognized until its inclusion in the Fourth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in 1994. Due to the newness of the disorder and because of a lack of a consensual definition, there is considerable confusion among researchers in this field. For those children with characteristics of AsD, the confusion has resulted in misdiagnosis and, more importantly, inappropriate interventions. In order to better understand the realities of principal succession (an interactive sequencing process for changing school administrators) it was the purpose of this study to examine the relationship between four organizational frames (structural, human resource, political, and symbolic) delineated by Bolman and Deal (1997) and three traits noted in the literature as evident during school principal succession (predecessor leave-taking, succession source, and experience). The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) bibliotherapy intervention on the level of burnout and irrational beliefs. This study specifically examined the impact of a REBT bibliotherapy intervention on middle school teachers' irrational beliefs and level of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment, using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educators Survey (Maslach, Jackson, & Schwab, 1986) and the Irrational Beliefs Test (Jones, 1968).

Friendship similarities on behavioral and psychopathological characteristics have been proposed as being risk factors for maladaptive development, yet these similarities have not been thoroughly examined. The purpose of the present study was to examine the similarities within children's friendships. It was expected that friends would be more similar than nonfriends on aggression, inattention/hyperactivity, depression, and anxiety. Friendship similarities should also differ across grades, with similarity decreasing as grade increases, and across gender, with boys' friendships more similar on depression and anxiety and girls' friendships more similar on aggression and inattention/hyperactivity.

It is my view, and here, no doubt, I am pre-empting my conclusion, that what literary and feminist historicism recognizes as the querelle des femmes, the debate as to the status and political role of women, is in fact underpinned and motivated by a much less explicit, yet nonetheless portentous, querelle des lois. The querelle des femmes, in other words, was always a polemic as to the legal status of women, as to their definition and role in theology and jurisprudence, canon and civil law. This article argues that the chaos of the US Supreme Court’s death penalty jurisprudence can be sorted with the use of a single point of clarification. That jurisprudence uses the term “culpability” – and similar terms, such as desert, responsibility, and blameworthiness – without regard to a critical ambiguity. We use “culpability” to refer to fault in wrongdoing, as reflected in “culpability elements” such as purpose or recklessness. We also use culpability to refer to eligibility for punishment, which is at issue in the defenses of insanity or minority. This article examines the unique components of dialogue between disputing parties that mediators extract and reframe to move the discussion forward. The same components provide the building blocks of the discussion agenda and the framework of the mediation agreement. Changes within agriculture towards an industrialized approach to farming have had detrimental effects on people, communities, and the environment. There is a need for methods of farming that preserve and protect the natural and social ecology. In this thesis, I explored the experiences and stories of a small group of PEI organic farmers, who have an important role in preserving the Island's natural and social ecology. Two studies were conducted to examine the factors that influence women’s choices of political participation. In the first study 600 University students were asked their likelihood of engaging in 35 traditional and non-traditional political activities to create social change (the Political Activity Scale). Factor analysis identified 5 factors, one of which represented traditional and political activities, one of which represented non-traditional political activities and three of which represented a mix of traditional and non-traditional. Among the lessons we can glean from the past is the importance of agreement on the nature of our field, and especially its core. Building on a model of the field from the 1940s and a model of the current language arts curriculum designed for Iowa's public schools, Becker presents a possible model of contemporary communication studies in which the core consists of relationships of the source, audience, code, and "reality" with the message. Despite women athletes' recent gains and the increasing popularity of women's team sports, disparities between men's and women's collegiate athletic programs persist. Twenty-seven years after the passage of Title IX federally funded college education programs still discriminate against their female athletes and there is Little, if anything, done to reprimand these schools. This essay argues that the disparity in treatment of men and women athletes may, in part, be attributed to the disparities in arguments far men's and women's athletics. The field of education has produced a vast amount of research on elements affecting communication in the classroom. Within any learning situation, disagreements about ideas or opinions are inevitable. This paper reports the development of a Teacher Tolerance for Disagreement measure (the TTFD instrument). The paper reviews the evolution of the Tolerance for Disagreement construct and previous efforts with reference to measurement. In this study, a 20-item version of a TTFD instrument was found to be unidimensional, reliable, and able to demonstrate good discriminant validity.
