Terri Smith Armfield presented a graduate oboe recital at 8:00 p.m. on November 15, 1999 in Russell Hall Auditorium at the University of Northern Iowa School of Music. The recital was presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Master of Music degree in oboe performance. The recital repertoire represented a variety of challenging pieces from Italian Baroque to twentieth century: Antonio Vivaldi's Sonata No. 6, Opus 13, Bohuslav Martinu's Concerto for Oboe, Gaetano Donizetti's Concertina for English Horn and Ludwig van Beethoven's Trio Opus 87.

The thrust of this study was to examine the influence of selected noncognitive variables on the academic success of urban Black high school males in an enrichment Pre-College Program. The major research question was: Which of the selected noncognitive variables are most useful in predicting academic success for urban Black high school males?

This study reinvestigated Sedlacek and Brooks' (1976) proposed set of seven noncognitive variables related to academic success: (a) self-concept; (b) realistic self-appraisal; (c) understanding of and ability to deal with racism; (d) preference for long-term goals over more immediate, short-term needs; (e) availability of a strong support …

Telomerase, a ribonucleoprotein, has been described as an essential component of highly proliferative cells, which stabilizes the telomeres and avoids cellular senescence. Telomerase has been identified in various embryonic cell stages, hematopoietic cells, and in >85% of tumor tissue biopsies analyzed. The ability to measure the potential to proliferate successfully could provide an objective measure of an embryo's quality. The objectives of this study were to modify the telomeric repeat amplification protocol (TRAP) assay system for increased sensitivity to allow detection of telomerase activity in the single cell of an oocyte and embryo, obtain telomerase activity levels for the oocyte …

Some New Observations On The Cytopathology Of Fin Erosion Disease In Winter Flounder Pseudopleuronectes Americanus, Joel E. Bodammer

A light and electron microscopic study was conducted on dorsal fin tissues adjacent to acute fin erosion lesions in winter flounder from 2 polluted sites (New York Bight region and New Haven Harbor) on the northeast Atlantic Coast. The objective of this work was to evaluate these minimally affected, lesion-associated tissues which may precede the acute or severe stages of the disease. The following 4 types of pathological conditions were found in the epidermis of diseased fish from the 2 polluted sites: (1) epithelial cell hyperplasia; (2) mucous cell hyperplasia and hypertrophy; (3) spongiosis; and (4) focal necrosis.
